WRC 8: General Discussion (Release: september 2019)

Just stop it you two. You're making me feel bad. I'm having enough problems with medium difficulty. :)

Well I got fired my first try. I’m driving cleanly and the replays look fast but I will have to dial the difficulty back a notch. ‘Authentic’ is uber difficult. I’m nowhere close to the leader.

How long did it take you to get there?

And, I remember KT saying that when you switch teams there is a partial skill tree reset. As if you inherit the new team's tree. Is that true?

Yes the tree will reset partially. Found out today.

First impressions are great! I did a quick run around the test area just driving too fast and flying of the road.

I spent most my 30 min session messing about with wheel and camera settings. Then I did a few loops around a tarmac section of the test area until my car fell apart. Got my first taste of the beautiful dynamic weather when my session went from clear to a light rain to match the current weather I had to drive back to work in :)

The wheel feels great, I love the stiffer feeling as oppose to the "flick, limp, grab" feeling I get from PCars2 and AC, and there is the absence of the constant rattling I get in those games which is a bonus. In fact, WRC8 was so stiff I turned everything down to 25 and it is still very stiff. I also set wheel rotation to 240 because I like minimal movement on it, rotating the wheel past 90 deg in either direction isn't ideal for me and the small shifter buttons on the DFGT make it very difficult to shift while turning.

The E-Brake is also great, pretty easy to use. I use 'O' button on PS4 wheel but once I get used to it it should be fine. I just thought, maybe I can map it to the DFGT sequential shifter! That would be great.

Dash cam is the best! I wish every racing game had one. To me this is the true cockpit cam. When driving IRL, my wheel, dash, rearview, side mirrors etc are all just blurry unfocused things in my peripherals. Really the only thing I can see when driving is what is directly outside my windshield.

I can't wait to dive in later tonight and really put some work in. I'm going to need a lot of hours to get used to the driving and to git gud.

You've come right in at the high point of the series. I'm starting to think this is probably the best driving game of this generation. I'm absolutely gutted I have to go back to work for the next 4 days.

The dynamic chase cam is really doing it for me especially when I'm able to see first hand my back end stepping out and the suspension under load whilst navigating around the turkish nightmare with extreme caution, my car of choice was the lancia delta in the rain.

Oh boy. I adore this game. I've been in the mood for a new rally game lately, I've played quite a lot of Dirt Rally, and 2.0 hasn't really piqued my interest since it seems more focused on having a lot of cars rather than a lot of tracks. I knew the previous WRC games have had a not great reputation but I read really good things about this one and oh man. It's really exceeding my expectations. I really like that it focuses on just the WRC series, the simulation and management aspects are really detailed. I like how the calendar system gives you things to do between rallies. I much prefer this and having a ton of rally locations to just having a **** load of cars and only a handful of locations in Dirt Rally.

Holy hell though, it really is a wakeup call compared to that game. I used to be awful at tarmac stages in Dirt Rally. I feel like such a badass on them in WRC 8, but the loose surface locations are so difficult. The simulation feels more demanding, but some of the stage designs are unforgiving. It's amazing. I'm really glad I took a gamble on this game.

Got myself fired by Citroën midseason and went with Hyundai. Checked the skilltree and indeed there have been a few small changes. It depends on the focus of the team when you sign the contract.

I hope that after my WRC2 season with the Hyundai I can score a WRC contract...we'll see. I can only advice to switch teams of you've done one season with them. Just for the sake of changing the rallies you participate in 👍

I think I've worked out how the contract offers work.

If you check under statistics and Manufacturer Relationship you get to see your current score, you need to get this high enough to go green (around 90 I Think) to get an end of season offer.

To increase the score you need to repeatedly do the try outs for them. However one specific type of tryout will give you an immediate offer and if accepted you jump to the start of a new season (I had this with Ford and. WRC2 Pro offer).

That could indeed be working like that. However my 2 WRC2 seasons for Citroën where above 90% if I remember but I only got another WRC2 offer from the same team. I wonder what is needed to advance to WRC itself. As said, I signed with Hyundai and I will keep a close eye on the objectives and offerings (manu) during the season.

Still bugs me that it is levelcapped and that brandloyalty is pretty limited since you'd be doing the same 6 rallies over and over again. To really advance one must switch teams I think.

Did a single stage on Turkey and Mexico. Those look absolutely fabulous  and truly a big big challenge

I am really interested in this game, since I loved WRC7, but I am having a hard time justifying another rally game while still playing Dirt Rally 2.0. One day I shall get WRC8.

Just wait for discounts. New eSports WRC season isn't starting until next year anyway (if you are into that).

Maybe Authentic difficulty is a bit of a stretch....

I played around in the training area last night mostly. Gold was seconds out of my reach, I got a few silvers but mostly Bronze. I thought that wasn't too bad, since I want career mode to be hard enough that I am mostly in the mid pack, and if I really nail a stage I'd get in a podium spot.

So before I started my career I did a Quick Play on one of the Sweden stages just to see how I'd fair......my God did I suck. It was difficult enough to keep the car on the road let alone do it with any sort of pace. I think I did about 5 or 6 attempts, across the finish that is, numerous other restarts. In those attempts I actually finished, at best I was 46 seconds out of first on what should have been about a 3 minute stage....I was as bad as 1:30 out of first on most of the other attempts.

Now, I like a challenge, so I'm not complaining. I just need to sort out if I want to start with an easier career or just to 30 runs of a stage in quickplay before I try it in career mode

Happy Rallying everyone!

The problem atm is that you can't adapt difficulty in the career on the fly. I think I would start with medium since that still can be a challenge. Especially the trickier stages will keep you on your toes.

Last night I just about finished my first championship, JWRC I managed to finish 3rd overall, (Hard Difficulty & Realistic/Authentic damage), which I was quite chuffed about. My Rallies were:

Sweden - 5th
Corsica - 7th
Sadegna - 3rd
Finland - 2nd
Wales - 1st

I was offered a WRC2 drive with Skoda which I jumped at. I had 2 try outs with them & 1 with Citroen, I preferred the Fabia so was happy to get it.
Practiced a few stages that I had just done in Wales, my god compared to the JWRC Fiesta it feels like a rocket, sounds nice too. I think they have really improved the WRC2 class compared to the last game, they feel like a joy to drive now, (didnt like them too much in 7). I reckon that all types of car now are fun, not just the WRC top class.

My upcoming WRC2 rallies with the Skoda are:

Monte Carlo
Argentina
Sardegna
Finland
Turkey
Germany

Im looking forward the new Argentina stages & Rally Turkey. I would have liked the option to maybe drop the difficulty down to Medium but it would seem that unless I create a new save go I`m stuck with Hard, never mind that will teach me!

Its also nice that when practicing individual stages, for the moment I can get into the online top ten, I sure that wont last at all!

Jimmy Broadbent doing a live stream on WRC 8 in 45 minutes. I can't link it because Youtube is blocked at work but check it out if you want. I'm looking forward to hearing what he has to say as a sim racing aficionado.

Can anyone comment on the frame rate for PS4 reg? I’m considering buying the game, but I found WRC 7 to be too choppy for me (low frame rates for racing games bothers my vision).
Dirt Rally 2 doesn’t bother my vision and I believe it’s 60fps if I’m not mistaken.

He loves it.

The game is a solid 30fps on a regular PS4 and the sense of speed is really good.

Well I think I’m going to have to get it then. Seems like the consensus on here is that it’s a good game.
I was tempted to get Season 3-4 for Dirt Rally 2, but seeing as that’s $40 CAD and I can get the entire WRC 8 game for $67 CAD, I think makes more sense from a value perspective.

Game is great. Are the physics as good/deep as Dirt 2.0?.... No, maybe. I agree its lacking some feeling in the shocks and I dont feel the tires cutting through the dirt but that said its predictable, challenging and rewarding. Dirt always left me feeling a little unsure, not as confident with what the car was doing where Wrc feels, again more predictable.

FFB is good/great for me once I lowered the tire load slider.

Add that, to the variety in stages, single player career, dynamic weather, etc and Wrc is the better game for me. I haven't enjoyed a rally game this much since the old Collin Mcre. The game feels alive in a way dirt doesn't. And it's a creeper. The more I play the better it gets.

Dirt does what it does. It's an excellent game and there is a real debate to be had. Fortunately we dont have to choose, we can just play both.

I've been gaming since the beginning. There has never been a better time for driving games.

A minor annoyance; does anyone know if there's a way to get the interior steering wheel in cockpit view to match the actual input on the wheel? I have a G29 on PS4. It's extremely distracting that it seems to be "filtering" the input visually on the wheel although it doesn't seem to affect the actual steering. For now I just have the wheel turned off but I do usually prefer to see it.

Disappointment: Tire wear is based strictly on distance driven, not actual tire load or how aggressively you drive. Tested it by driving a stage at competition speed, then at old lady speed. Tires ended at the same condition. :grumpy:

At least now I know, there's no point in trying to take care of the tires during events. The tires are going to do what they're going to do regardless.

I'm not trying to start a fanboy flame war, because I really enjoy both WRC8 and DR2.0, but it's worth noting that DR2.0 does model tire wear dynamically based on how much you actually abuse them. It can be tested by making a custom event with service areas after each stage, and just driving without changing tires to see how long it takes to go from "used" to "worn".

They really have nailed that feeling of actually being in a place. That Porsche scared me a lot on this track

Rally Spain Epic Stage

Spain is one of the rallies that I don't like a lot with exception of the gravel part. I think the stages (tarmac) all have the same flow and cornersections. This isn't WRC's fault because in DR4 it is the same. Reallife footage also shows a more glowing stage. However, once WRC8 adds a bit of humidity to the stages it becomes a notch more difficult. Places where you can go fast can suprise you with aquaplaning and it makes it a lot less predictable.

Concerning the Turkey stages :ill: Boy do they actually rally there??? It is brutal, no but seriously, very brutal:scared:

Loving the game after a reinstall fixed my shutdown issues. Only thing i find annoying is this:

Your car is in need of maintenance. Best thing to do is thrash it around a stage to make it pristine.

Sorry, what?
