WRC 8: General Discussion (Release: september 2019)

I was into it until you put DR2 in an arcade box with V-Rally DR2 is way ahead of DR1 on almost every level. WRC8 is good but is behind the Dirt games and SLRE because it still has some very odd things inside it's physics system that ultimately stop it from being up there with the best of them. It's very close but it's not on the level of those 3.

From my personal perspective DR 2 handles like it was made from the ground up to be primarily a controller game - this is kind of borne out with the fact that it was released with wheel support almost completely broken - this has been fixed to a degree, but it still doesn't offer the depth and information that the FFB of DR 1 provides.

Yeah, DR 2 is great fun, but it's a bit flick in, hold opposite lock, and straighten up and then rinse and repeat - there's not much fighting the car, plus what I can only describe as an invisible helping hand from god in terms of what you can get away with. Add to that, that if you're a cockpit driver on the PS4, then you only have a choice of driving from the back seat or the boot (trunk) which is a complete immersion killer.

I know it's a controversial opinion, but that's how I see it. Also when you consider that I bought it at release, once I've added the season 3 & 4 pass then it becomes close to a $150 game (we generally get overcharged in the Swiss PS store), which is poor value for money when you consider that the season passes basically contain recycled, albeit remastered, content from DR 1.

I don't hate the game, on the contrary it has a well deserved place in my collection, but I do think it's very overhyped.

With very few exceptions, every game is built to be a controller game really because that's what the majority play on, not having detailed feedback means nothing in terms of the physics simulation really, it can go too far the other way and become an unnecessary chire.. I also don't buy into the "harder is more realistic" mentality.

Ended up doing a full junior WRC season without even realising it. Very, very impressed.

After a shocker in France, I just managed to eek over the line to take the championship on the final stage. Wales is even more terrifying when there's a championship on the line!

Cool , i got 4th, 1st, 1st. Big mistake in finland so i will end up between 5 and 7th. The problem is that the challenger got 1st ,2, 2. So i am done.

Can’t wait to get a good play through on Monday. My library is really lacking a thorough career mode except maybe PC2, but I wound up creating my own series there anyway.

Seems that most games these days skip on this concept and steer you to online which I don’t care for much (plus I let my unused PS+ sub expire...) And I don’t care for F1, otherwise I would really be into that game from what I’ve seen.

V-Rally 4 had a promising career mode but I really felt it was difficult to get into to. Something about the menus, number of disciplines and progression made it all a confusing mess. I was hyped about VR4 but after all this time it was kind of a mediocre let down.

Well, just hoping for the best with WRC8. If it’s a better and more in depth version of WRC7 I should be a happy camper.

I think you are in for a hell of a ride ;)

You're going to be very happy in that case.

Now that I've spent some more time playing this, I have to say that the more I play it, the less impressed I am with the physics & handling. The RWD cars are extremely reluctant to give any on-throttle oversteer. It's actually worse than DiRT 4 in that regard. It's also worse than KT's own, much more arcade-style, V-Rally 4. The FWD cars are able to somehow produce an excessive amount of wheelspin, like driving for a hundred yards or more while producing continuous, steady-state wheelspin like a dragster doing a burnout, yet they don't always plunge into massive understeer when wheelspin occurs. It's apparent that the physics simulation is built entirely for the AWD cars, but it completely falls apart when dealing with anything 2WD. The R5 and WRC cars still seem pretty decent, although the low-speed vague hovercraft feeling is still present as it was in previous WRC titles. Also, the car setup is missing some options, like toe angle, that I often use to fine-tune the balance of a car.

WRC8 still has a lot going for it. The career mode is the best in any racing game outside of the F1 series. The stage design is excellent and very true-to-life. The weather effects are cool. And the attraction of driving the current-generation WRC cars makes it worth buying for them alone. But the physics are not up to the task of simulating anything other than modern AWD cars. DR2.0 is a better simulation, while WRC8 is a better game, and both deserve their place in my gaming library.

Driving the WRC 2 Pro machines now and I’m absolutely loving it. These feel like the sweet spot between the weak juniors and mental mainline cars. Can really hoon them with a bit of safety.

Ive been tinkering with the FOV settings and i have to say that usually i always opt for cockpit cam but im loving the dynamic chase cam on this game, it just feels right when playing and if i want to hit a good sector time i usually go for the bonnet cam but im hoping that ill be able to match or surpass my PBs using the dynamic chase cam.

Getting some late calls from co driver, even with setting on "far ahead". Mostly when approaching hairpins or square turns...

Basic testrun in Finland with the 037, yes I am driving like miss Daisy and if you guys wonder why I don't use the handbrake, it is because it has a great turnin and the handbrake is very sensitive on this car. Not at all used to the car yet and surely a handful coming from WRC2
