Now that is a cool Volvo :sly: đź‘Ť
Seen it in RL. Fugly car :)

YUK....

But then I drive Mini's* so what would I know?

(*The proper Mini, not that BMW thing.)

Sphinx
đź‘Ť what model?

It's only an old '80's City E, well it was originally, it's halfway through a rebuild at the moment and it don't look pretty. :yuck:

I'm hoping to use it as a track day car, my old one used to really p??? off elise owners as it went past. :)

Ooooooh. Do tell. What are the plans?

I've got Clubman that got a 1275 motor in it, and the disk brakes from the 1275 too. It's a long term build. :P

There's a 1275 GT engine waiting to be pulled apart and fettled. I'd like to leave it 1275 but might go for a 1380 if it needs a re bore, it needs to be fairly reliable as it'll be a daily driver so no full race cam either but I'm aiming for around 120 BHP, (you americans can stop laughing now, at least it'll go round corners ).

It's only running a 1000cc engine at the moment with one of my own heads which I reckon is equivalent to a stage 1 (=20-30BHP increase). I've already fitted an LCB manifold and one of my own exhaust systems along with a Nikki twin choke carb. By the way if anyone knows where I can get any info/parts for the Nikki carb please let me know, all I've managed to find on the net is an exploded view diagram?

Five speed gearbox is almost an essential now for a mini. There is a six speed sequential box available now but at nearly four grand (sterling) that will have to wait for a christmas when I've been veeerry good. :) All gears will be swapped out for straight-cut close ratio items, very noisy I know but I like the sound and I'm sure my wife'll learn to live with it. :ouch: Quaife LSD, they handle sooooo much better with these and IMO they handle great without 'em.

As I've said it's also going to be a track day toy so fully adjustable suspension all round, ride height, camber and dampers. Not sure if I'll go with coil-over shocks and springs or stick with the more conventional (for a mini) set-up. I've recently found a beam axle set-up that replaces the rear subframe but uses the original trailing arms with coil overs, not sure of the legality of these for road use yet so further investigation required.

Brakes will need upgrading, prolly with some nice shiny alloy six-pots on vented discs, I'm running 12 inch wheels at the moment but even this set-up (which is considered one of the best standard set-ups,) is crap.

I've already fitted a one piece carbon front end, the removable bonnet two piece version was out of stock when I went to buy it so I've ended up with the one piece. Still, with the recent craze for Lambo style doors the kids think it looks great as the whole front end now hinges forward from the front of the front subframe. I plan to replace as many of the panels withe carbon fiber as possible, doors, boot lid etc, get the power to weight ratio in my favor when up against small sports cars out on track. :sly:

I'll post some pics up later but like I said before it don't look pretty at the moment.

Well, the plan is/was just a general tidy up.

I've had all the rust removed this far, but spent about $20 on paint, so while it is blue, it's several different shades at the moment.

I want to bolt on 13inch wheels, and those sportpack arches as well. I'm thinking of moving the fuel filler into the boot and smothing the bootlid too. Louvres on the rear window. Spot lights on the front. That's about all for the exterior.

Interior wise, it's already got custom seats (from a Mitsi Lancer) so just a retrim, new carpet, new hood lining, new glass (current stuff is a bit scratched) new door cards, wooden steering wheel and a custom dash. The plan is just for a solid wood panel (something nicely grained though) and a few aftermarket gauges. A CD player up front with two speakers in the front, two in the rear and maybe a 10inch sub in the boot...

Engine wise, the 1275 suits me fine at the moment. I could use a 5speed box but they're hard to find around here. Just a tidyup under the bonnet and that'll be all I think. Oh, a twin-carb set and extractors are on the cards - it's already got a lumpy(ish) cam and the torque blows me away! It'll pull up hills in 4th gear no problems.

Just keeping it on the road has lead to a few unexpected overhauls - new fuel system as the old one was leaking badly (so new, electric fuel pump and lines), new cooling system which included binning that stupid radiator/heater thing from inside, and recently all new suspension...

I took it in to get one new rear shock and a front bush replaced. Well, can't just do one shock, so that became two rear shocks. Then, turns out the fronts are ****ed as well, so new ones there too. As for one bush, all bushes were shot so new bushes all around too, including a new rear radius arm that fell apart... A bit of a shock when the bill came through, but the mint ride now makes up for it. I was considering making the repairs myself (changing the one shock) but didn't have the time so thought taking it into the shop would be alright. In the end I suppose it's better to get all that stuff done if it's needed, but it sure was a shock...

I really like my Mini, and it's great fun to belt around town in. The current fuel prices make me smile too. My only gripe is that with the 4speed it's ringing it's nuts off at over 100km/h, so it's not much good on the open road. I'm sure a 5speed would go some way toward fixing that, but I don't have that sort of money to spend on a single item - I'd rather invest that in what would likely stretch to doing most if not all of my interior.

:)

I want to see pictures, of BOTH of your Mini's, NOW! In any state. Stat!

I'll get some up tonight I'm off to work in ten minutes so no time now. đź‘Ť

Sounds like you guys have your work cut out. I'm sure you'll enjoy it, even though there will be times when you begin to wonder why you ever started the damn project. My only advice is for you to join your local Mini club, attend Mini rallies and talk to all the Mini experts out there. đź‘Ť

I have a British Open Classic. It still requires a huge amount of work doing to it, mostly new panels, replacement scuttle for one, and the engine has seen better days :( but I'll get there in the end :)

I currently have my eye on a black Mini Mayfair. The guy who owns has it garaged up after buying a BINI, and he told me the other day he is now ready to sell it on. The last time I saw her she was looking grand, no rust and the paintwork was looking good and the engine was as sweet as a pea. Fingers crossed đź‘Ť

Good luck with your projects đź‘Ť

Sorry, I don't think I've even got any pictures of mine. If I do it'll be on the old 10inch wheels from while back. :indiff: I'll have a scout around, but no promises. I'd take some more, but I seem to have misplaced my camera too... :irked:

@Sphinx: Good luck with the Mini mate. đź‘Ť It's surprising how many owners are stepping up to the BINI (I like that name :P ) - when I was talking to a guy around the road (a while back now, when they were new to the market) he was telling me how they were a sell out etc. Now I see he's got one FFS!

TBH I don't mind them, and actually love the style. However, what got me was BMW's clear intent to disassociate themselves from the Mini. It was only when customers started to mod their BINI's in the style of the Mini that BMW grabbed the idea for themselves, but only once they realised that all they had was just another hatchback.

There are millions of hatchback's in the world, but there will only ever be one Mini :D

Would I buy one?
I wouldn't have one but I wouldn't mind if the wife had one ;)

I have nothing against the new mini either. They're actually quite a good car. My sister has a Cooper version of the new one and it drives really nice and handles well for a new car. She's stuck 18 inch wheels on it now though which has altered the handling slightly but she says it looks nicer. Women eh?

My only problem is what BMW did to Rover when they realised that they were onto a good thing with the BINI.

I bet it won't be around as long as the original though?

Here's one pic of the front end minus the engine for now, I know it's a bad photo it was taken with my phone. I've got some others but they're too big to attach here and I'm having a bit of trouble learning how to use image shack.

I'll get some more up if I work out how.

Is that a solid gold subframe or has it been painted ;)

Looking good mate, keep it up đź‘Ť

Just jetwashed and painted for now. If I get some new ones (the backs gonna need one soon,) I'll get 'em powder coated in this colour, the colour in the pics is quite close to the colour in the flesh.

This should be a pic of how it looked when I got hold of it. Like I said, not purdie. It turned out to be a bit of a basket case, probably some of the worst rust I've seen in a car of this age. It could do with a new shell but that'll have to wait till more cash is available.

All the tin worm has been chopped out and replaced with fresh metal, all of the braking system has been replaced including the pipework the only bits I salvaged were the master cylinder and front calipers which have all been rebuilt for now.

I bought it last april and the first time I heard it run was two weeks ago, I think the engine was the only bit so far that was any good, it started first time after I'd given it a service (oil, filters, plugs and points). đź‘Ť

As much as seeing Sandlers acting retarded being...err...đź’ˇ entertaining, I really prefered Happy Gilmore. All the gusto of golf without the boring stuff! :D

I think it's some sort of playoff thing.

NFL perhaps? :indiff:

It's Hockey... The Sabres are the team from Buffalo, NY, and have pushed their playoff series into the 7th (and final) game. If they win this game, they go to the Stanley Cup series, where they'll have their asses handed to them by the Edmonton Oilers. :sly: (KIDDING!!!) Whoever wins the Stanley Cup series is the champion for this season.

I stopped following hockey when the Flames moved from Atlanta to Calgary after the '79-'80 season... Atlanta has a new hockey team now, the Thrashers, but I just haven't gotten back into it... Too many intervening years with no hockey team to cheer for, and the Braves (baseball team from Atlanta) have become a major force to be reckoned with in the meantime, so I spend my money on baseball tickets now instead of hockey tickets...

Besides, I never quite got over the betrayal of my favorite hockey team being moved without my permission! ;)

I actually have an Atlanta Trashers jumper I picked up for like $5 somewhere! So yeah, they're my team! Not that I've ever watched a game of Hockey, are they any good? (The Trashers, not the Hockey)

maybe you should get interested again...
if atlanta can get some consistancy they'll be a force next year.
I was rooting for them to make it in the playoffs this year. The way they were playing after the olympic break they would have been certain to create some nice upset drama.
