However, it's still not certain how exactly many playable Premium cars will be in the game. If the famous 6 months/car figure is correct, then with 30 3D car modelers in 6 years PD should have managed to make way more than 200 completely different cars (because duplicates, of which japanese cars in GT4 had plenty, should not take much to add once the "base" model is done). Please note that if we exclude duplicates and similar versions, GT4 roughly had somewhere about 350+ unique cars.

The exact number of premium cars might be a final surprise like the number of unique tracks.

Hopefully polyphony will surprise us and announce a 250 premium cars figure !

Personally I believe there will be even more.

Currently there's for example at least one Premium model of a Mazda RX-7 FD-gen, MX-5 NA-gen, Skyline R32, R33 and R34. Now try remembering how many variations of just these cars there were in GT4/PSP and how very little, aesthetically, they differed one between each other. That's a chance to bump up the Premium car number significantly with minimal work by PD. Why keep them Standard?

Of course, things might not turn out to be how I think they should, but then, in case, I wouldn't understand PD at all.

Happy?

I'm not. Take away the race cars and we have 22.
How many cars are 2005-2008? Again take away the race cars and doubles and there's probably 40 new model cars since GT4 came out.

[2 cars/year per modeler] * [30 car modelers] * [5 years of development time] * [padding factor]

Well, the "padding factor" could be anything!

The other thing is, that 6 months is likely to be a (geometric) average, so it could be that some cars took longer, other less time - all it takes is a few to take much longer than 6 months and you've got a big hole in productivity (but no real impact on the average figure).

That said, I think I'm also looking for around 220 unique models.

Surely a value greater than 1!

I think the 3D car modeler team worked together on several cars at the same time, however. I doubt that one single person worked alone on a model at any given time. Or at least, not that often.

I agree. Maybe even something more.

It's a shame many cars are outdated... 80% of the roster will be 2005 or older. I wish they would find a way to make cars in less time. SCEJ should give them the liberty to hire more people. A game like GT could have at least 75 guys working on car modelling alone.

Then i don't know if the number of car modellers is low because KY just won't hire just for the sake of hiring it, and the guys working with him have to be alien-good.

Once the car list is out, we will hear a lot of complains... like, the new three VW's could easilly be standards, to me it's a shame they decided to make premiums out of it, and "waste" a lot of months on it.

I'm not not saying they shouldn't be in (i'm in for all types of cars). I just think they didn't needed to be premium taking resources out of a possibly modelled BTCC or WRC '10 car.

u realize any year, most of the cars are basically last years models slightly updated for the new year. ex, if u have a 2007 lambo gallardo SL, u dont need the 2008 version becuz its the same thing.

I don't care. I only drive in cockpit view when I'm damn sure I'm gonna win the race and I wanna have some fun, but when it comes to lap times, a tight and close race, a course with a lot of corners, chase or hood cam is my preferred view.

I think people should just appreciate the fact we got 200 cars that to the untrained eye will look like the real thing. Just think about it, 200 cars. I think most people will just own at least 60-80 premium cars, and maybe 120 cars in total.

The lack of cockpit view isn't really a huge loss, we have dynamic weather, damage, visually you have one of the best games of all time and it has yet to even be released, a course maker, NASCAR, WRC, some F1 cars, (and I'm probably forgetting some more categories)70+ tracks last time I checked, and 1000 freaking cars! That alone would make me buy the game and I would need a towel. All the other features would make me have the type of orgasm that kills me.

I'm pretty sure we can survive without cockpit view, and also, when you're racing, do you even take the time to look around the car and not focus on the road? Get over it, at least we have cockpit view in more then enough cars.

Not likely.

The 6mo figure is what you would call bull s**t buried in truth. Yes, it could take 6mo...but it doesn't in the sense that you think. Let me explain;

These cars are manufactured digitally, no? All these cars were almost certainly done in batches and those batches took 6mo to scan the full scale, get the legal paperwork in order, plug it into a computer, and who knows what else.

Now, if you were to render 1 car...yes, it would take 6mo. But if you render a batch of cars, say all the Toyotas, it would also take 6mo. Since they're done in a batch, you can say each one took 6 months and leave out the part about all of them being started and finished on a certain date. This is typical manufacturing jargon.

If any of you have taken a university level cost accounting class, you'll see what I'm on about.

You do not scan obtain the license for 1 car, then scan that one car, then do whatever to render it in GT5, and then repeat the process over again...and again...and again...1000 times.

That would take nearly 500 years to complete [figure in vacations, maternity, death, etc].

1000 cars X 6mo X 30 days = 180,000 days.
180,000 days X (1yr/365days) = 493 years.

Think about that.

And 40 new cars is not enough?

Is it supposed to be?

I don't care about gallardos. I'm talking about updated versions of normal cars. Audi, bmw, MB, nissan, honda, ford.
Having old 70s and 80s cars is nice, having old models of the current mfr lineups is not.

Yeah I agree, some more new cars would be nice, 5.0 mustang, Fiesta, new BMW 5 series, and new E class.

Also I would love to see some Mid setup variations such as the WRX and even the Normal Impreza. Most games always features the WRX STi version, but never the WRX or Impreza versions. So I would love to see those variants as well in the game for many cars. Like 2011 V6 mustang, 2.0T (as well the V6) Genesis Coupe, etc etc.

GT5 is shaping up to be a great game, now that spray painting and body kits are in, but the last time I checked 'real' drivers race 'real' cars from inside. They don't sit on the roof of their car while racing, and they sure as hell don't run after it from about 15m behind. Just thought this matters, since GT5 is The 'Real' Driving Simulator.

At first, I felt really bad for the people who want to use cockpit view exclusively and basically limit themselves to a 'measly' 200+ cars. Then, I recalled that GT1 had a 'mere' 180+ cars. GT3 had a 'paltry' 150+ cars. Not bad for the first iteration of the game on a 'new' platform, but I guess 200+ exquisitely detailed cars isn't enough for GT5--especially since it has been a long time coming. But then I remember that I've used bumper-cam exclusively since GT1, so come November 2, I'll have access to 1000+ cars. And then I feel better.

i smell a stinkin troll

I think he makes a very valid point. Some people simply do not like criticism aimed at PD WHATSOEVER, even when it is warranted. They are not perfect, they have flaws just like we all do and immediately screaming 'troll' whenever someone criticises something about PD or GT5 specifically, seems to lend to the old adage "methinks the lady doth protest too much"

Yes but your forgetting one thing this is still a video game.
