Track Guide for Special Stage Route 5

#of Left Turns: 5
# of Right Turns: 9

Turn 1 : Getting this initial turn down is probably the hardest part of the course. You're going at very high speeds at this point and the road not only kinks to the left, but also dices down underground, then turns left in a 180-degree sweeper. The many components of this turn must be executed with precision. There are four things you need to do for this bend. The first thing is drown down in speed toward the end of the straight for the initial kink. If you're in 6th gear, you'll need to brake down to 5th (5th and 4th for the CR-Z). Then turn in to the right, and turn in early -- almost to where you think you'll hit the right wall. Right before entering the tunnel, slam the brakes. While slowing down, down turn -- you have some room before the sweeper starts bending. Right when you downshift to third, let off the gas and start turning in hard to the left. Find the right speed where you can maintain a consistent turn on the inside. You'll be powering out as the tunnel exit comes into view. If you get on the throttle early, you'll be in a bad position for Turn 2.

Turn 2: Immediately after Turn 1 is this moderate right-hander, which requires minimum braking. Blip the brakes before turning in and power out at the very end of the bend. Since you want to be on the right side for the next turn, you don't want to power out and drift to the left.

Turns 3-4: Without much time to position yourself, you'll be cutting into Turn 3. This is a fairly tight left-handed sweeper, and you will need to drop down to 2nd gear. When cutting in, do so from the mid-RPM range at 3rd and let off the gas. As you're turning in, your speed will naturally drop into the 2nd gear range. Since a right-hander follows, don't hit the gas until you've pretty much cleared at least 3/4ths of the turn. .The right-hander itself is very shallow, and you can keep your foot on the gas the entire time.

Turns 5-6: Some of the more enjoyable turns are these two that make a chicane. They're both high speed, and at most you'll just need to take your foot off the gas briefly before cutting in.

Turns 7-8: This area is similar to Turns 5-6, except it also goes downhill and the space between the bends is longer. You'll need to drop down a gear to take this, but don't brake too much. After the initial turn-in, it's a surprisingly quick set of turns and you can keep your foot on the gas nearly the entire time.

Turn 9: This grueling hairpin comes quickly after the last set of bends, so you'll need to be ready. It's very slow, forcing you to drop in the neighborhood of 40mph. For some reason the road gets very wide past the halfway point, but you don't want to use any of that extra real estate; keep the turn tightly wrapped around the inside. This one is followed by a right-handed kink where you can power through.

Turn 10: Turn 10 is a quick right that can be taken too slow. From the outside, blip the brakes, then cut in toward the apex. The moment your nose is pointed at the right direction, power out, even before clipping the apex. The road out of the exit expands to four lanes, so you have lots of space to go wide.

Turn 11-13: You'll be going underground briefly and when you climb back up, you'll encounter a blind left-hander. Although you'll be taking it in 3rd gear, you don't want to carry too much speed here. For one, you won't be able to clip the apex. But more importantly, it'll make the subsequent right- and left-handed turns much harder to execute. The apex for the first left is just atop the crest. From there, cut into the left, modulating the throttle so you can stay on the driving line. Once you hit the apex or the left, quickly brake while going straight, dropping down to 2nd gear. Snap back to the right again to go up a ramp toward the final sweeper.

Turn 14: This final sweeper is vital for maximizing your speed on the home straight. You'll start from the outside, drop down to 3rd gear, and move toward the inside. The apex is 2/3rds of the way through the corner, and at that point you should hit the gas. If it's time perfectly, you'll drift to the outside, just barely missing the wall on your left. This gives you the best exit speed, enabling you to barrel ahead full speed into the finish line.

For next week only, with it being an all night race session, I will be running with Silver Chrome body paint. Let the lights shine!

Alright friends - here are select photos from Season 4, Race 1, Brands Hatch:

Some superb racing here - a fantastic early race duel between Grim and turnupdaheat... check out the amazingly close quarters... steel nerves. And there was an enormous battle for the midpack, with brntguy leading the way. And when time was up, Grim crosses the line in P1.

With the field reversed, it took some remarkable driving skills for Ice_Warden to get to the finish line in P1... it was a close race throughout... Clutch_800 deserves a shoutout for finishing P2 in both races... check out his gorgeous paint job further down in the photos...

Great Job by everyone!

Some excellent stuff there Jazz! Love the 5 shots of Grim and Heat side by side. Kind of personify s the tight clean racing of the series.

Great stuff @AndrewMorrell! Thanks for taking the photos.

As for @turnupdaheat and I, we have raced many times together and I have the utmost respect for his racecraft along with being very comfortable around his car when it gets tight. Those first 8 laps were great especially with @Parcells2 and @JoeW close enough to pounce if we get into it. I was actually upset when he went wide and dipped two wheels in the sand to lose the lead as it was a blast trying to get around him.

All that said, I enjoy racing everyone in the series as we all know that its about the battles not the wins! If there is the occasional contact, we know it was not intentional and are gentlemen about it.

Again thanks for capturing the atmosphere of the racing last night Andrew. These are really great photos!

All I know is your photographer has a ton of time on his hands :)

I know how anal I am about my photos. When I do GT photos I am very particular about finding moments in time, positioning the scene the way I want, getting the right angle, focal point, etc etc. I t takes me a couple hours just to do a couple of 10 minute races the way I want. Much less two 40 minute races.

Of course, this is why I don't do photos very often in GT. I just don't have the free time during my busy seasons.

So be glad he has the time and uses it to make you ugly people look good :)

I'm a simple wedding photographer. Lots of time to live my life.

Wow, I don't ever remember clicking the Like button on so many posts in a row! :)

What a heck of a lap from Turnupdaheat in KOQ, 48.284! Wow
Compare that to the race qualifying results where he still took the pole also.
snapshot10_zps7458a14c.jpg

Thanks brntguy, but I have to be honest, I think Grim made an error on my KOQ time. From memory, I'm pretty sure it was a 48.884 and you have to remember that I had a lot more time to burn off fuel before setting it. Personally, I was more impressed and surprised with the time that I managed to grab pole with as (aside from carrying a heavier fuel load) I lost some time on that lap when I accidentally changed down an extra gear into 1st going into the final turn.

Also, wasn't it brilliant to see all 16 drivers qualify within a little over a second of each other. 👍

Thank you Andrew, for the time and effort you put in to present these excellent pics which really capture the action so well. I'm sure brntguy will be along pretty soon with his race highlights video and it's great that we have such talent in our group keeping such a high quality record of our on-track adventures.

Thank you for your kind words Grim and I can assure you that respect is fully reciprocated. I race using the bumper view so peripheral visibility is basically non existent and I often have rely on instinct when running side by side with someone up to and through turns and there is no one I would trust more in that situation than you.

Unfortunately, you can also be a pain in the a$$! :D Invariably when I see you in my mirror I know the pursuit will be relentless and I did succumb to the pressure by making the error which put me into the dirt and put an end to a fun battle. :dunce:

All in all, great stuff everyone and I'm really looking forward to the next round.

Yes it was a typo - it was 48.824. Sorry about that

Although my glaucoma may hamper my performance at the night race, rest assured that I will have plenty of medication at hand to help see things in a different light!

Oh btw could I get a little feedback on race highlight videos? Like what do people prefer, as in having the hud display up. Personally I like to keep that to a minimum cuz it keeps the screen clearer to view the cars and the racing being shown. Although I do like having everyone on the grid at the start of each race showing the starting order and amount in the field.
Do you enjoy having the background music or is it a distraction? Do you find yourself watching the whole highlight video if it's longer or find that if it's a short highlight reel you will watch till the end?
These highlight reels are basically for us who race in the series and not really a promotional type of thing so I want them to be more of what you all like, enjoy and would be willing to watch.

I like the replays to be like real cameras. No data HUD display. I also like normal rock music without lyrics. The last few songs were kinda ew. Use the some Trembling Hands by Explosions In The Sky.

Music. As long as it rocks. 6 minute reels are probably as long as you want it to be, with 3-4 being the optimum. The driver list at the beginning of races is good but should leave the screen by the first turn. It could return, at various points, for a few seconds as an update type of thing. Not sure how well it would play but having driver names above cars may help with IDing who's who without the driver list being displayed, but will likely add an unrealistic feel to the vid and making some on screen clutter.

Yea, I'd like the driver names above cars so I know who's who. It's slightly less realistic but it's easier to tell who's having a battle so when we talk about it we know who we're talking about.

Sweet I am planning to race that night! Gonna be good and fun.

Yeah. I studied the crap out of that thing and still could only recognize, while racing, a very few, who I was behind or about to get passed by, excepting the few unique colors. I still had to come back after racing and look this up to know who was who where. That just may be me though. CRSS?

Thanks for the feedback fellas appreciate it. What I get from it is most like to have a realistic feel to the highlight reels which is pretty much what I work for too. And I agree the shorter the better. Although that really makes it rough sometimes because there is so much really good racing and battles going on throughout a race, let alone 2 40 min races. This makes choosing which battles with who gets in to the highlight reel pretty gnarly!
I've tried the names above the cars and that certainly takes away from the realistic part but helps in I.D. and keeps the hud off. In crowded shots with alot of cars it really becomes convoluted and really not much help either.
If you don't remember what it looks like the first highlight reel of the series was done this way.

You have a link to that song? Nevermind found it, hmm. Yea upbeat rockin music without lyrics is not easy to find imo. Beside I like trying to use rock music with lyrics that say something and try to match that message in the video footage. Like using Too Close song for the main promo and showing lots of really close racing. But glad DW recommended Glitch Mob stuff, really liked that! Will be looking for more electronic rock as such to use.
