This is BS for me really, I pay for 70 down/5 up, but now they apparently have reduced my speed for some reason..

This is what it was a couple of days ago:

I was playing GT6 with a pitiful 1.5Mb DSL. I highly doubt you'll have any issues.
This makes me happy. :)
The DSL I'm getting is supposed to be 15Mb, so that makes me even happier knowing that a lousy 1.5 works.
I have satellite right now, which you can't play online with because of the lag.

Hey guys, i've been experimenting with my router channels as there have been issues here over the past year with the new Smart meters that were installed. Since having ours installed I have a 100% deadspot in my bedroom where nothing can connect to the internet. I have also noticed that if our front door is open, the speed drops and my connection weakens. Our microwave also interferes with the connection as well, almost cutting it out completely when it's heating something up.

So today I decided to test the 3 'suggested' channels for my router, these being 1, 6 and 11. Our router was on channel 6 previously so I ran some tests with the door open and closed:

These are all wifi speeds, i'm about 10-15m away from my router and the connection speeds over wifi within 5m radius of the router are in the mid 90's down and high 2's up. These are also all done connecting to the same Telstra server through speedtest.net

Door open:

Speedtest:
Channel: 1 - Ping: 8 / Speed: 9.11/2.25
Channel: 6 - Ping: 8 / Speed: 20.52/2.42
Channel: 11 - Ping: 17 / Speed: 29.57/2.38

Door closed:

Speedtest:
Channel: 1 - Ping: 10 / Speed: 2.05/1.86
Channel: 6 - Ping: 10 / Speed: 25.02/2.48
Channel: 11 - Ping: 8 / Speed: 33.49/2.30

Channel 1 is clearly the weakest, I have no idea why it dropped lower than with the door open. Channel 11 is looking like it's the best, but I am still really confused as to why these speeds change due to the front door being open.

Also, just another question, my router settings page has an option of changing the bandwidth from 20MHz to 40MHz, what's the difference between the two?

Channel is just the frequency the WiFi system works on.

There are 13 channels on the 2.4Ghz frequency if I remember correctly.
All you do when changing the frequency is go up or down 5Mhz
These are the channel frequencies in Mhz

1:2,412
2:2,417
3:2,422
4:2,427
5:2,433
6:2,437
7:2,442
8:2,447
9:2,452
10:2,457
11:2,462
12:2,467
13:2,472

Most routers have an AUTO setting which detects nearby WiFi signals, looks and sees what channel they are on and set the channel for you automatically for the best speed and least interference

How old is your router?
Can't explain why you are getting such a signal loss with a microwave.
Even though microwave ovens work on the S band(2Ghz~4Ghz) range they shouldn't interfere with WiFi.

I've got a netgear cd3100d-2. Only a couple of years old, it's connected through copper cabling. I'll move the router onto the auto setting if you think it'd be the best option. You wouldn't have any idea as to why the front door being open interferes with the signal as well?

Radio waves could be bouncing off it, thus making it stronger.

If you have any beer/coke cans, cut them in half and stick them to the back of the antenna, this should help a little.
