Oh and btw Stigs, you should get rid of the asteriks around the thread title as the mods will come in and get rid of it anyway.

I mean, you could leave it up if you wanted to have a bit of extra spotlight until the mods do it, but yeah. All yours.

Cheers guys, have a good one.

Thanks for the heads up, I had no idea that was frowned upon. But I'd rather not have to be told by them! 👍

It's not really frowned upon. They just remove them without saying anything. I said it so you wouldn't be surprised when it happened :)

Notice no one else has any characters wrapped around their titles. They clean house like once a week or so.

I remember they used to be everywhere, fancy flags and stuff. I do everything I can to keep us on Their good side so I won't do it anymore. ;)

Hats off to Brosif on the 1:01.5xx, I can only hope for a 01.9!

He's always good at the 'kuba though so I'm glad I even got that close. He killed it in the Lotus pre-season race so I wasn't too surprised, home track? :)

Anyway, hope the race goes well, can't wait for the proper season start 👍

Well, I hope you guys had as much fun as I did tonight, that was a real good time! I think overall (besides a few Cappuccino Growing Pains) everything went pretty well. Sorry about forgetting to read out the starting 5, I got distracted talking about a possible glitch.

Anyway, here are the results from the first 2 preseason races at Tsukuba. There were some close battles throughout the field in both races and I hope that's a sign of things to come! 👍

*BTW, I surpassed 1,500 posts today. Probably 60-70% of them are Cappuccino Related. Lol

Pretty happy with 3rd and 4th... Better than I expected after seeing the quali times! 1'01.5  Best I could manage was 1'02.2.

I noticed during the race that the cars at the front (iforce and yuri specifically) seemed to have better straight-line speed. Are you guys running less than max downforce? Does 3hp extra from break-in make that much difference?

Anyway, it was great fun and I can't wait for the rest of the season!

3hp will make a small difference but not a ton. Races have been won with 134hp before, but both of those guys get great exit speed and that will add up at the end of a long straight. Could be a bit of draft too, but less downforce won't really gain you anything at Tsukuba.

The HP on a small car is pretty substantial. Good chance they run less aero too.

Full aero's always faster. Only under the circumstance in which you can gainfully alter the character of the vehicle's handling in order to better drive it will performance will increase.

Running less aero for straight line speed only nets about a three mile an hour speed advantage that's subsequently mitigated through the resulting lower grip while cornering. I think you were just noticing their draft tow, or they were bump drafting, a technique you'll really have to get to know well when racing with us. In-fact, I think Brandon should make a short educational video about it.

I was sliding all over Tsukuba today. Probably bumped more people than during the whole 2nd season. And, sadly, I'm not gonna be able to get enough seat time before Suzuka. Oh well, gotta practice line-blocking skills for the second races :)

The 3 hp from the break in will make a difference for sure. But I did run full downforce and I'd bet dollars to donuts that Brosif was at full downforce as well. There are a couple of possibilities for the extra straightline speed. Tranny and getting on the throttle early. At Tsukuba I'm on almost full on the throttle by the apex and I could tell Brosif was too. Getting on the throttle a split second sooner, carries that extra speed all the way down the straight. My tranny was set up so that in 5th gear I was pretty close to 8000 rpm entering the last corner and the first corner.

I set up the tranny by hitting the reset, lowering the top speed to the lowest possible setting, adjust second and third pretty far to the left, left first alone for a good start, and then adjusted the final gear ratio so that I topped out around 8000 on the last and first corner.

Hope that helps.

I already have the footage, just need to assemble it. :)

I have added and updated version of the PASSING video to the Racing School section, I should have one on BUMP DRAFTING up today or tomorrow.

I've also revised the section on how we will handle sending a car to the rear of the field, based on Owens brilliant solution he demonstrated last night. 👍 for that suggestion Owens, it's incredibly simple and I love it!

"If a driver leaves the room after the first race but rejoins before the second race the game will put them on pole (under reverse grid conditions) regardless of where they finished in the first race. This is not acceptable. If this happens the driver(s) in question will be asked to start from the back of the field. During the race countdown they must press the "Start/Pause" button which will "ghost" their car and allow the field to pass through them. Once the field has passed the driver can un-pause the game and begin their race."

Very good race, i just have to learn to stay concentrate more than 5 laps. Never race more than this, this is the first time. I stick to the front pack the 2 times but spin both race same point at first hairpin. The first race , the track was free to come back imediatly but the second, i have to let everybody pass to avoid some accidents.
I note also difference of speed, my car is broken with full HP with a good gearbox, beginning the straight with exactly same speed and the other car clearly flying away mid straight, or passing me in the same conditions.
A lot of respect from every racers to every racers, hard battle and just a few acceptables bumps... It was a great pleasure to race against all of you. Thanks.
I do some laps on Madrid short last night, i never race it, but i don't think it will be so good. 3 normals curves, straight, 1 hairpin ????? Is there no better choice ????? with all the tracks in GT5 ??
Have a good day everybody

I always run full downforce with this car. As Wardez mentioned, even when running minimum downforce the straight line speed advantage doesn't outweigh the loss of grip experience in the corners. IIRC, when testing the effect of downforce on the Cappuccino's top speed I found that a minimum downforce setup yielded a speed of 152mph down an un-chicaned Mulsanne straight. With maximum downforce I was still able to run 149mph but the grip level and cornering speeds were significantly greater which resulted in faster lap times.

Yuri and I were getting on the throttle out of the last hairpin around the same mark but his gearing was better suited for the track than mine and was able to pull .1 to .15 of a second gap through that last sector.

I had a lot of fun last night and I am excited for the upcoming season. I look forward to racing with all you new duderinos.

Cheers

It was great to have you race with us praiano and I'm glad to hear you had a good time! Maintaining momentum and getting a good exit speed are key to doing well with this car and that probably accounts for the discrepancy in straight-line speeds. 1mph faster exit speed can result in a 3-5mph faster speed at the end of a long straight.

As for Madrid Mini, this was one of the few Cappuccino suitable tracks left in GT5 that we haven't run in the first 2 seasons and that's the main reason I chose it for this season. I've never been a big fan but we did some racing there in the off-season and it proved to be a lot more fun than I thought, so hopefully it will turn out well.

Ahem, I believe the term you're looking for is "Capperino's", we all love our Cappuccino's, not our BrosifDuder. Glad you had fun though, I really enjoyed it too and think this is going to be a really entertaining season! 👍

New BUMP DRAFTING video added to the Racing School section. It's a little tricky to do this one because the camera angle obscures most of the lead car but hopefully it gets the point across. 👍

Excellent videos Brandon. I would not be surprised if other Race Directors begin soliciting their use from you. Make sure and collect a sizable licensing fee!!

The passing one illustrates a very subtle point that a lot of guys racing online in general don't get, the whole, dart out at the last minute under hard braking and rub past you pass. Even if there is no contact, it's still not an acceptable pass according to the GTPlanet Rules of Racing. The Cappucino Cup has mostly been devoid of this divebomb sort of pass in my experience, but it sure does help to illustrate it's finer points through video aids.

Looks good and makes sense. The lead car is plenty visible.

For those of you out there who haven't experienced bump drafting, try it out beforehand. The first time I got bumped, it literally scared the bejazus out of me! Actually, it still does!

Also noticed a new (to me) video on curb cutting. 'Bad cutting' kinda seems like it goes beyond what's usually expected to be allowed (let's say by me, but there are plenty of series & WRS events where red curb=part of the track). Personally I'd prefer this kind of rule (shown in 'good kerb' piece), since IRL that's how the most kerbs are attacked, but I think this needs to be stressed explicitly. Basically a big bold 'curbs are not part of the track' in rules, not a video in 'racing school'.

This is a tricky one, for sure, since different leagues allow different amounts of kerb usage. I tried to split the difference with the "bad cutting" example, but really with this skinny little car it's kinda difficult to tell exactly where you are. There have been plenty of times where I thought I had two wheels still on the track but when I watch the replay I was all up on the kerb.

I'm of the opinion that 2 wheels should stay on the track at all times but as long as we keep it close and nobody is blatantly cutting the kerbs to make a shortcut I'm ok with it. I have added a statement to the Rules though. 👍

So last night for me was pretty abysmal. I'm losing half a second or more in each section. Any tips?

Watch other people on track to see what line they are taking as well as their throttle and brake inputs. For instance, last night I noticed that you were braking for the right-hander just before the Dunlop bridge but that corner needs to be taken flat out to keep your momentum going into the last hairpin.

That being said, these cars are all about keeping as much momentum through the corners as possible. Drive the car as hard as you can into a corner and if you crash dial it back a notch and try it again. We're racing virtual cars so there isn't a repair bill to worry about. :)

I would even go as far to say that with these cars you will find there are many more corners where you need only to lift, rather than brake (or you could left-foot brake) than you would find with more powerful cars.

I've been breaking in the car with 0 upgrades other than RM and RH tyres. So I started at 71 HP and did a few offline practice laps at Tsukuba and Grand Valley. At Tsukuba, the only turns I was braking at were the hairpins, turn 4 (the left hander coming out of the esses before the Dunlop turn), and a slight tap or left foot braking for the final right sweeper. Grand Valley had some similar pleasant surprises, though I don't recall specifics. I'll try to post more once I'm up to full power, as I plan on getting in some practice runs tonight and tomorrow on all the courses from the season.

This is true but I sometimes find it to be easier said than done. If I can get my car settled and into a straight line coming out of the second hairpin then I can get a good entry and run flat out through the Dunlop turn. But often my car is still a bit unbalanced coming out of that hairpin and I have to lift ever so slightly to get the front end settled. That tiny lift would cost me up to 4-5mph by the time I got to the third hairpin though so I really focused on setting up for the Dunlop turn more than any other on the track.
