I'm still only 46% done with the RC1 download with my BitComet. :nervous:

Vista would be released by the time I'm done the damn download....

-Is your computer Vista ready?
-Will you upgrade or just wait until you purchase new PC that already comes w/ Vista?
-Are you running XP, or still running a previous version of Windows?
-Do you use any other OS?
-Have you checked out Internet Explorer 7 Beta, Windows Defender, or Windows Media Player 11?
-Have you already used a developers' build of Vista? If so, what did you think of it?

-Yes, mine is good enough for the top dollar version of Vista.

-I'll probably just keep XP for awhile then get it once I hear a lot of positive reviews.

-Yes, I run XP Home but wanted XP Media Center :(

-I have used a mac before, don't know which OS it was, but it was really well presented.

-Yes, and I am now in a perfect meh state of mind for IE.

Yes, loved it, and it works!

Yes, really, really hated it for the sole reason that I couldn't sync, import, or export media files.

-And no, I haven't.

I've had RC2 on disc since Sat. Havent installed it yet. I've heard its kinda hard to get things the way they were after you've removed Vista on a dualboot setup. I've got 2 drives. 1st drive has the OSs. 2nd is storage. The 1st drive currently has XP and Ubuntu. I want to replace Ubuntu temporarly to play with Vista.

From what I've seen people seem to have alittle more problems with RC2 or atleast they're complaining about it alittle more than RC1. *shrugs*

I still havent installed any version yet. I just recently(today) upgrading to SP2 on XP. Its giving me alittle trouble with themes so I'm alittle tied up with that.

This is a hard choice since I've used windows all my life but I think mac panther has to get my vote thanks to being able to run windows on it.

I've boot camped Vista RC1 (since it was available from our school netowork) and I'm really digging it. It is a vast improvement froom Beta 1. I like it a lot more than XP (it's pretty :P). I've been using Vista a lot more than OSX recently, and there has got to be a reason for it. I'm thinking that IE7 is actually a GOOD PROGRAM! I have the Firefox beta, but IE7 is so much more fluent, stable, and blends in well with Vista. Now that IE is secure, I can use it instead of firefox. It is kind of like Safari now, blends in well to Vista and puts other browsers to shame in terms of compatibility. IE7 is better than Safari, IMO, because it has everything I'm looking for in a browser (bar a few)

1. Stable
2. Great Right Click functionality
3. Great Middle Click functionality (middle click on a Safari tab does not close it)
4. Looks good
5. Smooth

Cons
1. Lack of customizibility
2. The tab bar is far, far to thick, there's too much unused space in the y direction.

RC1 is a winner in my books. The main annoyance is the WINDOWS NEEDS YOUR PERMISSION TO DO ANYTHING window that pops up any timeyou want to change any system settings.

You do know that you can disable that, right?

Wait, when was it available here at school? I never know about these things. (I still have RC1 though)

Oh, and since you have defected from the Mac community, Steve Jobs has ordered me to find you and ki....

...talk to you.

You have to be a CS major to get it, and my roommate is.

I haven't defected. I still use a Mac, don't I? I'm just getting sick of OSX. I'm no Apple fanboy here. I support whichever software/hardware is better.

Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Turn User Account Control On or Off -> Uncheck the box, apply and restart.

Don't tell anyone, but that's the first thing I do after a fresh install of Vista.

Also, IE7 - It's been my main browser lately as well. Has the features of Firefox, but feels more 'finished'.

For IE7 - I think a better idea would have been to have the tabs go on two separate rows once the numbers exceed [select a number] so that I can actually still read the titles.

Because sometimes I have 15-20 tabs and its virtually impossible to read.

I think it's time to upgrade to a widescreen monitor :dopey:

[ Xgl/Compiz video ]

I was just wondering if anyone here has tried this.. Seems like it'd be pretty sweet if it all works.

I finally decided to try it out under Edgy, and it works great, even on integrated graphics! I haven't played around with it much, but here's a few screenshots:

"Glass" imitation

Minimize/Maximize

And finally, my favorite OS X feature, now on Edgy... exposé!

The amazing thing is, this is all with integrated graphics. Installation was very easy, since Edgy comes with Aiglx, and there's no slowdown and I didn't notice any choppiness. I'm off to play around with this some more.

Edit: Let me know if the pictures aren't loading for you either.

Is it me,or M$ got owned again.

Lately,I was thinking to make total move to Linux, beause frankly, this iditoic DRM schemes all-around whole computer industry are both frightening and sickening to me......

The Vista RC1 is giving me pains again. Got it installed flawlessly, and when I installed the driver for my wireless adapter, it said that the software was found but INF thing is invalid. Maybe I'm just not able to live with Vista....

There's a lot more than that, if you like eye candy...

How about it raining on your desktop?

Windows closing/opening in smooth and funky ways?

Multiple desktops (not new in itself), on the faces of a cube?

And one that I find really handy, if I've got a window maximised and I want to check the contents of another window behind.

In case you haven't guessed, I voted Ubuntu . Edgy (which should be out of beta soon) with Beryl for all the fancy effects is in my opinion miles ahead of Vista and, yes, Mac too. I've had very few problems with it, although I've heard wireless can be an issue. I'd recommend it wholeheartedly 👍

Nice screenshots, gregc 👍 I see that you're a fan of transparency. I always like to see other Linux users' screenshots. You'll hardly find two people with similar-looking desktops! Especially those KDE users...

Anyways, one of the great things about Beryl is that you can tweak and customize it to perfection. If you don't like eye candy, but still want exposé, you can disable everything else. Xgl/Compiz and AIGLX/Beryl have some serious potential.

I'll probably go back plain old Metacity once Edgy goes stable, since Beryl is still early in development. But I hope Beryl will be the default window manager in a future Ubuntu release. Maybe Edgy+2? They would have to tone down the effects if it's going to be default, but it would be great to see.

Thanks - the transparency is something I really like. I find transparent panels less distracting, for a while I even had the active window with very slight transparency but that was a little too much. Variety is the spice of life!

Yep, you can have it just how you like it. Actually it's maybe a little too adjustable for some people, it probably needs a simple configuration tool as well as the pretty advanced one that's currently there.

I've been using it for a while now, and I'm actually not sure I could go back to Metacity now! I've got so used to all the effects I find Metacity quite... dull to use. I'm hoping for Edgy +1 for default inclusion, although that may be a little optimistic. And finding a set of default settings will be tricky - they need to showcase the effects without overdoing it. It should be interesting, I personally think that this kind of stuff is a good indicator of the way the desktop will develop over the next few years.

Oh, btw, I can't see the full size images you linked in your original post either.

I just heard that Vista will have a very restrictive licensing system.

They'll allow you to upgrade your PC ONLY ONCE!!!!

Vista's licensing is hard to interpret, but here's my best explanation:

  • You can transfer your license to another machine once. This doesn't mean you're free to transfer the license for any reason, but should your current hardware experience a failure, then you are allowed to transfer your license to another machine.
  • You can upgrade your PC more than once! However, if Vista detects a new motherboard or hard drive, it will probably think that it's on a new machine. If this happens, then you can call Microsoft with an explanation and reactivate. This was the same case for Windows XP, so there's nothing new here. If anything, Vista's algorithm that examines the hardware changes is less strict than XP's.

I hope that clears up some confusion. If you feel that any of the above information is wrong, feel free to point me to the source of information and I can edit it.

What would you say is the best theme to make an XP an OS X?

And dougiemeats double-posted a little earlier (not to make a big discussion out of it).

Updates

Edgy Eft Release Candidate Available for Download

In preparation for next week's release of the "Edgy Eft," the Ubuntu team is proud to announce that the Release Candidate is available for download. Mark Shuttleworth also announced plans for Ubuntu 7.04 the "Feisty Fawn," but that's for another discussion. :sly:

RC Download Sites:

Yes, Ubuntu has Dapper artwork. Unfortunately, Mark didn't feel that the the art team's Edgy artwork met the guidelines that he set. Personally, I preferred the Edgy artwork, but for now, we'll have to live with Dapper's artwork. Besides, who keeps the default desktop background anyways? Kubuntu's artwork has changed, however, since it has a separate art team (actually, I think it's only one person).

Windows XP Service Pack 3 Delayed until 2008?

I hope this turns out to be false, but here's the link to the article. I know they want to concentrate on Windows Vista, but they can't forget that Windows XP users will outnumber Vista users for quite some time.

@GT4_Rule

Interested in Linux, are you? Since it doesn't seem like you're in much of a hurry to try it out, I'll start you off with a couple sites:

  • DistroWatch: Look to the right and you'll see a "Hits per day" ranking. That should give you an idea of a distribution's popularity. As you can tell, there are many good distros to choose from. I would suggest Ubuntu and Fedora, my personal favorites.
  • OSDir: Since everyone loves screenshots! They have screenshots of all the popular distributions, and much more.

That's should be good to begin with. Also, you might want to check out the official site of a distribution you're interested in. When you're ready for more info, I'll tell you what you need to know (preferably in the "Linux Transition Thread") There is much to know, from KDE and GNOME, to apt-get and aptitude, Xgl and Compiz, debs and rpms, Wine and Cedega, and so much more! :)
