WRC 8: General Discussion (Release: september 2019)

They really have nailed that feeling of actually being in a place. That Porsche scared me a lot on this track
Agreed, and the replay cams are much better this time around as well.

Spain is one of the rallies that I don't like a lot with exception of the gravel part. I think the stages (tarmac) all have the same flow and cornersections. This isn't WRC's fault because in DR4 it is the same. Reallife footage also shows a more glowing stage. However, once WRC8 adds a bit of humidity to the stages it becomes a notch more difficult. Places where you can go fast can suprise you with aquaplaning and it makes it a lot less predictable.
I quite like the mix of surfaces in Spain, nice challenge of gravel tyres on the tarmac.

Concerning the Turkey stages :ill: Boy do they actually rally there??? It is brutal, no but seriously, very brutal:scared:
Yep, it starts today as well, and it just as brutal in reality, last year the damage to the cars was indeed brutal.

Loving the game after a reinstall fixed my shutdown issues. Only thing i find annoying is this:

Your car is in need of maintenance. Best thing to do is thrash it around a stage to make it pristine.

Sorry, what?
As I recall is described as testing new parts that are more durable than the ones that wore out on the last rally.

After absolutely promising I'd stop buying more games, you guys have made me go out to get this at lunch. I don't think I've had a rally game since V-Rally 3!

Loved v rally 3! Quite overlooked at the time I thought but was such a good game for its time!

Disappointment: Tire wear is based strictly on distance driven, not actual tire load or how aggressively you drive. Tested it by driving a stage at competition speed, then at old lady speed. Tires ended at the same condition. :grumpy:

At least now I know, there's no point in trying to take care of the tires during events. The tires are going to do what they're going to do regardless.

I'm not trying to start a fanboy flame war, because I really enjoy both WRC8 and DR2.0, but it's worth noting that DR2.0 does model tire wear dynamically based on how much you actually abuse them. It can be tested by making a custom event with service areas after each stage, and just driving without changing tires to see how long it takes to go from "used" to "worn".

I did some testing and it's not entirely scripted. I can consistently get 3-5% more tire wear by driving fast, and 7-8% more by pushing hard than I get when granny driving. So driving style does affect tire wear. Setups do, too.

Let's just say that the tire wear from granny driving is WAY too high. Disappointing nonetheless.

Well typically with me at the wheel the tyres last longer than the car - so it's not really a problem for me just yet.

Restarted the career from WRC2 with the Polo.

I had completed junior WRC (gare that i car) and the only option the gave me was to move to WRC2 Pro with the Citroen. I prefer a more gradual approach from Wrc2 private.

Quick update, it turns out having my wheel rotation set to 240 was really negatively impacting my runs through stages. I turned it back to the default 540(I think) for giggles and I managed a good clean stage run right away and the car in general handles much better! I guess the low rotation made me constantly over correct and oversteer the car causing spins and loss of control.

Also it appears my wheel is unaffected by any other force feedback settings. I turned everything down to 0 to try and get the wheel looser but it is still the same. No fault of WRC 8 since I'm using a PS3 wheel, I go into every game expecting issues with it and turns out this is the issue with WRC 8. It's still feels good and is driveable, my only concern is maybe burning out the motor since the wheel is over 10 years old, though I only used it briefly when I bought and it then sat in storage until about a year ago.

I started a career with permacrash, bad idea. I'd much rather have a few limited resets, at least until I've played the game and am used to every stage. It's not like real rally drivers just get thrown into a stage blind like I am. They do recce runs and such, so I will imagine my resets as mere recce runs.

After playing WRC 7 for the past two weeks in preparation for 8, 8 is a massive improvement over 7 in every area. They finally have full track side replays that are a joy to watch.

This game deserves all of the praise that it's getting and then some. I am not sure how realistic the physics model is or if the tire wear is realistic or not, but what I do know is that it feels great with my wheel and leaves a smile on my face after every stage.

Edit: The stages are epic, some of them are just so scary to drive when you peek over to your left and see a cliff that leads to who knows where.

Being a permacrash fan, I like your thoughts on treating restarts as recce runs. Never thought of it that way, though I’ll probably stick with perma mode.

I meant to add to my praise for this game the view options are more than welcome. Not quite PC2 level, but better than most current games on console. I originally went with cockpit, but the dash view is awesome in every way for my application. 👍

Absolutely - dash view all the way. I use it on all driving games where either it's a selectable view, or the cockpit cam is adjustable. It's one of the reasons I've put very little time into DR 2 as there are only 2 cockpit views and both are like driving from the backseat or the boot.

dash view all the way

Really need to try it out but I am too used to the bonnet one :scared:

Here a random historic event from the career. So difficult to really put the hammer down since the back-end wants to step out as soon as you get on the power. Also I pull to often in the red but that is because of the engine. It just asks to scream

Those extra cars, maybe I simply buy them because it really mixes up those historics and I think it is even worthwhile the purchase since the career is so good and the mix of historic events have been great so far!

I used to play WRC7 onboard but one of @Pfei 's videos converted me to bonnet cam, I think you get a more all round view of the stage, I'm definately quicker using it.

I might actually do proper recce runs in my next career. First attempt I'll just do a low speed limit run through the stage and then give it a proper attempt after that.

For now I want to see how quickly I get sacked in my permacrash career. I imagine I'm going to be near last in every event, so I'll "test" to see when the game decides "K, buddy, give it up"

I love permacrash. It's not that I'm masochistic necessarily, but when I played Dirt Rally I had a very bad habit of driving recklessly because the only consequence was having to restart the stage. I regularly ended up in this feedback loop of losing focus, ****ing up, getting frustrated, restarting, driving even worse due to frustration, more crashing, and eventually just turning the game off.

I'm still very mediocre at WRC 8, but the consequences of permacrash help me focus and not push too hard. And while it can be frustrating when I **** up (which I do a lot), knowing that I just have to keep moving on learn from it really helps mitigate the frustration when constant restarts just made it worse.

So I'm late buying this game as I'm in the middle of selling my boat,Went to eb games today to get it but was met with " WRC 8 isn't out yet mate,7 is the latest".Ok went to JB hifi,No game listed. Is this game invitational only? Internet search has one listing from a online seller.WTF. *PS4 in Australia.

I remember seeing some complaints about the Australian release. And I have a Korean friend on PC who says it's not available there in the Epic Games Store, either. This kind of stuff always happens with FIA games.

Deleted my first career save on ‘Authentic’ difficulty and opted for ‘Medium’ instead. Much better.

My finishes in JWRC at Sweden were top three and finished second in the Rally. Medium will give me enough challenge once I start the Rallies I’m not familiar with later on so I should be good to go, I think ‘Hard’ will be too a bit too hard.

Also, the test sessions on Medium were much better and I found myself getting the Gold easily so far. The Authentic times to beat were unbelievably fast.

Can’t stop from reiterating this game is great. Could be my favorite of 2019.

So I got sacked after the first season in my hard/permacrash career lol. I finished last in all but one rally. Corsica I went full speed into a rock the very first stage forcing me to abandon the day and compete the next as an Extreme Conditions event lol. I got my first few green sectors in Sardegna and actually finished 12th in this one. But I couldn't keep the momentum in Finland, and despite running Finland pretty clean a big crash on the second day cost me everything. Then Wales I picked up a puncture and lost 30 seconds replacing the tire so I just gave up after that.

I started a medium career no permacrash and thought it's a bit easy. I got podium in Sweden and I finished every stage in the top 5 despite my runs having a handful of minor mistakes. So I think Hard/No Permacrash is the way to go. I'd probably be around mid pack with a few minor mistakes and getting a win or even a podium will feel like a really big achievement, which is what I'm after.

@HERE4BEER3
@MrCrynox

I’m thinking Hard difficulty might be the way to go too, but I have this inkling even on Medium I’ll breeze through JWRC and hit a massive difficulty spike once I reach WRC and start running the likes of Turkey and Chile.

Would be a good challenge nonetheless. Maybe I will start a Hard campaign too.

You’re probably right about Chile & Turkey but that can be said for all of us being that none of us have experienced them, so if we don`t finish too high in these so what! Its a 14 round world championship :)

When running Hard difficulty bear in mind that you probably won’t ever be able to finish an extreme event as four attempts are not enough to be able to complete, the training stage times are also harder to gold. If this is important to you stick with medium, (it doesn’t bother me as they are not the main event). Manufacturer try outs seem to be Ok though, so far I’ve managed to complete the 3 that have been offered within the time limit.

Playing on hard with no practice & just the 4 restarts will probably net you 5-10th stage times, but with a reasonable level of practice runs beforehand will get you into the top 3.

The reason I went for hard from the off is that last year I did a complete career replay of WRC7 on hard in all 3 categories and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It took much longer to complete as I had to put a lot of effort in to learn every stage inside out & practice them, (outside of the championship), a lot, but I found that the satisfaction of winning was so high as it felt like I had to really push myself to beat the AI & get the Championship crowns.

Also I’ve got a crazy thought that I might have a go at Authentic in the future so playing on hard will definitely be good practice for this!

Good luck!

I think you're right about this. On medium, the extreme events took me until my final attempt and I just barely crossed the line with less than a second to go.

I've been using the dash cam and messing with the FOV settings. took my FOV to -17 dropped the height to -0.0.10 and all I can say is that KT have absolutely nailed the sensation of edge of the seat rallying.

I'm blown away by the level of immersion this game has and sorry codemasters as good as DR looks WRC8 blows you out of the water.
