I'm 20, turning 21 on Pi Day.

Also, I won't be racing this Sunday. I think this will be the third or fourth time in a row I haven't raced. I felt I was playing so much I was getting burnt out and slower. That's not long enough to warrant a re-submission of the racecraft test and the time trial is it? If not, I'll see you guys in D4 next Sunday!

Attention Any and All SNAILs who have, or plan to contribute your age and division to the collection

Please click this link and add your info to the bottom line.
If your info is already there and you're not averse to doing so, change your initials to your GTP or PSN ID.

I'll take care of sorting and such as we go.
I updated my username on the sheet, waiting to be placed. Just curious how long that usually takes?

What month is your birthday Tom?

Looking for some D2ish comparison times for the new combos.

Here's what I managed last night while hot lapping:

VW @ SPA 2:18.7xx
Camaro @ Laguna 1:22.6xx

And here's an update on my Lego build! This thing is freakin' awesome!

OK - looks like I probably found a keeper! HUGE shout out to @JoeW for giving me the lead.

1988 Porsche Carrera Targa

Getting inspected Monday am (poss Tuesday), but with MANY photos from the owner, there aren't any 'missing parts' on this one. I will fly to Atlanta Thursday night, and pick this up on Friday. If all goes well, I'll either drive it home or come home via Auto-Train. I *should* be in SNAIL racing on Sunday night next week, but if not, I'm not going to care. Wheee!!!!

Ok, so I am way off with my wheel. I can't do a lap yet without mistakes.
Fallen, two years ago when I finally replaced the controller for the GTDF wheel, it took me almost 2 months to make the same lap times I was doing with the controller. I wasn't in Snail yet but already racing with Tex, Chatva and Greenthumb and they surely remember that. I passed from winning races to dead last and really considered returning the wheel.
But after a while it became the real thing. :)

The trick with a wheel is to not use a controller in the first place hehehe

I first got Gran Turismo 5 as my first Gran Turismo (didn't get into cars until 2010) as a Chanukah gift from my parents. They also got me the Driving Force GT Wheel. Best thing ever. I can't drive with a controller. Just not enough sensitivity with the throttle, brakes, and steering. Try going through a long sweeper with a controller. It's nowhere near as smooth and consistent as with a wheel. Just fact.

Now that I'm really into racing though I'm considering saving up for a serious wheel/pedal combo. I have a decent table stand (see pics in this topic a few pages back) so I wouldn't but a new stand or chair any time soon. I'd really like to have a good working clutch option and maybe an H-shifter, just for added realism if the car has it.

I know you are getting lots of advice about the wheel. One thing I would suggest is spend some time on the nurb in a high powered car with comfort tires. It will help teach throttle control:)

There is no way I am going to Nurb until I can take a low HP car on RS around Spa with no mistakes. I found I can drive the Gazoo Racing Toyota fine but still need basic wheel skills.

ah but that is the key. You have to learn to slow down. Then you can go fast. Try it (i suggest a Ruf RGT) simply drive slowly the first lap at say 80% then speed up a bit each lap. The goal is to stay on track not set a lap time. I would even suggest turning off all the onscreen data and go into the cockpit view. It will make it feel more real and you may find that it really helps. Master the ring and all the other tracks are easy.

Don't suggest a car that's hard to drive even after you get better with a wheel. Give him something basic that we don't have any trouble with, and he will get there in his own time.

The point that Joby is making is that you start with something difficult and slow down. Build up to running fast rather than going balls to the wall out of the gate. It's a solid way to improve your skills. It's also the way it's done in real life when the threat of death keeps you from going full out and beyond your skill set from the beginning. There is nothing in the game to keep you from out racing your skill level except for yourself.

It's easy to find a nice easy car to drive and figure it out but then what do you do when you have to use a car that isn't so easy to drive. You've learned to go fast with one car, but you haven't learned any real skills that will help you with all cars.
