I don't understand why the top speed on the V6 model is so low, it just seems "wrong." Interesting though that the Cobalt SS is as fast as the Genesis 3.8, its proven itself quite a few times on the track... A shame that the interior can't match the overall performance numbers.

$20 says it's limited to 118mph, my Ute can go faster than that, with around 90kw less and a far less aerodynamic body.

Edit: Looking at that chart, I get the impression that the Cobalt is the only car not limited.

They are governed 99% of the time. Which is a speed limiter.

The government is watching me go 40mph on my hill? CRAP!

I'm not sure how these 2 posts connect to each other, but anyway, is the only real reason they limit car's speeds because of the tyres? If it has anything to do with safety and potential harm to people (through excessive speed), I don't see how limiting a car to 250km/hr helps in the slightest.

Speed governors? On sports cars?

I could understand if these were 1960's muscle cars that handled like trucks on castors... but honest-to-goodness modern sports cars... with 118 mph limiters?!?

That's frickin' hilarious.

Hey, Here is a Handy Chart:

I get the feeling that the V6 model is in a sticky spot.
Yay, I can still take on the new V6. :D
American cars aren't limited to my knowledge...
They are, indeed. I'm limited to 135Mph in the TL.

Some cars. My TL is limited because it has the transmission from the RL. The base TL & 6-speed Type-S are capable of 150-160Mph.

You mean you'd run out of ratios or they limited it to save it from drivetrain damage at high speeds?

My '05 Focus was limited at 115mph. It had at least 10mph more to go. My Camaro on the other hand was limited only because of the revs and gears. I have maxed it out at 130 plenty of times (top speed was estimated to be 129), you should of seen the speedo needle almost go completely towards the bottom.

I seem to remember reading about this before on GMI, and one of the Camaro engineers saying otherwise about how the car would go. As it stands, I seem to recall that the standard Cadillac CTS would be able to blow by it, not to mention just about every other car that GM makes. Hell, they still let the Impala SS hit 155 MPH, all while the driver is loading his khaki Dockers with bricks.

I suspect that it may be changed, but, I don't know. I would also hypothesize that the RS option may change things a bit, but that may all be hooey in the face of not actually knowing.

Drivetrain damage. It only has 5 gears (it needs 6 for more performance & better mileage), but the RL's tranny just isn't very stable above 125Mph.

My Ute should top out at 120mph (200km/hr) but naturally I've never tested it. But I have been in a slightly modified V6 Commodore of my vintage going a fair bit faster than that. (Around 230km/hr I'd say). No I wasn't the driver.

118 MPH? My mother's car goes faster than that!
WTF Chevy? Camaros never used to be speed limited!

Had ya goin' there, didn't I? I don't really care. Speed governors cost like 10 bucks to remove.

This doesn't quite tell the whole story, but interesting nonetheless. I don't like the idea of dollar per HP. It's like measuring the sweetness of an apple vs a potato. Still no denying the SS is a great value.

What I don't like about that chart is that they include the GT500 and SRT-8, both of which should be kicked out on pricing alone. Still, it is a very interesting grouping of cars. I would have liked to have seen the 135i in there as well, and maybe the RX-8 as well.

But, alas, no list is perfect. Perhaps I will have to make my own?

I'm getting irritated at everyone not even talking about torque--which is more important than bhp for these types of cars. But I digress...

Is this limiter also on the RS V6?

I really, honestly, don't know. Truthfully, I'm not even sure if the 118 MPH figure is even accurate at all. I'll have to sneak around GMI to find out for sure or not, and update you all when I know.

What is there to say? In any gear, at any speed, we know the Camaro will be the fastest for the money. It's already a given.

Just thought I'd mention that 2007-current Si's have a speed limiter around 130mph, the 2006 doesn't, and manages around 5-7mph better. I have no idea why they bothered limiting it when that is the case.

I'm so excited, the Camaro is being driven today isn't it? Reviews and possibly video  of the Camaro is coming within days.:D

I wasn't expecting this to be slower than the G8 GXP. Well, I guess it's only 0-60. It's better in the 1/4 mile. Which honestly makes less sense, since the SS has 275s in back and the GXP has 245s. Anyway, I'm sure as they start doing comparos with it the times will come down to 4.5s. As if it matters. Braking is impressive, MT has it stopping from 60 in 2 less feet than the 370z, but I think CD has it stopping from 70 in a few feet shorter. Grip from .88 - .92. 1/4 mile at 13flat and 111mph! Nice.

I want a Terminator VS. SS Comparo.

And a few more things:

I am tingling with excitement over back to back test drives of the SS and Z.
I can't wait for the V6's to start hitting the street so I can finally beat a Camaro. Too many LS1's still running around.

The skid pan numbers disappoint me greatly, a 4th Gen Camaro can pull those numbers (0.90 Gs).:odd:

Edit: For good measure, see it in action! Inside Line seems to have numbers a little worse than everyone esle though, could be track condition or simply dodgy drivers.
