It all looks very good and I was on the verge of thinking that this could be the first NFS title that I buy......but in the light of the recent Forza3 and GT5 videos at E3.....I think I'll wait for them and enjoy RACE Pro for now and V8 Superstars in 3 weeks time until the big boys come out.

Shift looks impressive but tbh the Track list and car list is a bit Meh and all that blurriness in game is just annoying for an old fart like me.

It's not that NFS has done a bad job of selling itself, it's just that F3 and GT5 have done a much better job.

I can't comment on trailer ... :-(

Yep, I was trying to find the link while you were posting.

missing cars

I don't know what to think of it. Do we need to combine the 2 lists or is the one from Berca the official list?

Berca, forget your NDA :D

Heeeeeelp.

You can see a Aston Martin from 1 min 30 sec. It's not the DBR9. It's one of the AS's on the list in red.

So could this mean that this list is the actual list?

EDIT: just read that thread about missing cars and it sounds like a whislist. :ouch:

Last edited:
From the looks of that list in the forum, it sounds like thats what he believes should be a in the game rather than the actual confirmed list. So, basically a wish list although the inclusion of that Aston is a bit weird.

EDIT: On closer inspection it seems like the so called V8 Vantage is actually a DBR9. This could be to do with the camera view (being low giving a different view point of the DBR9 we haven't see before), or NFS could have modelled it wrong making the back too high.

Exactly, no where does he say that is a real list, thats what he thinks is missing to make it how he wants it, aka a wishlist.

Review from a guy whom had to opportunity to play SHIFT in februari in the SMS studio.

Just about three weeks ago, I was flown to the United Kingdom to test out a new title in the NFS franchise being developed by the masters of simulation, Slightly Mad Studios. You may also remember these guys (and gals) under their former moniker, Blimey, and for delivering excellent titles such as GTR2 and GT Legends.

This Community Day was quite a bit different then they have been in the past with much more game play and a lot less presentations so that we could truly give you our perspective of the game.

The largest single change, and one I had not expected, was the platform it was previewed on. Not the Xbox 360 I had been used to sampling over the years, but the PC version of the game. This was very exciting for me, since I've been a 360 gamer since the Next-Gen platforms were released.

We were, however, given the liberty of utilizing the award-winning Xbox 360 controller plugged into the PCs so in a way, I even got to experience what it may be like playing on 360 as well. At least as far as the control configuration is concerned.

Anyways, enough about platforms and controllers and on towards to the preview!

The Driver Experience

There's been lots of internet buzz surrounding the new driver experience portrayed in Shift. All this stuff about inertia and g-forces, cockpit views and the crash effect. What was all of that stuff about?

Well, for the first time in many, many years, the interior cockpit view has been brought back to NFS and beautifully rendered in 3D with great detail thanks to Next-Gen technology. This new cockpit isn't just rendered either. It's fully functional. Right down to the heads up display on the Corvette Z06. I was completely blown away by the amazing attention to detail. I mean, the Z06 HUD? Who renders that in a video game?

The interior view is farther enhanced by the simulation of high speed effects and the sense of driving at those high speeds. The motion blur effect that simulates tunnel vision, that violent feel of building g-forces when you throw your car into a turn over 100 miles per hour. Incredible.

The team at SMS even went so far as to create that effect when those high speeds suddenly end. For instance, say you misjudge you turn and put you car into the wall instead of the apex. You'll certainly feel it as SMS has modeled the driver's head into the engine.

Visuals and Eye Candy

From the moment the game was turned on you were instantly greeted by Shift's simply stunning graphics. This game looks so real, so vibrant and full of life it makes you truly feel apart of the world represented within. Yet again, I'm blown away by the attention to detail that SMS has delivered in this game.

The way light reflects off of the metal of the cars, the way it changes when that metal bends. The way the cars kick up dirt and smoke from their burning tires. That familiar orange glow from the heat created by the friction of the brake pads against the rotors. There's no other word for it other then unbelievable. Just take a look at the new screens that have surfaced and see for yourself just how amazing it looks.

They've even given you another way to enjoy all of that beauty with the return of Instant Replays. What better way to drool over the graphics of Shift the to utilize the dramatic and seemingly race track inspired camera angles brought to you with the return of this much requested feature.

I think it's also very important to note here, that not once was there any sort of breakdown in the performance of the game when it was rendering all of these gorgeous next generation graphics. And to think, it was only February and the build I played was probably a month old. This game looks like it's polished enough for a release tomorrow, not one in the fall.

The Hills Are Alive With The Sounds Of Revving Engines

There's lots of games out there with amazing graphics but there's so very few that sound as good as they look. The NFS series has always been well known for it's stellar audio and has even received numerous awards for audio. Does Shift continue this trend?

The answer: yes it does. Take the award-winning NFS audio you've known for the past years years and throw it away because it doesn't mean anything now as Shift has risen the bar. I didn't even think it was possible.

In real life, cars make all kinds of loud and violent noises. In road cars, much of this is dampened to make the ride relaxing and enjoyable. In race cars there are no such steps taken to ensure a peaceful, quiet ride.

The Shift team have done an excellent job of capturing all of those wonderful, roaring sounds that race cars make. And I'm not talking about stuff like differentiating turbo and superchargers or tire screeching. I'm talking about ALL of those wonderful, roaring sounds these machines make on the track.

The violent screaming of a heavily modified engine, the crackle made from the plume of fire your exhaust spits out as you shift gears from your engine happily breathing, unrestricted from silly little engine choking emissions equipment from road cars. Even the awesome ?thunk? from those shifting gears can be heard.

On The Track, The Physics Of Shift

You now have an idea from my perspective on how the game looks, sounds and feels. But how does it drive? Can NFS enter the realm of the simulator and become king?

First off, any of you who are thinking Shift is simply a sequel to ProStreet are greatly mislead. ProStreet was a step closer to more realistic driving but by no means was it, nor was it trying to be, a simulator. It was only meant to be more real then it had been in the past.

Shift is taking a step further into the domain of realism. Throttling and braking becomes much more important as you must use a delicate balance of the two to obtain the fastest times around the circuits in Shift. The suspension independently will react to bumps and weight transfer and much more.

Individual vehicles feel much different as well. The Corvette Z06 for example boasted much different driving characteristics then say a Pagani Zonda. You can tell the difference between a sedan and a sports car, between a heavy car and a light car, between all-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive. I only was able to sample a handful of cars in the game (less then a tenth) but there is definitely notable differences between each machine.

Stalling Out, The Negative Aspects Of Shift

With all of this awesome stuff in Shift, I'm sure some of you were wondering if there was anything bad that I had noticed while playing the game. Absolutely. Will I be going into that at this time? No. Why? While the game is great for what it is right now and does indeed seem like it can be released tomorrow, the fact is the game is still months from launch.

There's undoubtedly quite a bit that may change about what I disliked between now and then and it's unfair to judge a game that is months away from impending release. Most of what I felt was either trivial or minor and didn't really steal the show away from what Shift has to offer as a game, which is far more what this article is about.

In Closing

Sadly, all good things must come to an end and I must close out this article. I'm a simulation guy at heart and though I'm known for being that guy who plays a lot of NFS, the truth is I've logged far more hours in simulators then I ever have in NFS. I've always used NFS as a way to expand my passion for driving. For when I just want to drive really fast and have infinite amounts of fun while doing so. It seems that just over the horizon there will be a game where I can express that hardcore, competitive desire within myself while having loads of fun the Need for Speed way.

I hope that this article was both informative and helpful, and that you enjoyed it. I'm very excited to finally be able to openly talk about Shift so if there's any questions, comments or concerns you have, please don't hesitate to do so in the space below and I'll be glad to fill you in on everything I know. Oh, and before you ask, the PC version absolutely shines this year!

EDIT: On closer inspection it seems like the so called V8 Vantage is actually a DBR9. This could be to do with the camera view (being low giving a different view point of the DBR9 we haven't see before), or NFS could have modelled it wrong making the back too high.

I really think it's a tuned V8 Vantage (or maybe V12 Vantage)

in game :

V8 Vantage :

V12 Vantage :

DBR9 modelled in the game :

We can actually see the difference. The car on the YouTube screenshot is indeed a V8/V12 Vantage

an NFS worth looking into. I gave up on NFS after the first underground edition came out, 2, most wanted, carbon, pro street, all about customizing cars and street racing, well not pro street, but it still wasnt fun either.

I really think it's a tuned V8 Vantage (or maybe V12 Vantage)

I'm not sure, try pausing the video just a couple seconds after that bit, the car looks more elongated.

Shift.jpg

However, on closer inspection to your screen shot I've noticed the "Vantage" badge sitting on the back, which is absent from the DBR9 and isn't as long as that on a DB9. So, yeah I got it wrong.

It's definately a Vantage of some form. Infact, I'm starting to ever so slightly believe it might be this:

drayson-racing.jpg

DraysonBarwellAstonGT2_011.jpg

Due to the way the rear bumper is built, it's entirely possible but it could be plasible that it is the racing version.

That whole thing was pure advertisement, gimme a break.

Corvett Z06 HUD actually looks like this:

article20050606_high.jpg

Which is more than what's in GT5P version.

Anyhow, here's a preview from PSXextreme and Arnold is huge GT fan:

I've long been a die-hard Need for Speed fan. I won't bore you with the details, but I will say this: I've been following the series since the very first game debuted with the enhanced PC port Need for Speed: Special Edition. It's been well over a decade since the arrival of the franchise, and it has remained one of my favorites, despite some of its lows. Even though Black Box released a technically flawed product with NFS: Undercover, they rectified the situation by issuing a patch in February that fixed the game's biggest flaws and brought out the fun. This, in turn, is a strategy of EA's that actually involves and makes space for NFS: SHIFT. Instead of churning out another arcade-like racer, EA will instead keep the updates for Undercover flowing which fills the criteria of arcade-racer. For an even more accessible game that fulfills the mainstream criteria, there is the Nintendo Wii's Need for Speed: NITRO. And finally, to fulfill the criteria of the simulator, there is Need for Speed: SHIFT.

Now, first thing's first, there has been talks of Black Box Studios being shut down following the release of Undercover, and many suspected the economy as the problem. Such is not the case, instead Black Box moved into another one of EA Canada's offices, leaving behind their old homebase. Why is this relevant? Because if I had simply stated that NFS: SHIFT was a joint project between Slightly Mad Studios and Black Box, you'd be confused, thinking "but I thought Black Box shut down?" Well, they didn't. In any case, SHIFT has been in development since mid-2007; I had a chance to sample the game last month and I walked away very impressed.

For a game that is still in relatively early development, SHIFT played superbly well. The game engine certainly moved better than any next-gen NFS engine we've seen thus far, and that's being at only pre-alpha stage in development. The framerate was super tight, moving at a crisp 30 frames per second with barely a frame drop in sight, no matter how crazy things got. The overall quality of the visuals was absolutely astounding though, as the game's texture work is every bit as brilliant as it looks in the screenshots. The cars were that detailed, and so were the interiors. There's no doubt about it, but this is one gorgeous game.

There also some neat visual touches such as the motion blur, and the crashing which causes disorientation if severe enough. When playing the game using the in-dash view, your camera is essentially the eyes of the driver, and with every slam of the brakes, every burst of throttle, every nudge and crash, the camera will jolt forwards, backwards, and side-to-side - it's a very cool effect.

The early build EA had on hand featured six cars: Pagani Zonda F, Porsche 911 GT2, Audi RS4, Lotus Elise 111R, Chevrolet Corvette Z06, and a Shelby Terlingua. The Shelby is a 2008 Mustang that Shelby put together specifically for NFS: SHIFT. The tracks are a mixture of real-life circuits with made-up ones that take place in actual locations (such as London). We sampled both the London track, and the Brands Hatch, both of which we found equally fun. In total, a selection of 80 vehicles will be made present, likely with more on the way as downloadable content, in addition to 15 tracks, once again, possible more with DLC.

Now, because this all new NFS is a sim and developed by one of the leading developers of racing-sims, you'd better believe that SHIFT boasts an amazing physics engine. You get into a car like the Audi RS4 and you immediately feel the advantage of having an AWD system like QUATTRO giving you all of the grip and traction you need in order to stay on course. But the second you move to a rear or mid-engined supercar like the 911 GT2 or the Zonda, all hell breaks loose (as do your tires upon every sweeping turn). Heck, even when you step foot into a car where the engine is front-mounted (Z06), you immediately feel the difference in balance and weight distribution. Each and every car feels like its got a personality of its own, and that really helps keep SHIFT away from the GRID comparisons many are throwing around out there.

Speaking of personality, you can, of course, customize your car to your liking with both aesthetic and performance upgrades. EA hasn't gotten into much detail regarding the depth of the customization, but we're expecting big things for this sim. To keep in tune with the subject, the A.I. boasts unique personalities, too, with drivers that will make mistakes and also seek vengeance if you're racing dirty. And, yes, when you're in the mood for it, you can take your personality online and race against 12 other players.

As you can tell, I loved every minute I got to sample with Need for Speed: SHIFT. And even if you've been miffed by the franchise before, this can very well turn out to be the biggest and best Need for Speed game in a long time. Look for it to hit September 22nd, 2009.

Personally I haven't bought a NFS game since Porsche Unleashed but Arcade or not, this is day one purchase for me.

Nissan GTR in Shift: I find the cockpit (experience and its graphics) to be better than Prologue, Forza 3.

Anyone have a pic of the Z06 HUD in shift?

Except the boost readout is wrong, It's good but I don't find it better.

Apart from the mad tyte crash reactions I don't think it looks as good as GT5 on the interior.

Did anyone notice while the GTR driver was crashing around worse than the n00bs on GT5 online that a message came up saying "New Driver Level Acquired"?

I don't know much about the HUD in the Corvette, but wouldn't you be able to toggle it through different display settings?

Now now. Don't ruin your turn around...

My mistake, I didn't mean it as an insult or anything.:dunce:

It's changed now so it can't be interpreted as insulting in any possible way.👍

No NFS game should ever be compared to any GT game , the only game NFS can be compared with is FORZA 3 since they are not SIMS they are arcade games (pretty OK arcade games). I am not saying I won't buy NFS shift but if I did I would only play it just for the fun part of it I won't take it as serious as GT5 .

Fixed again. :D

Knowing, and I said this on two other occacions in this thread, that SMS is developing this game and knowing that Eero is working on the physics (tire), and after reading a lot of information about SHIFT, I'm convinced that Shift is a sim. There is only one kind of physics in SHIFT => simulation. You can change the level of difficulty by switching on the driving aids. The beginners mode has 10% more grip to make it easier but it is still the same simulation physics.

The professional mode requires a steering wheel to be able to control the gas/break/car better. No arcade race game requires a wheel ...

I rest my case! :mischievous:

Forza 3 will most likely be a sim game too.
I don't know about Forza 3 but SHIFT is a sim.

Berca, I have proposal, suggestion. Can you please relate this to SMS?

I heard that SHIFT is going to release DLC. Well, since I don't have a credit card, I won't be able to download all the cars and tracks that will be presented as DLC.

Is is possible for SMS to create a solution, like GT5? GT5 (and this is not officially confirmed) is going to make two versions. A normal GT5 and a full more expensive GT5 for people who can't/won't buy DLC, so they can get the DLC for free.

There must be a way SMS or EA to come up with a solution so that when I (and others) buy SHIFT, I (and many, many other simmers) can enjoy the DLC as well.

:)

Any developer can call their racing game a sim as a matter of fact you or I can create a racing game and call it a sim . As I said we can call it a sim but the truth is does it really deserve to be called a sim NO. The NFS SHIFT developers are calling it a sim because thats how they want to market their game to fool people that dont know any better and who have never heard of the real driving simulator Gran Turismo.

Well I haven't played it, so I can't make the judgement.

I'm pretty sure those people would prefer an arcade game.
