Welcome to the Cappuccino Cup Racing Series, the fastest caffeine buzz in online racing!
This series features the Race Modified version of the Suzuki Cappuccino (EA21R) ‘95, an incredible little car that is a blast to drive and a challenge to master. Here you will find all levels of driver skill resulting in a unique mix of racing that produces battles throughout the entire field. It’s a series for newcomers to cut their teeth and for experienced drivers to sharpen their skills.

The Cappuccino Cup features 6 Rounds of championship racing with 3 races per round. There will be a race every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday at the same track and for the same number of laps. Drivers are free to participate in 1, 2 or 3 races each week but only their best result will count towards their championship points for that week/round. For example, if in Round 1 Driver A finishes 2nd in the Tuesday and 7th in the Saturday race they will receive 2nd place points for Round 1. Think of it as a 3 part race over the course of a week and only your best 1/3 counts.

Drivers must declare 1 night as their “primary race” so if a room gets full those drivers who have declared that night as their “primary” will get first dibs on the room. Drivers who have not declared that night as their “primary” may be asked to step aside for that night to make room for a “primary” driver. This has no bearing on your points for the week, if your best finish is on a non-primary night it still counts towards your championship points. This is simply to decide who gets the rights to be in a room if it has a full 16 drivers.

To help accommodate real-life schedule conflicts, only the best 4 out of the 6 Rounds will be counted at the end of the championship (Note: Only 1 of the 2 Enduro races can be dropped). When the 2 Rounds are dropped, any/all races that the drivers participated in during that Round will be erased. (If a driver received 0 points for a Round due to disqualification they will not be allowed to drop it at the end of the season.) Double-header races will each pay up to 25 points with 1 bonus point for pole position and 1 bonus point for winning both races. Enduro races will pay double points with 2 bonus points for pole position.

This unique and exciting format provides multiple opportunities for drivers to participate in any given week and also allows drivers to compete against each other for the championship even if they donÂ’t race on the same night. It also provides the opportunity to make up for a bad outing. If you make a mistake or get caught up in an incident early in the week you can race in one of the other rounds, if you score a better finishing position it will erase the low scoring night. All of this results in an incredibly exciting points battle that is always changing and unlike any other series on GTP.

*If you're experiencing connection problems here are some things to try to assist in reducing connectivity issues:

-Clear cache in GT5 (and even in the web browser)
-Restart PS3
-Restart Router
-Use automatic settings on router and PS3 and different settings
-Set router to DMZ
-Set static IP on PS3 and forward ports (as referred to in the manual)
-Remove firewall
-Go from wireless to wire
-Turn off all computers and other stuff
-Connect PS3 directly to router without anything else on
-Call/connect internet supplier and get the line checked
-The other big thing is to reset your modem. To do this you simply need to unplug the power to your modem for approximately 60 seconds then power it back up. A good time to do it is while GT5 is starting up.

Here's some more issues on forwarding ports...

This season will see a new and exciting format featuring both double-header races
and mini-enduro races with pitstops.
The event will kick off with 1 hour of Open Practice in Free Run mode where
drivers can learn the track and make adjustments to their Cappuccino's.
Following practice will be a group qualifying session that will be for a set
amount of time. If there are 10 or fewer drivers in the room everyone will
qualify as 1 group for 12 minutes but if there are more than 10 drivers in
the room they will be split into 2 groups and qualify for 8 minutes each
(times may vary at host's discretion).

Rounds 1,2, 4 & 5 will be a 2 race, double-header format with the second
race starting with the reverse grid based on first race results (last place
from the first race starts on pole for the second race). Each race in the
double-header will be approximately 15 minutes and the pole sitter for the
first race will be determined by normal qualifying. When the first race
finishes all drivers must go directly to the pits as the second race will start
immediately. Between races drivers are prohibited from making changes to
their car or leaving the room. If a driver is disconnected during the first race
they will receive 0 points for that race but will start on the pole for the
second race if they are able to rejoin in time.
Under reverse grid conditions, if a driver leaves the room after the first race but
rejoins before the second race the game will put them on pole regardless of
where they finished in the first race. This is not acceptable.
If
this happens the driver(s) in question will be asked to start from the back of
the field. During the race countdown they must press the "Start/Pause"
button which will "ghost" their car and allow the field to pass through them.
Once the field has passed the driver can un-pause the game and begin their race.

Rounds 3 & 6 will be mini-enduro's lasting approximately 40-45 minutes and
each will have 1 mandatory pitstop. The starting grid will be determined by
normal qualifying with the fastest driver first. Times for the enduro
qualifying sessions will be extended to 15 minutes for 1 group and 10
minutes each for 2 groups.* Drivers are prohibited from making their
mandatory pitstop on the final lap of the race but can pit as early or late as
they please outside of that. Drivers are not required to take any fuel on
their pitstop but will have to change tires (game doesn't give you an option).

1. Drive as clean and respectful as possible. Try to avoid contact with fellow racers.
2. No hitting, ramming, corner cutting, or intentional blocking allowed.
3. Accidents do happen. If you knock someone off course allow them to regain their position.
4. If there is any doubt as to whether you will be able to cleanly pull off a pass, wait till another corner.
5. NO DIVE-BOMBING (to the inside OR outside)
6. Bump drafting IS permitted as long as done properly. The bumping driver should back off before a turn.
7. Drivers are expected to keep at least 2 wheels on the track at all times.
8. Rage quitting is frowned upon
9. Drivers must stay in the pits during the race countdown
10. Drivers must not leave the room between double-header races.
11. Please keep chat box and mic chatter to a minimum during qualifying and racing.
12. Spread out on your warmup lap during qualifying. Try to keep10-15 car lengths between
you and other drivers at all times. If you're not on a hot lap let faster drivers by.
13. And of course please follow the GTPlanet Online Rules

thepenalties.jpg

For the newcomers to the series, this is a very, very clean and respectful
group of drivers and we prefer to be able to have everyone race on
their honor, with a few rules around just in case.

Our feelings about penalties is that we only want to use them if a driver
intentionally breaks the rules, shows gross negligence in an incident,
or repeatedly makes the same offense(s) from race to race.
We don't need to penalize every bump and rub.

We don't expect perfection but we expect gentlemanly conduct
and we'd much rather help drivers get better than punish them.
We would prefer to not hand out penalties but if forced to we will.
For Penalties, the stewards will have the option of:

- A warning
- Possible point deduction
- DQ from 1 race
- DQ from 1 week
- DQ from season.

Drivers will not be allowed to drop any DQ'd weeks from your
season total, they will be scored as a double-zero (00) in
the spreadsheet so it will be obvious it was due to an infraction.

Any members are welcome to open a room for practice and post details in the official thread. To make sure things stay consistent, members hosting a Capp Cup practice session must setup their room using the official Capp Cup settings listed below. This will ensure all times are accurate and any changes made to the car will be valid.

TO HOST A CAPP CUP PRACTICE SESSION:
1. Go to the "My Lounge" settings in the GT5 Settings screen and change the room name to "GTP Capp Cup".
2. Go to the "Community Tab" in GTLife and on your profile click on "My Lounge (coffee cup). It will ask you if you want to create and join your lounge, answer "yes" to both.
3. Once the lounge loads go to the Restrictions tab (far right) and set the Max Power to 138hp, the Min Weight to 590kg, the Tires to Race Hard, all aids disabled except TCS and Driving Line.
4. Go to the Event Settings tab (second from right) and change the Track Edge Grip setting to "Real".* Damage should be set to "Light" and Fuel/Tire Wear should be set to "On". If you plan on doing any races you will set the number of laps and end race timer from this screen.
*Note: You must set the track grip before loading the track in order for the Live Timing Monitor to work properly
5. Go to the Track Settings tab and select your desired track. If it is a time/weather change track be sure to check the time/weather setting as the default is often not what is desired.

* TCS IS ALLOWED *
* DRIVING LINE IS ALLOWED *

Each driver must declare 1 night as their "Primary Points Night" which will be the night they are most likely to compete for the points championship.
If the room is full, preventing you from getting in and this night is your declared "primary race", send me and/or the stewards a PM on GTP/PSN and we will ask a non-primary driver to make room for you. If you're able to run on other nights then you can run in as many as you'd like, you're NOT locked into the points you score on your primary night. If you race all 3 nights, which ever one you score the highest in will count towards your weekly points.

Don't have the time to commit full-time to the series? No problem! At the Capp Cup we enjoy having a full grid of cars and usually have a few slots available so if you're wanting to see what all the fuss is about or can only run part-time you're more than welcome to join in on one of our race events. Just make a post with the following info so I can add you to the list but indicate you will only be a part-time driver. If the room does happen to get full I may have to ask you to make way for a full-time driver but so far that has been a rare occurrence.

When registering for the Cappuccino Cup please use the following format and I will update the list accordingly.

Car # GTP Username (PSN name): Body colour / Wheel colour
Tuesday: (8:15pm EDT): yes/no/sometimes
Friday: yes/no/sometimes
Saturday: (10pm EDT) Race/Saturday: yes/no/sometimes

capptuning.jpg

The tunes provided will give you a good general setup you can run at most tracks and be on pace, provided you have the requisite driving skills. These are NOT mandatory tunes for the series, they are simply to help provide a starting point. However, no tune on any car is suited to every track. There is one adjustment to this car or any other in the game that we believe is perhaps the most crucial and that is ride height.

Some of you may not be aware, but the effectiveness of the ride height settings in GT5 is reversed. In theory, a lower front ride height should provide slight weight transfer to the front of the car and more downforce, resulting in a tendency towards oversteer. In GT5, lowering the front end results in understeer, and likewise, raising the rear end also results in understeer. So for the Cappuccino, if you find you don't have enough front grip, raise the front ride height a point or two and try a few more laps. Alternately you can lower the rear of the car as well. If you find the car oversteering, with a little too much front end grip, lower the front and/or raise the rear of the car.

The LSD settings also affect the handling of the car. You can change the Initial Torque setting if you like, but the Accel and Brake settings have a big effect on the handling. The Accel setting controls inside/outside wheelspin. Set it too high and the outside rear wheel will spin on sharper corners resulting in a lost of control and possible spin.

Too low an Accel setting and you'll get inside wheelspin, not resulting in a loss of control, but in a loss of traction and acceleration, affecting overall lap times. The Decel setting controls how much differential lock there is under braking. Too high a setting and the car will resist turning through the corner but will be very stable. Too low of a setting and the car will turn a little sharper, but the back end can be skittish or less stable during cornering.

You have to experiment at each track with it's unique set of curves and elevation changes to find the best settings for your driving style and controller/wheel. Of course all the various settings on the car such as camber, toe, dampers, springs etc. all have an effect on handling, and if you want to do further research, look into the Tuning Forum of GTPlanet and you'll find plenty to keep you busy.

capptuningtrannyandaero.jpg

To setup your transmission, first reset your gears to "default". Make sure your Final Drive is set to 5.125 (should be default) and then set your top speed to 155mph/250kph. Once you've done this the next step is to change your individual gear ratios to the values displayed above. Having completed this you will no longer need to adjust each individual gear, to adjust your top speed for different tracks you will simply adjust your Final Drive (this will move all the gears higher/lower but maintain the ratios between gears). To gain a higher top speed move the Final Drive slider to the left, you will see your top speed change in the upper right hand corner. To gain a lower top speed move the Final Drive slider to the right.

For front and rear Aero set both to the maximum. It is possible to gain 1-3mph on a long straight by reducing your aero but you will sacrifice handling through the turns and it will ultimately hurt your lap times.

Capp Cup Top Tips!

* Shift your Capp at 8,000 RPM. Even though the redline is somewhere north of 9,000 the torque
curve drops off sharply at 8,000 and you will quickly lose power. For those that prefer
automatic transmission, this car is not suited to an automatic because of
the sharp power drop off after 8,000 RPM. Auto vs. Manual transmission
will cost you 1-2 second per laps on most tracks, all other things being equal.

* Give your tires plenty of time to warm up. This is a lightweight car with low-hp and it sometimes takes
a while to get heat into the tires. Some tracks take longer than others.

* Keep an eye on your horsepower, when you see it start to drop it's time for an oil change.
It seems the Capp likes its oil changed after about every 4-5 races.

* Clear your cache before entering the room! This will help reduce connection problems.

Below you will find a series of videos that we hope will be helpful to everyone in the Capp Cup.
These are short videos that illustrate the "bad" and "good" way to handle certain situations that one might
encounter during an average race. They will also serve as a point of reference, in the case of any disputes
or complaints certain videos can be referred to in order to help illustrate a point.
This section is still under development so stay tuned for more content!

From the Desk of JohnnyPenso/yuritardid:

"The cars are small, the power is low, but the racecraft is exactly the same as in a GT500 or LMP race, just slower. When I was younger and raced Karts I raced slower 4 stroke karts for a couple of years and that's where I learned to draft and pass and set someone up because the karts were so even. When I moved up to the much faster two cycle karts I think I was a much better driver because I learned everything at a slower pace.

The main thing to keep in mind is, when you aren't in the middle of a heated multi-car battle, is to keep thinking ahead. I'm always asking myself,

"Where do I want to be next lap, the lap after that...etc.?"

"How many laps should I follow driver X waiting for him to make a mistake before I make a clean pass and am I falling behind the car in front of him?"

"Can I catch the car in front of the car directly in front of me before the race is over, and if not, then I'm racing only for this one position so plan accordingly".

I put as much effort into going for a win, as I do running around in 5th with 2 laps to go trying to figure out how to get past the 4th place guy in front of me. I also do my best to signal the car ahead of me whether I intend to challenge lap after lap or am content to ride behind, give a little push and make up some ground on the cars ahead and behind. I figure if I bump draft someone a couple of times he realizes that, barring a mistake on his part, I'm going to stay back there a while and not challenge every corner. I do this because I want him to go as fast as possible and carry me along with him.

Never get discouraged. Just keep practicing running laps and work on your racecraft and strategy and it'll all come together.

JP"

Below are some links to threads in the general GTP forums that we believe
will be of benefit to Capp Cup members, whether it be something that helps
them in the Capp Cup series or just GT5 in general. We will add new links
as we come across anything we think might be useful.

From the preseason discussion thread. Try one of the tunes in the tuning section GT350. You'll find those setups very stable and you can make adjustments to the ride height to get the feel of the car you want depending on your driving style and controller/wheel setup. Remember these are Race Hards not softs, and while they have a lot of grip, they are of course not as forgiving as soft tires.

Let the Season begin!! Excellent job on the graphics Brandon!!!

When are you running the preseason at Tsukuba?

I've update the main posts with info for the preseason races. Sorry, I got all this uploaded right before I left work and still have some tweaking to do, but at least it's up! :) We will be starting the preseason tomorrow night, lounge will be open by 7pm EDT. No points for preseason races or anything, just a chance for us to shake the dust off and for new-comers to get their Capp's broken in.

I'm the 10th to register for Tuesday already!!!!

Tuesday is the popular night! It was that way the past 2 seasons also. Backs up your comments about having more racing series on weeknights! đź‘Ť

Welcome back!!

I have to ask, is the number plate in your new avatar photo from the side of your Cappy? :) That thing came THIS close to bringing home the Championship last season!

It's actually from the side of the Integra that I run in the Integra series, which nearly won a championship itself. I could have taken the picture from the side of the capp, but it wouldn't have made a difference in the final product. I run the same colour/number combo in all of the RM series I run in so the picture would have turned out identical :sly:

Agreed. I know you run in other series so it would have made me a little proud if it was from the Capp. :dunce: This little car has made quite a name for itself over the last few months, not bad for being run by an amateur. lol

FYI, this thread is still under construction but should be complete in the next day or so. I'm going to rearrange a couple things and add a couple more things so keep checking the main posts. Any major info or changes concerning the series I will put in the "News" section throughout the season so check it regularly too. I will be moving the "Next Event" section closer to the top so everyone can easily find out what track we're at. đź‘Ť

Nice job on the tunes. I got in my Capp for the first time tonight (in my lobby/online). I usually use Tsukuba as a testing ground for whatever reason. I tried a bunch of the tunes that are posted on GTP and did not feel very comfortable with any of them. I felt like I really had to hesitate getting back to the throttle with most of them and dumped it more times than not when I tried to push. I was running mid 1.04s with those set ups. I then tried tune 1 posted here. I quickly was running mid 1.03s with a 1.03.2 as my low (do 5 lap stints). I tried tune 2 and finally got down to the mid 1.03s. Definitely better than the online tunes, but not quite as good for me as tune 1. Got Bob running the car now to break in the engine. Out of curiosity, what times are you guys running on Tsukuba? I plan on trying Suzuka east tomorrow night to see how close to that 55sec mark I can get to.

I think season one we was 1:02-1:04 on sport softs.

Figured I still had some more work to do.

Sounds like you're headed in the right direction though. Glad the tunes helped out, Mr. JohnnyPenso and myself worked with a top GTP tuner to get those together. To avoid overloading him with requests and questions he shall remain The Anonymous Tuner. I run with the first tune option and it's hands down the best my car has ever felt, I can really push it and don't have to baby the throttle.

Also, even though I said we're still a bit under construction here feel free to post comments, question and general Cappuccino discussions. If anyone has questions about the new format don't hesitate to ask.

Can I change my primary race day to Friday? I just realized the time difference and figured out I have class then.

You don't really have to announce your main race day. Unless the grids are full you can just show up whenever you want.

I thought Tuesday's race was going to be earlier. If it starts at the same time I'm not gonna be able to race this season.

..... Got Bob running the car now to break in the engine. Out of curiosity, what times are you guys running on Tsukuba? I plan on trying Suzuka east tomorrow night to see how close to that 55sec mark I can get to.

I'm just going on memory, and it ain't what it used to be, but I believe the pole times for Tsukuba were around 1:03 flat last time we raced there on Sports Softs. I'd expect some low 1:02's or even high 1:01's are possible with RH tires. I don't think the RH tires make as much of a difference at Tsukuba as it does at other tracks. Remember also, it takes a few laps to get the tires up to temperature unlike heavier cars which are up to temp in a lap or two (the tires never do get fully warmed up in the Cappy). You won't get down to your best lap times until at least lap 3 or beyond. The extra 4 hp from the break in will make a difference as well.

Correct on the first point. Declaring a primary night is mainly for those people who can only race 1 night per week, this is a way of making sure we can get them in the room. By having everyone declare their primary night I have a quick reference to figure out what to do if a room gets full but more drivers want/need to race.

About Tuesday, I had proposed moving Saturday's race to earlier on Tuesday so we could get 3 races done in just 2 days. After discussing with RDAardvark (our resident EU spokesperson) we realized that Saturday afternoon is the best time for the non-American crowd and moving it to earlier on Tuesday may not help attract EU drivers but would surely limit the number of NA drivers that could attend. So we opted to keep it on Saturday and RDAardvark is going to be the alternate host for that day if I have a schedule conflict.

Are you not able to make any of the other days this season? It would be :( to not have our defending Champion competing!

I've added a new video for Kerb Cutting to the Racing School section. I've also taken down the video on Passing because I want to make some adjustments. The "Next Event" section has been moved towards the top of the first post so it can easily be found when you click on the thread.

If anybody has requests or ideas for the Racing School videos of common incidents that occur let me know. Obviously I'm not going to try to cover every possible incident that could occur but I'd like to cover the main ones. I have one on Bump Drafting I'm going to add and will be making one for Blocking too. đź‘Ť
