Try to beat that ;) We did come a long way, didn't we?

lol, I was going to say Car and Driver, but that was 1992...

I would say one thing that this thread has done is give most people some form of perspective in the form of "everone else's" opinions. I think most people are content now to wait for more info (can't have proof without info) - though that might have something to do with GamesCom only being a week away...

I'm really disappointed that it has taken them 5 years to make this game and all we have is 200+ premium cars and 800 standard plus a 70 million dollar bill where did all that money go to?, although when this game comes out i probably won't be complaining then, but i fear it is something that the reviewers will pick on GT5 for is those standard cars and how they look bogus.

i dont think they're gonna look that much worse tbh. its all probably being blown out of proportion

I wonder how the are going to make the lights work on a Standard older vette, when you are on a track that has day to night transitions. If the headlights are drawn on then that makes them impossible to come up without some video trickery replacing that model with another when the light starts to change.

Your thoughts

What fancy camera angles, are you talking about looking left or right, or have I missed something?

Maybe he was talking about the new replay cameras that are in the cars that change.

I'm not sure I've fully understood what you mean. I guess once the lights on the car are turned on, the textures (and mesh / mesh-"condition") are toggled, as they would be on the premiums (although, probably animated) then it's just a case of "projecting" a bit of light from the front of the car.

With the standards being so light on polygons, even if the "lights-on" mesh is a duplicate of the entire model, there's no harm having both in memory. Of course, that's not a very PD-like solution in the first place, so I imagine that both lights on and lights off are present in the same mesh, with a toggle at load time that puts the lights up or down.
If this "toggle" can't be done in real-time, it's only a case of finding which vertices need to be displaced and doing it via the geometry engine at render-time (every frame the lights are up)

Hope they'll show some standard stuffs (also playable) at gc. If again nothing about standard cars will be showed.. well i'll start thinking that standards = crap.

I honestly don't get the big deal, they still remodeled all the cars for updated graphics. All the cars apparently still have cockpit view, just not as accurate or unique per se (wait, this is still debatable...). Besides that, the other 800 cars only have a little less accuracy than others(brakes, and other minute details).

that premium 200 seems to be excessive detail not found anywhere else, to me its one of the things that makes GT5 stand out above the others. I doubt any racing game made in a year has that much focus on any one of its cars.

Hell, i feel for the modelers O_O. i'm modeling a car myself, i honestly don't know how they do it and keep sane. meticulous, time consuming, polygon modeling detail after detail is an insane challenge. The 800 standard cars are one thing but the premium cars must be a beast.

car i'm modeling

Give PD a break people, its not like there's a 'make car' button...

it looks like they spent all these years with the physics engine, and developing game features, theres still so little we know to say that they spent all this time doing nothing.

That program is killer. How do you go about getting it. Can you model concepts?

Yes you fully understand what I mean. You just did a way better of describing what I was trying to say!

I'm not too worried about it. Like someone else said I don't think I'll notice it while I am actually playing the game. I HATE the dlc stuff though. Why should I have to fork over more money after I just paid 100 for the game. I hate this new DLC trend, it blows.:grumpy:

lol, i beleive you might have a bit of trouble but don't give up!

also are you getting 2.49 or 2.53?

i'd suggest the latest edition (2.53) because they made alot of huge changes...

(quick note of 2.53 it is still in beta so there will be glitches and crashes, but i'd recommend it anyway)

In a way, there is. Renown German die-cast car maker Herpa is known to work off the original plans they get from the manufacturers.

I would be very surprised if PD hasn't got a similar agreement.

Still, in the meantime, I'm feeling rather pleased with 200 cars. Just wish they had another sale's pitch, but I think I'm repeating myself.

I've always wondered how much CAD data PD might have access to. I'd imagine it would make at least some things easier. Judging by how quickly they can get certain cars in-game (FT-86, Italia, GT-R, STI hatch), we already know they have access to some models before the public sees them.

I'm still pretty concerned over what the remaining unknown ~100 cars will be, because I have a sneaking suspicion we're going to miss out on a lot of the "normal" 2005-2010 cars PD usually takes pride in including. Also, since GT PSP's number was around 830, but at least 40 of those are already Premiums in GT5, I'm wondering if there's some unknown Standards as well.

PD have had access to internal Nissan info since at least GT3. That was how Kaz had the 350z set to be in the game before it even debuted at Detroit. I recall reading an old OPM that talked about how Kaz basically went to the show to make sure they had modeled the car correctly.

There were probably around that many cars excised from the GT4 roster. The Holdens, the Astons, etc.

They use a laser scanner these days
Off course having all the surface data is one thing, then you have to separate all the various components and materials and turn them into 3D objects, texture them, and set up all the physics for the damage and what not. A lot of work!

"They have a crew of 40 people that are going to spend the next six months building our car for the game. That's the amount of detail", said Craig.

Also they gave him a free GT-R.
