May 8, 2006 - At Sony's press conference we were shown a number of tracks from the upcoming Gran Turismo HD, which will be present on the show floor at this year's E3. Kazunori Yamauchi, the director of the title presented the game, which has only shortly been in development for a short time and was running in 1920 by 1080p. According to Yamauchi, GTHD will be one of the first times that a television would ever display a non-compressed high definition signal, and the gameplay has been optimized for HD resolution. In fact, the game is supposed to run at three times the detail of regular HD broadcasts that are being shown today and 12 times the detail of Gran Turismo Four.

Yamauchi showed off some of the four levels that will be on the E3 show floor, including Tokyo and a Grand Canyon level, as well as some of the vehicles that will be available. A number of driving classes will be found in GTHD, including racing and commercial vehicles and even scooters. As the game loaded, Yamauchi pointed out that the included hard drive will dramatically reduce the load times of the game, making selection of a track and the start of a race almost immediate.

Yamauchi also made the comparison between the original title on the PlayStation, GT4 on the PS2 and finally GTHD on the PS3. He also stated that while the Gran Turismo series took about a year and a half to make, Gran Turismo HD should be released rather close to the launch of the system. Yamauchi also stated that the next Gran Turismo game will definitely surpass that of Gran Turismo HD, and that he expects the addition of online play to will make the world of Gran Turismo "not expand, but explode."

Basically this game is GT4 with elements of TT added in and better graphics.

Not GT5, but GT4.5

Currently NOT worth spending $500 (the announced base price for a new PS3) on.

(back to studying for finals)

GT HD was just a demo for E3, the real game coming out in shops will most likely be called GT5. And the graphics will be improved over GT HD.

GT HD is not the final name, and it was just a demo for E3. The real title will most likely be called GT5, and will have improved graphics.

But I have to wait until the 9th to see the conference in HD.

KSaiyu
and GT4 was GT3.5..... :(

I find it funny how people say that, GT4 offered a **** load more cars, tons of new and awesome tracks, better visuals, improved sound, better physics (some will debate but please not here) new features but yet people say its GT3.5 . What else could they do to make it actual GT4? (besides online)

Anyway I'm a little dissapointed very little of new features and no new cars have been shown so far, just high res GT4 with more cars on track. last year we saw next gen visuals with PS3 GT demo which was the RX7 and EVO IX.

I don't think it'll be called GT5 unless they add a lot of new things to the game besides the graphics, "more then 6 cars on track" deal, and TT bikes.

Says who? Of course it's just a demo. Being a demo doesn't mean GTHD wont be the final name.

I saw the conference show, and Yamauchi never said this would, or would not be, a PS3 title.

Where does it say it will or wont be a PS3 title???

Undoubtedly there will be a Polyphony press conference to discuss Gran Turismo and its future on the PS3, and we'll know something definite.

And I have to chuckle at those who say that GT4 is really only GT3.5. "Yeah it has almost five times as many cars and half again as many tracks and 150 more races and better physics and a great new drivercam view. But... it's not really a next Gran Turismo."

Some people. :D

Do you mean there's no confirmation on the title or the fact that it'll be on PS3 instead of just PS2?

What I find utterly amazing about it isn't just the crispness of the graphics and it running at 1920x1080p at 60fps, but the loading times are almost nothing. That demonstration has a TON of content, and I can't catch anything popping up in the background. The PS3 must do a lot of Windows-like caching of data to have a load time of five seconds or less from buttonclick to gameplay.

I hope Sony has the foresight to include a defrag tool for the hard drive. That was really brain dead of Microsoft to leave that off of the XBox. And they're the Windoze company! :D

I wish I could see the demonstration, anyone have a link to downloadable or streaming?

These cars better come with their real hp figures, I'm not going to want to have to drive car with hp levels they could only dream of in real life. At least give us the option of keeping race restrictors in the vehicles.

Another thing, this isn't GT5, if anyone saw the demo of GTV, you remember the Evo 9 and the RX-7 those were totally new builds, and they sported serious poly counts. This GTHD is just as they said GT4 in HD with an a**load of cars on screen at once, that's all. If PS3 launches with that as an appetize and for about 30 bucks, i'd buy it, sorry no worth full price especially with GT5 on the horizon, but might be a great diversion.

The conference is up and running in my sig, number 2. In the conference, Yamauchi said GTHD was a demo specifically for E3. That means it's not a working title at this time, but I bet it could be quite easily.

Click on the number 2 link in my sig. It's up and running.

Yamauchi said it was a demo specifically for 2006 E3. He said at the end for the presentation that the next GT title will have better graphics that what you've just seen. This was only a "passing point." So, that means this title is not going to be released as a game.

Someone with some posting capability has GOT to get hold of one of Polyphony's screenshots of the Grand Canyon rally. A startling line shot in particular.

Hey thanks, when I checked your link earlier it wasn't available now I got to see it. :)

Overall I expected better, especially from PD.

*Yawn* Another port of GT4 to the PS3, just like GT Visions.

...Although the visuals in the Gran Turismo HD demo were certainly a vast improvement over those in Gran Turismo 4, it was quite obvious (not that Sony made any secret of the fact) that the demo made use of reworked assets from last year's game rather than all-new textures...

...The suicidal spectators on the Grand Canyon rally track also gave away the demo's roots, since their low poly models and PlayStation 2 textures appeared to have received very little PS3 love ahead of today's event...

...If you've ever played Gran Turismo 4, you'd feel right at home taking the controls of Gran Turismo HD since nothing has really changed...

And the new controller is great too! Can you imagine accelerating a braking with the new L2 R2 buttons? Looking left or right with the new feature too!!!! (even better if GT5 have 3d cockpits).

Almost forgot, put your PSP next to the TV, connect it to the PS3 and you’ll have a rear view mirror!!!! I’m amazed with this new features!!!

Yep. Some people don't like paying £40 for a game that only boasts more samey cars and better visuals than it's predesessor, while retaining the same crap AI, no online mode and physics that don't understand breaking rear traction under power. But that argument has been done to death, and it's pretty obvious where both of us stand on it.

Instead let's concentrate on GT5, although I doubt there will be anything at E3 that will point to how it is gonna turn out (these look like tech demos to show how amazing GT4 will look on PS3....exciting)

heh i know, but who gives a damn

just good to see so many of you with more info and screens!

personally, i can't wait for the day to fire up GT(HD/5/wtfever) on my ps3 and race online amongst (hopefully) 16 people. Avatars, customizations, rankings, and downloadables would be sickkk and would just be the beginning!

i'm not looking forward to the pay for items/upgrades/levels though. I don't want to spend more $$$ for GT5 stuff.

'nuff said. anymore updates and info greatly appreciated!👍

The way I understand it, this will be an improved GT4 combined with TT, exported on the PS3, and it is supposed to bypass the time until GT5.

It's a very simple equasion in my eyes:
- if you buy a PS3 immediately, you get a Gran Turismo to play
- if you don't but a PS3, you don't miss that much
