PS3 General Discussion

hello, dont know much about the specs on the PS3, but does anyone think it would be possible to do the multiple screens without having to buy 2 more PS3s and 2 more of whatever game u own ( surround gaming )

thanx

Do you mean iLink or just multiple TV's? If you mean the latter, than yes, all you need is 3 RCA audio splitters. If the former, then maybe, but probably not.

Harrison: 'More Than 100' PS3 Titles In Development
harrison2.jpg
A new report by British newspaper The Guardian has examined the impending November launch of Sony's PlayStation 3, featuring comments from Phil Harrison, Sony’s increasingly high profile president of SCE Worldwide Studios, on "more than 100 games" in development for the console.

According to the report, Harrison, helping refute some of the negative PS3 buzz noted in the article, has indicated that Sony's efforts with regard to the PlayStation 3 are “going well”, and that the company is “in full swing, from a developer point of view, and over 10,000 development kits have been shipped.”

He added: “Developers now have final hardware in their hands, though there will be some upgrades to the operating system - there's nothing unusual about that. The new controller is now in developers' hands, so all the pieces of the puzzle are there.”

The report also notes that the hardware currently available to companies developing software for the PlayStation 3 features functioning Blu-ray drives, and that by using available Blu-ray burners on their PCs, developers “are now doing their first iterations of games running off [Blu-ray] discs,” as opposed to running from the hard drive or some other media in the interim.

However, the Blu-ray format has in recent months also become the focus of questionable press, following initial delays in its attempts to beat Toshiba's rival HD-DVD next-gen optical disc player to market.

But Harrison was quick to downplay any negativity surrounding PlayStation 3, as well the Blu-ray format itself, of which his company has a significant vested interest, stating that “right now there are more than 100 Blu-ray movies available today, in the US. More than 100 games are in development, and all the major third-party publishers have pledged their strategic support for the platform.”

It's PlayStation. It has a ton of 3rd party support, unlike the 360.

this article is a good example of what´s happening right now, its a good read directly from gameindustrybiz.

written off?

Pastime of the week for this particular part of the summer silly season - at least, among those who are quite finished scrambling to come to terms with the fact that E3 has gone to the great convention centre in the sky - seems to be coming up with new and interesting ways to cast doubt upon Sony's prospects in the next generation console race. Fanboy arguments supported by misconception and exaggeration abound - and that's just in the mainstream media and among analysts. What's going on on Internet forums makes even less sense.

Sony only has itself to blame for this, of course, and we can't say that our hearts are bleeding with sympathy for the Japanese giant. The arrogance displayed by SCE boss Ken Kutaragi and his US right hand man Kaz Hirai every time they open their mouths on the topic of the PS3 can be explained by their success in dominating the last generation with PS2, but that certainly doesn't justify it - and the genial manner of the firm's studio boss Phil Harrison can only go so far in terms of repairing the damage done to the firm's image by his overbearing bosses.

However, even if Sony is failing to endear itself to the media, to analysts or to gamers at the moment, that's no reason for the reality of the next generation console battle to be ignored. Judging from reports in the past fortnight, it would be easy for an outside observer to assume that it's all over already; the media paints a picture of Microsoft being victorious before the first shot is even fired, with Sony's overloaded battlecruiser set to sink before it even leaves port.

The fact is that there's little evidence to support that assertion. Even if Microsoft reaches its 10 million unit target by the end of the year - which does look likely - that's still not a lead that guarantees dominance in a market where the top-selling console last time (the PlayStation 2) sold over 100 million units. Both Sony and Nintendo are planning to ship their new consoles at such a rate that they could, in theory, have caught up or passed out Microsoft by the end of 2007; a scenario which is not exactly likely, admittedly, but certainly not impossible either.

Equally certain is that Sony's price point will dissuade some consumers - but a host of factors could conspire to outweigh that price point. If Sony has software with massive appeal to the mass market - something which Microsoft will still lack even coming into 2007, with the resolutely hardcore Gears of War being its key title for Christmas - or better again, if Blu-Ray really does prove to be as popular with consumers as movie bosses seem to believe, then the price point could prove inconsequential, at least for the first ten million units to pass through the channel.

This is quite an optimistic way of viewing Sony's chances, of course - but it's worth balancing out some of the pessimism which has been doing the rounds so often that it almost seems to be accepted as fact in some quarters. Much of this, it's clear, is influenced heavily by the American dominance of English-language media. Microsoft is so hugely successful in America relative to other territories that it can skew the global perspective; whereas the Xbox 360 has sold 3.3 million units in North America, it has sold only 1.3 million in Europe and just 400,000 elsewhere, making it fair to say that North America is still the only territory where the Xbox 360 has seen major success.

However, to listen to the media you would think that the success of the console has been replicated everywhere - which is simply not the case. North America is unquestionably a very important market, but Europe is expected to overtake it in size terms in the coming years, and despite the waning importance of Japan, it is still a key market - and other Asian territories are growing in importance. Microsoft is, in a sense, picking up the easiest consumers first. It is converting Xbox customers into Xbox 360 customers, and playing to a highly receptive home crowd - which suggests that the second ten million will be a lot more difficult than the first, because it will have to expand its reach not only demographically, but internationally.

That's where Sony already has the advantage; the PlayStation brand is synonymous with gaming around the world and across a huge demographic, not just in North America and with a narrow range of players. When reading the various reports which seem to imply that Sony has already failed or that victory is in the bag for Microsoft, it's important to remember that. Microsoft's use of first mover advantage has certainly been more impressive than many observers expected, but come November, the firm will still only have its home crowd in the bag. 2006, and even 2007, are only a warm-up - the battle for hearts and minds among casual gamers, international markets and wider demographics hasn't even begun yet.

I won't buy the PS3 at launch for sure

SNK to wait until 2009 to develop for PS3

According to Yoshihito Koyama, overseas marketing manager of SNK (King of Fighters, Fatal Fury, Metal Slug), is hesitant to support the PlayStation 3 from day one. Koyama gives his perspective to Kotaku's Brian Ashcraft:

"My first impression is that it's expensive. The PlayStation 2 is good enough. It's small and cheap. For us, for manufacturers, we have to invest in a new system, and the PlayStation 3 is a risk. There won't be enough consoles at launch. Few consoles mean few software sales. We need to wait three or four years. Maybe 2009-2010 is a good time to release a game for the PS3."

SNK is still supporting the PlayStation 2, whose titles are backwards compatible on the PS3, and the PSP. The Metal Slug anthology coming to the PSP will probably arrive for $39 or $49, according to Koyama's statements. The Nintendo Wii's Metal Slug anthology will have the same graphics as the PSP version, and is expected to arrive at launch, although Koyama admits he isn't sure when that is. His best guess is "sometime in the middle of November, just before Thanksgiving."

Atari also recently revealed that they would be holding off until 2007 to release a PlayStation 3 title.

'Full Auto 2: Battlelines' (PS3) - 4 New Screens Posted on Thursday, August 03 @ 10:49:04 PDT Full Auto 2: Battlelines puts high-speed vehicles outfitted with weapons and armor into fully realized and fully destructible urban street environments. Fierce combat-racing will ensue as you strategically use destruction to win races as well as leave massive devastation in your wake.

Full Auto 2: Battlelines, which is the sequel to the award-winning Full Auto, also introduces a new Arena Mode featuring team play and six different levels, each specifically designed for a unique type of multiplayer car combat.
"The destructible environments in Full Auto 2: Battlelines are both stunning and strategic, especially in multiplayer combat," said Scott A. Steinberg, Vice President of Marketing, SEGA of America, Inc. "The gameplay innovations of tactical destruction and team multiplayer vehicular mayhem combined with the tremendous power of Sony's PlayStation 3 console makes this sequel truly the next generation of combat racing."
Full Auto 2: Battlelines, currently being developed by Pseudo Interactive, has been combat-enhanced and fully re-designed with an extensive list of features entirely new to the franchise. Sony earnings increase while games division incurs losses

Sony posted better than expected results for the period ending June 30 citing success of a weaker yen, its movie division, increased sales of LCD tv's and digital cameras, and gains in its mobile phone joint venture with Ericsson. The company's life insurance and games division were blamed for the most significant company-wide losses. Gamasutra writes: "As a result of manufacturing and research and development costs prior to the launch of the PlayStation 3 [read: cell processor], the company's flagship games division saw a 29.1 percent drop in sales and operating revenue... Combined profits from the PlayStation 2 and PSP businesses, though, was described as 'relatively unchanged.'"

In addition, sales of the PSP and PS2 dropped with exception of an increase of the latter in Europe. While PS2 software saw a drop in sales, demand for PSP software increased. Maybe company-wide reliance on PS3 success isn't as bad as some have argued. If true, PlayStation execs can breathe a sigh of relief and get back to making racy ads.

When CD burners first came out, they were $800, and the 2x discs were $50 apiece. Same thing for DVD burners. Get a grip.

Oh, there's another thing. When dual layer DVD burners hit the market, I believe they premiered at $299, not $499 like I expected them too, and in mere weeks, the prices began dropping. Mine cost all of $60, and you can get them now for less than $40. The reason? The market is ravenous for the new storage formats like Blu-ray. It won't take a few years for prices to become reasoable. The migration to the new format will be rapid. I expect less than two.

I have to agree in pert on this, yes dvd and cd drives were mega expensive and so was the media, but I cant see BD/RW drives becoming mainstream so quick, but I do know that I can now buy a Sony Vaio AR11S - A Series laptop for £1800 and it comes with a BD-RE drive as standard, so you could be correct with your prediction, but I say maybe 4 years before every PC ships with either HD-DVD or BD drives.

I thought the XBox had done better in Europe than that. Hrm...

The 360 does have some good stuff coming out for it this holiday season, but the only game which I recall and that has me interested in a 360 is Forza 2. And if it isn't even on game industry radar screens as a key title for Christmas, it looks like Microsoft might be the ugly step-child this holiday season.

I'm probably going to pass on the 360 till sometime in 2007. I can afford to spend $300 to play one game (Forza), but I can't justify spending more than $500 to play Forza 2 (360+game+force feedback wheel). And too many 360 games are sounding disposable, like Over G Fighters and Chromehounds, the only games which had me glancing in its direction.

The truly fun, innovative, cool games are done by Japanese developers, so it looks like I'll be getting a PS3 solely this holiday season, and a Wii before I get a 360.

Well, that's not quite what I meant. It took about three years or more for computers to go entirely to DVD drives too. And Apple was first to go entirely to DVD with their Superdrive. But I mean for the installable drives to become reasonably affordable. Unless I get a Mac or laptop, which both are looking increasingly likely, I'll only build my own PCs from now on. Microsoft has been incredibly unprofessional in handling Windows, especially XP. I'm quite sick of them, more than any other company.

Ahh ok I get ya, then yes you could be correct.

new info from the new and re-vamped US playstation 3 site.

Q How do I save my Playstation 2 memory card information to Playstation 3?

ATo use saved data on a PlayStation 2 memory card, you must copy the data onto a virtual memory card within the hard disk. This requires a PS2/PSone memory card adaptor to copy the data to your PLAYSTATION 3. A memory card adaptor is designed to edit, up/download game saves to and from EMS flash card or smart media card.

Wow sounds interesting, at least this is newer info.

I bet the upload GT4 photomode shots to USB device will work on the PS3, with no problems.

I'm interested in knowing if ps2 games will be enhanced with AA. there have been memory card transfer kits since ps1. the Dexdrive was the first, it was the only way i could use the 3000GT(Supra) the NISMO GTR in GT1, they requred gold in the license test that i sucked at. DAmn that was al ong time ago.

Cancelled games on all platform. :)

List of Cancelled PS3 Games
It is no secret that the PS3 is a difficult development platform. The HD era of games requires a large investment in time and money. A bad game will incur huge losses, so some cancellations are necessary. What games have been cancelled and why are developers avoiding the PS3?

Killing Day
Debuting with an impressive video at e3 '05, this FPS for the PS3 has completely dropped off the radar. IGN concludes that it has been cancelled.

Theseis
This next-gen epic promises a huge open-ended adventure against a backdrop of Greek mythology. Due to high costs, Track7 decided not to develop this game for the PS3. Development continues for the PC and 360.

Elveon
This RPG was announced for PC, 360, and PS3. The original press releases have since been removed from 10tacle Studios' website but the gamespot and IGN pages remain. Only the PC and 360 are mentioned on recent press material.

Endless Saga
The PS3 recently lost its only exclusive MMORPG. A Webzen PR person had this to say:
"We have recently decided to cancel the Endless Saga project. Endless Saga was one of our ambitious development projects to enter into the next generation console market. However, after some rigorous development effort, we found the gameplay of Endless Saga to be short of innovation and creativity we seek to achieve in online gaming space."

Condemned:Criminal Origins
According to the original press release, Monolith Productions was planning on bringing Condemned: Criminal Origins to the PC and next-gen consoles. Gamespot has removed their page on the game while IGN's preview page remains. According to this Joystiq article from last September Condemned for PS3 was cancelled.

Smackdown 07
THQ's next-gen wrestling game will not be coming to the PS3. THQ provided this comment: "...the development team would rather concentrate their resources on the three other platforms." Development continues on the PS2, PSP, and 360.
Update: The PS3 will be skipping the '07 Smackdown release and pick up the franchise with the '08 version.

Oblivion
Originally announced for "future generation consoles", there were indications during interviews in 2004 on that Bethesda was planning on releasing Oblivion on the PC, Xbox 360, and PS3. Somewhere along the line, future generation consoles became just Xbox 360. Was a PS3 release ever part of Bethesda's plan? Rumors that a PS3 version may be released in the future support this theory.

Splinter Cell: Double Agent
Ubisoft's press release mentions "next generation consoles" but a faq on the Ubisoft forums detailing the status of the game's development does not mention the PS3. Double Agent is due out in September for PC, Xbox, PS2, Gamecube and October for 360. Will the PS3 get its own version when it launches in November? A recent article in Game Informer seems to think so, though an Ubisoft employee on the Ubisoft forums has crushed those hopes by stating "we are not going to release DA for PS3."

Besides Endless Saga and Killing Day, the PS3 has lost 6 previously cross-platform titles. Why are developers abandoning the PS3 when the PS1 and PS2 were the two most successful game consoles in history?

Before Sony announced the $499 and $599 prices for the PS3, developers were uncertain of their target demographic. Since the PS3 will be competing with the 360 and Wii, developers must market their games to appeal to the hardcore crowd of gamers who are dying to get their hands on Sony's 1080p bluray playing game machine. A game studio that was developing a mediocre PS3 game before the price announcement would think twice before spending millions on a game that won't sell. The $600 price tag will also reduce the PS3's install base, and thus potential customers. A leading industry analyst put it this way: "Many developers think the console's initial high price will lead to slow sales and are holding off on creating games for Sony."

EA has significanly reduced PS3 developement in favor of it's competitors. Atari and SNK are holding off on making games for the PS3 until 2007 and 2009. Ubisoft has stated that the PS3's price must drop if they want to compete, but have nothing but praise for the Wii. Many in the industry believe Nintendo's innovative console will have mass market appeal when it launches before the PS3 for less than $250. Existing GameCube development practices translate well to the similar Wii architecture, allowing development costs to be 1/3 that of the other guys. Microsoft is also in the business of trimming production costs. When the XNA Framework is fully implemented, identical game code will run on both PC and 360. John Carmack, the man behind Wolfenstein, Doom, and Quake believes the Xbox 360 has "far and away the best development tools." Hiromichi Tanaka of Square Enix remarked that porting Final Fantasy XI to the 360 was a fairly quick task while a PS3 version would need to be started from scratch, a 2-3 year process.

Sony has previously relied on its dominant brand name to attract developers, but that may not be enough this time around. The recent resignation of Sony's Developer Relations Manager and a Top PR executive shows that Sony may be having problems managing developer relations and/or sinking public opinion. Developers are not keen on the difficulty of PS3 development and often complain about lack of support. The high cost of PS3 development, the low install base, and the problems with bluray all lead to one problem: the PS3 may have a small library of games.

List of Cancelled Cross-platform Games

These cross-platform cancellations are probably the result of growing competition in the GTA-clone genre. GTA IV, The Godfather, and Saint's Row have a large amount of buzz and are probably scaring off less ambitious projects.

Scarface: The World Is Yours
This GTA style action game begins with Al Pacino's character surviving the gunfight at the end of the movie, allowing the player to rebuild his cocaine empire. Development is nearing completion on the PS2, Xbox, and PC. The 360/PS3 versions have been cancelled although a PSP version has been added.

Fear & Respect
Another GTA clone this time starring the vocal talents of Snoop Dogg. Cancelled for both PS3/360 due to growing competition in the urban-action genre.

The Sopranoes
Based off of the popular mob drama on HBO, this action game was planned for release on PS2, PS3, and Xbox 360. THQ has cancelled the PS3 version due to lack of dev kits and cancelled the 360 version because it "didn't look all that much better than the PS2 version."

Cancelled Xbox 360 Games

Frame City Killer
This 360 exclusive features Hitman style assassinations in a futuristic city. Unfortunately because of numerous delays and an unimpressive media response Namco has decided to cancel the project.

If there are any cancellations you do not see here please leave a comment and the list will be updated.

I'm not at all surprised to see those games listed. All of them either suck or don't do very well on the PlayStation console, with the exception of Raw Smack Down 07. That game is to far from its other console releases to bother making it a PS3 release. Oh, and I don't think it does very well, anyway.

Something very funny in that article:
A game studio that was developing a mediocre PS3 game before the price announcement would think twice before spending millions on a game that won't sell.:lol::lol:
In all seriousness, though, I fail to see why publishers are so stupid. If you don't make the games for it, of course it will fail. Morons. And they complain the Gamecube didn't have enough of a user base.

The other thing is that it will have quite a respectable user base long before a PS3 ever sits on the shelf unsold. They'll be flying off the shelves for months.

And that includes Splinter Cell? And Oblivion?
Yep. We have MGS4. Splinter Cell sells well on PS2, but not great. Besides, Splinter Cell looks better on XBox, I think. I don't like the series, I think it sucks, but, if I did like it, I'd buy it for my XBox and not the PS2.

Oblivion is already a PC game, and does well there, doesn't it? Why bother with PS3 version if it's going to cost a lot?

Hrm... I wasn't interested in any of those cancelled PS3 games. What does interest me?

Devil May Cry
Gran Turismo
Heavenly Sword
Killzone
Metal Gear Solid
Mobile Suit Gundam
(Naughty Dog's game)
NHL 2K7
Reident Evil
Resistance: Fall of Man
Sonic the Hedgehog
Tekken
Virtua Fighter
Warhawk

GT and MGS are the only two there, of and that 48 hours to Vegas game might be good (I think that's what it was called).

MGS
Resident Evil
Silent Hill
Winning Eleven
Tekken
Virtua Fighter
GT
Soul Calibur
Motor Storm
God of war
Resistance:Fall of man
The Naughty Dog's game
Assasin Creed

Those are the games that I am really looking forward to.

I say I am looking forward to, and since Soul Calibur 2 and 3 were released on PS2, and Soul Calibur 4 is not on your canceled list. I am gonna assume that it'll be released on PS3. Is that OK for you?

Killing Day
Debuting with an impressive video at e3 '05, this FPS for the PS3 has completely dropped off the radar. IGN concludes that it has been cancelled.

Well back when Ubisoft first showed this game it didnt even have a Developer and that was back in May '05, To be fare to the game it looked ok but nothing spectacular apart from the physics. Not a massive loss then.

Mr Deap
Theseis
This next-gen epic promises a huge open-ended adventure against a backdrop of Greek mythology. Due to high costs, Track7 decided not to develop this game for the PS3. Development continues for the PC and 360.

The only reason this was canceld was because its easier to port from PC to the 360, if they were able to port easier to the PS3 it would have been there. The company Track7 already stated that Theseis was a PC game first and a console port second, just like Oblivion. This game did look very good and its a shame it will miss any form for the PS3, Here's hoping for Theseis 2.

Mr Deap
Elveon
This RPG was announced for PC, 360, and PS3. The original press releases have since been removed from 10tacle Studios' website but the gamespot and IGN pages remain. Only the PC and 360 are mentioned on recent press material.

Another port, I personally trhought this game looked rubbish, but its a shame to loose it.

Endless Saga

Canceld due to the developer not being happy with the way the development was going, this is a good thing, at least they wont release a third rate product, looks to me as if they have gone back to the drawing board, and we may yet see this franchise on the PS3.

Mr Deap
Condemned:Criminal Origins
According to the original press release, Monolith Productions was planning on bringing Condemned: Criminal Origins to the PC and next-gen consoles. Gamespot has removed their page on the game while IGN's preview page remains. According to this Joystiq article from last September Condemned for PS3 was cancelled.

Well all I can say is that the rumor is from a Joysiq article, and they are a bunch of poor jurno's and havent got a clue, they tend to publish allot of rubbish especially where the PS3 is concerned. IMO if the rumor is true this isnt bad, the original condemned wasnt a big thing for me anyway so I cant see whay this would be such a loss.

Mr Deap
Smackdown 07
THQ's next-gen wrestling game will not be coming to the PS3. THQ provided this comment: "...the development team would rather concentrate their resources on the three other platforms." Development continues on the PS2, PSP, and 360.

Nothing to report, its a naff game and nothing of interest IMO, they are picking up at the '08 version so nothing to worry about for fans of the game.

Again as said above nothing to be worried about, if you want to play the game, play it on PC, as what Ive heard the frame rate is shocking on the 360.

Mr Deap
rest of article

All this talk of cancled PS3 games has only be brought into the forums because it is PS3 and was posted around various forums by 360 fanboys and sparking many flame wars around the net, if it was the 360 that was suffering loss of games, the PS3 fanboys wouldnt go into the 360 forums posting it, they would just brag in their own place. Then again the games that have been axed or just rumored to have been axed are nothing special. If it was MGS4 that had been canned then yes it would be serious new, but seeing as its not no need to worry.

Here the list of games that I'm looking foward on the PS3.

MGS4
VF5
FFXIII

Hmmm... 💡 That's about it.

That's why I won't buy the PS3 at launch. Maybe I,ll buy one, maybe not. I'm not waiting at all for Gran Turismo(I'm a big fan of Enthusia & racing games that are made only to be played with the wheel or Online.).

Partial TGS ’06 List Emerges August 03, 2006
by: Tanner Smith
Next-gen showing includes Xbox 360 and PS3 titles, yet no trace of Wii titles.
Today, Nikkei BP and the Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association announced a preliminary list of games that are confirmed to be at this year’s Tokyo Game Show. The list includes the games and booths of 93 companies that registered by July 21 for the 2006 show, which runs from September 22-24. There are currently 140 companies signed up, accounting for a grand total of 1,709 partition spaces.

While Sony and Microsoft’s next-generation platforms are represented, the list is void of any titles for Nintendo’s Wii. However, this is only a preliminary list, and several big names – including Square Enix and Sony Computer Entertainment – have not revealed their software plans. Some of the major players have yet to give their full plans for the show. For example, Konami promises that the “latest titles” in the metal Gear Solid and Bemani series will be shown, but the company isn’t giving out details just yet.

CESA also updated the schedule for the TGS Forum, which will be held on September 22 during the show’s business Day. Capcom’s Resident Evil 5 producer Jun Takeuchi will headline the Characters Session, joined by Takashi Yamazaki, who directed the opening movie to Capcom’s Onimusha 3 and the award winning film Always Sanchome no Yuhi. Takeuchi and Yamazaki will share the stage with Hirofumi Inagaki, producer of Namco Bandai’s Mobile Suite Gundam-themed PS3 shooter.

AMN will once again have full coverage of the Tokyo Game Show in late September.

Using this logic, here's the games on the PS3 that I'm looking forward to:

  • Gran Turismo 5
  • Gran Turismo 6
I would be interested in MGS4, but since I'm too young to play it, it'll be a title I might buy in 6-8 years.

Using this logic, here's the games on the X360 that I'm looking forward to:
  • Forza 2
  • GTR
  • Test Drive: Unlimited
  • Star Wars: KoTOR III
  • PGR4

Also, Tenacious D and KENJIusa, if all the games you listed were mostly exclusive X360 titles, would you buy an X360?
