Well that turned out nothing like I expected. My first two qualy laps were shockers, then I pulled out a 1:15.2 which was faster than I had been all week and without draft but it was still 3 tenths shy of Gyles, but crucially put me ahead of Kakundoo who came in third.
I got off to a good start and noticed Gyles stood still, clearly not wanting to get into a tangle with me and Kak into turn 1. I emerged out of the Senna S unscathed but looked behind and saw Kak had planted it into the wall, I could not believe this! From there on Kak, Gyles and I traded fastest laps but couldn't help but notice on the map that Kak was falling well down the order further improving my championship position.
After the first pit stops I had fastest lap with a 1:12.1, then Kak with a 1:11.2 then Gyles with a 1:11.1. Some time after the stops I was bearing down on the Renault of Kakundoo, again I couldn't believe this was happening. Though I was lapping him, he was easily as fast as me so we were racing as if for position. I got a better exit out of the Senna S and slipstreamed behind him and went through in turn 4 but he slipstreamed me back and crashed into the back of me at turn 5. He duly waited for me though he really didn't have to in the circumstances. I pressed on and then noticed Kakundoo disconnected with about 5 laps remaining! I was officially champ but it was a pretty underwhelming feeling, gutted we didn't get to race against each other properly as we were as closely matched as we had been all season.
I pushed hard on my second pitstop outlap and got the fastest lap as the cherry on the icing on the cake.
It's been a great championship and I'm mightily relieved to come through it on top. Special mention has to go to Kakundoo who suffered a huge amount of bad luck on first laps that compromised his races where he could easily have fought for the win. As it stood, we had hardly any wheel to wheel racing, apart from Monza which was the exception, incredible wheel banging for about 6 consecutive laps! Thanks to him we had an exciting championship battle!
Gyles as well, a true gentleman racer in the Fangio/Moss mould! Always very fair and blindingly quick.
Of course my team mate Appie as well, pleasure racing with you and we fully deserved the constructors championship!
Thanks to everyone else for participating, it was a blast for 18 sundays.
Last but certainly not least, thanks must go to Ardius for organising the whole thing. I think you handled the few post race arguments extremely well and were always fair we me and everyone else equally.
