It sure sounds inviting - Have you settled on a night?, or is it still floating around? I'd be back on the Learning Curve for sure - in the Strategy Dept.
Put me down as an definite maybe?

Now as for the date. It looks like tomorrow is the last race of this S.P.E.C. season.

Beal what are the chances we could run this on the 9th maybe in between seasons? Just an idea and if that does not fit with your plans that is fine.

The original post is here and has my original thoughts.

The consensus seems to be keep the cars secret but other than that people seem to like the idea.

Lets try to find a night to do this. Do any of our scheduled events have a break coming up in the next week or so?

We are going to have to start a reserve list soon:)

I was thinking about scheduling. Assuming the PTB for the racing series agree what if this became a go to event between seasons for the events. That way it could run on different nights (Tue, Fri, Sat). This would give the most people the chance to partake. It also means it would not run every week but that might help to keep it fresh.

Any thoughts?

The thing is...the more people join, the more people want to join. Noone wants to race with four people...but 16 is a different story.

Yolo- you only load once

Idk what cat and mouse is but I'm down

If you have not played a Cat & Mouse race before, lemme just explain the simple rules:

Rules:
Make a team (each team consists of 2 or more players)
Each team should have one player representing the teams "mouse" and the other player can be the teams "cat".
The players representing the "cat" car can do whatever means necessary to either slow down other teams or speed up their partner.
Winning team from each race becomes a team of wildcars for the next track. Choosing whatever car they desire.
WildCars sole purpose will be to frustrate whatever mouse is in 1st place.
The team who get their "mouse" to cross the finish line first is the winner.

Cat & Mouse = SNAILers letting their hair down and forgetting the OLR ever existed. Frighteningly, there are teams out there that specialize in this sort of competition and are hatefully good at it. It makes for a nice break from clean racing.

Are you running this?

I love the idea...

My brain is still fuzzy from a malfunctioning electronic report card system. If I have another drop down menu today, it would go poorly for something.

This is on Saturdays? Several times a week? That part has me befuddled. Realistically as we head towards spring, I am not able to commit full time to staying up that late (until midnight plus EST, right?) several nights a week.

I could possibly be an intermittent place holder, substitute on an as-needed, when-available basis. Let me know if this series is a specific time or date, and so on.

Is there any possibility of the draft of drivers into vague teams (Red, Blue, White, etc) like we had discussed across divisions some time ago? As I recall, that was more in the lighthearted fantasy-SNAIL-driving vein.

I blame alcohol for being fuzzy. My thought is that when the series that run need a filler we would just do this for one night instead. So it would really only ever be once a week and then even then not every week.

Now the team idea I like:idea: Adds even more strategy:) If you wanted you could create a team of two. So each night would have an individual winner and a team winner. We would need to make sure the teams are not of say 2 D1 guys vs a team of 2 D5 guys.

Anyone have any naming ideas?

Just throwin' it out there, but what if we had to draft our cars? We could do a snake draft like in fantasy sports. That way, nobody would have an advantage based on how early their first pick was. A draft would also solve the issue of what cars had to be "revealed" before the race. Everyone would see what everyone else drafted, and we could use the 1600 PP limit as a "salary cap" of sorts. The total salary of your four players/cars can't exceed $1600 PP.

I used to play NFL Street on the PS2 way back in the day with my roommate at the time. There was a game mode in which we had to draft our players before the game and I swear the draft process and the strategy involved was more fun that the gameplay itself!

While that idea sounds like fun and would guarantee everyone was in different cars I think it would make things too complicated, eliminate "last minute" drivers and eliminate the excitement, anticipation and fun of revealing your cars at the last minute.

I tend to jump into weekday events just because my wife has gone to bed early or because I begged [well] enough. Having a draft for this would make it impossible for me to do so unless said draft was prepared in the few minutes before the races began.

With joby's original idea I could plan my four cars any time, then just hold onto them until I'm free on one of the nights that we race – even if it's been weeks since I prepared them.

I'd say to leave the draft idea on the table for a one-off event or a "restricted entry" type event.

I echo Apmaddocks sentiment. Having a draft would all but eliminate the guy who found out early in the day that he doesn't have anything else to do so he's going to race. I would be one of those guys and I never know when I'm going to be able to race or not except for Sunday's. Going the other way, if someone showed up to draft but then couldn't race, four cars are just wasted for the week.

If you want to keep variety in the series, I would suggest running the same four tracks for a month but not allowing any driver to use the same model car twice in a month.

I understand where both of you are coming from, but there are plenty of events on the schedule that are "last-minute friendly". Personally, I think there's room for an event that requires a little bit of advanced planning and scheduling. After all, why limit the scope of our imagination to only what's convenient for everyone? For those of us who's schedules are always changing, not being able to participate in everything you want to is unfortunately just one of the negatives of a constantly changing schedule. On the other hand, for those of us that have the luxury of being able to schedule race nights in advance, why not let our minds wonder? Why not think BIG?!

I'm not saying the draft idea is perfect, I just don't think it should be eliminated from consideration simply because not everyone would be able to participate. Like I said, we got races pretty much every night of the week. Let's allow ourselves an opportunity once in a while to get creative and think outside the box (even if not everyone will be able to participate all the time).

I think it'd be cool if we created a Fantasy Racing League - a fusion between a fantasy sports league (aka rotisserie league) and a racing league. We could treat the cars like players, have a draft board and then have a random drawing to see who gets to the coveted #1 pick. From there, we could snake draft the cars so that each team manager could fill their roster as they see fit. Since jobyone's idea required each driver to pick one of each of the four main layouts, we could view these as roster spots on each driver's lineup (kinda like needing to have a shortstop or a running back on each team).

As for the draft itself, I'm thinking all the team managers would meet in the D1 lounge for a draft party! Everyone bring a bag of popcorn and your favorite beverage and get ready for an intense and entertaining battle of wits and strategy. We'd communicate with our mics and chat, but we'd post our picks on the Fantasy Racing League thread. Each team manager would have up to two minutes to make their selection or they lose their place in the snake draft. That would keep things moving along that it wouldn't take more than a couple hours. And when it's not your turn to pick, you can test out cars on the track. Or just drive a car for the purpose making the other team managers think you're about to pick it, just so that they don't know the car you're really after. :dopey:

Anways, sorry if I'm getting carried away. Maybe I just miss playing fantasy football.

Holy smokes man!! This has been one of the most insanely busy weeks at work. I have been trying my best to keep up with all of the thread banter but have missed a few things. Have we settled on a format for Sunday in lieu of official league night? I am going to make every effort to line up no matter what we run but I am on call and with the superbowl it may turn out to be hell day for me. I am trying to be positive and want to have my ducks dressed for Sunday night.

I'm currently in D2 in case anyone turns up to race the 1988-1992 LMP cars at their rightful place tonight...I'll wait until half past before packing up my R89C's hauler ;)
