A red fox + birds soaring + butterflies + cow bells + scenic mountain views + spring flowers + trains = Eiger Nordwand in all its glory. We start the night off with a smaller grid of 7 participants.

I agree with @Dragonwhisky's statement about the Fiat being quite fun to drive here. It's front wheel drivetrain keeps the oversteer to a minimum going down the switchbacks. It has just enough power to make the corner exit momentum at the bottom of the hill very important. Finally, it's short and narrow wheelbase allows for some passing room in a track that's tough to do so.

A bird's eye view of the valley.

1000005649.jpg

I figured I'd throw a map in here with the turn numbers for some reference.

1000005653.jpg

Lap 1: Generally, in Sports mode daily races, turn 1 is a dive-bombed pile of wreckage on the first lap. Not here in SNAIL! We all manage to respect each other's space and have a clean run down the twisty section. I started in 3rd and @TexHill and @racingchamp30 are on either side of me already. We'll have a good battle for the next couple of laps.

1000005654.jpg

@Oshawa-Joe leading the way into the uphill battle out of T7 with @JamCar0ne and the gang right behind. I'll get as many shots of the mountains in as I can while we're here.

1000005656.jpg

@TexHill had a brief encounter with the wall between turns 9 and 10, giving me the opportunity to move up to 3rd place for a little bit. I didn't get a chance to read your bumper sticker until the replay. "If you think this is slow wait 'til we go uphill!" LOL, love it! @racingchamp30 will make a move for P4 at the top of the hill, in turn 11.

1000005657.jpg

Lap 2: I make a run at @JamCar0ne for P2 on the way into turn 1 and end up testing the guard rail for weak spots. @racingchamp30 moves up to P3.

1000005658.jpg

@JamCar0ne creating some distance behind him at the lowest point of the track. Our battle for 3rd continues in the background.

1000005659.jpg

Three wide coming out of turn 7!!! I had a lot of fun racing with you two.

1000005660.jpg

Lap 3: While in position 3, Tex will conduct his own test of the guard rail in T1 and I'll overtake for 3rd. Here's a picture of @cesarr64 zooming across the bridge leaving T5. @racingchamp30 can be seen setting himself up for a pass on Tex up ahead. They'll be engaged in battle 'til the end.

1000005661.jpg

Lap 4: @Ropere finds himself in 6th as he rounds the final turn and enters Lap 5.

1000005662.jpg

Lap 5: @TexHill is driving like a mad man who's behind on his delivery route and climbs the hill quicker than Champ this time around.

1000005669.jpg

@Oshawa-Joe can't be caught and it's no wonder why when he puts down the fastest lap of the race during L5. All sub 1:23's so far, nice pace!

1000005663.jpg

Lap 6: @cesarr64 and @Ropere in a mad dash to the bottom of the esses.

1000005664.jpg

@TexHill and @racingchamp30 racing around T7. Anybody else hear cowbells over in that area?

1000005665.jpg

Cesar gets by just as they enter T11 but it won't stick.

Lap 8: Champ takes 4th in the downhill S-curves then Tex goes 'tit for tat' taking it back on the uphill section.

1000005666.jpg

Lap 9: As the back-and-forth battle continues, Champ passes on the esses again. They're just barely visible back there in this picture of @Oshawa-Joe. The reason you can hear cowbells rounding T7 becomes apparent from this point of view.

1000005667.jpg

Lap 11: @JamCar0ne demonstrating the proper way to drift a front wheel drive car on the turn 7 bridge.

1000005668.jpg

In a fight to the finish, @cesarr64 tries to overtake @Ropere approaching the final turn. Ropere manages to hold his own as they cross the finish line.

1000005651.jpg

The fox is leaving the henhouse, kind of fitting, being Inauguration Day and all . Probably not a henhouse, I don't know, woodshed maybe???

I'll try to have another recap or two up tomorrow, there was plenty of action last night.

Evening…looking for some tips on getting faster. First off, I really enjoy racing on Sunday nights. I’ve missed the sportsmanship driving. The Daily Races are so frustrating. I feel like I get one step forward on DR then two steps back due to inconsiderate drivers.

I just want to be more competitive and have been working on my trail breaking and throttle control. I’m using a Thrustmaster T598 wheel and pedals. Any tips or advice is appreciated!!!

Thanks…
If your schedule allows it, my trick is to do short practice sessions, no more than 10-15 minutes, with each combo but more often during the week instead of longer sessions less often.

By doing that you can see your improvements throughout the week.

Thanks…I do that as well. Combo 3 last night drove totally different then my practice and open practice. Car drove like it was on ice.

Sometimes, it seems like I fall back a step or 2 from practice to race night, OR just overall. Something happens, sometimes, and I feel like I've regressed in a matter of a day or 2.

I keep a notebook tracking my lap times.

Same here on some combos. Combos 1 & 2 were spot on Sunday Night. Just little mistakes made the difference. I just didn’t get comfortable with combo 3. Like I said, felt like I was on skates, weird weight transfers, oversteering, etc…

  2. JamCar0ne --------- voted to eliminate Round 2
  3. Oshawa-Joe -------- voted to eliminate Round 2
  4. RacingChamp30 ----- voted to eliminate Round 2 - Prize B

  6. cesarr64 ---------- voted to eliminate Round 2
  7. RopereSKN --------- voted to eliminate Round 1
  8. arethosetacos ----- voted to eliminate Round 2
The round that received the most elimination votes was:
Round 2 - Volkswagen Golf VII GTI '14 (CS) at Autodrome Lago Maggiore - West Reverse - S18 Afternoon (8 laps)
Therefore, the entire combo has been dropped from next week's line-up. @A_Higher_Place wins Prize A, and gets to choose an entirely new car and track combo to replace it.

The round that received the second most elimination votes was:
Round 1 - Abarth 500 '09 (CS) at Eiger Nordwand Full Course - S01 Afternoon (11 laps)
This means either the car or track will be replaced for next week's line-up. @racingchamp30 is the Prize B winner and they have the option to freeze the car or the track, or they can give that option to the Prize C winner. If they give the freeze away, they get to decide what car or track replaces the part of the combo that is left unfrozen by the Prize C winner.

Prize C goes to @Longball - they get whichever option the Prize B winner does not select.

Preliminary prize winners, please don't announce your prize selection until all incident reports have been filed and it's confirmed you don't have any penalties. Also, it's recommended you review the SNAIL combo history and other data on our car and track history, to see how many times we've raced each car and track. Please remember, originality is always appreciated. Although not required, picking cars and tracks we've never raced is a plus. What's more important is, you thoroughly test any combo you are considering, before making it your official selection. For example, any car you select must not hit its rev limiter at any point during a race (even in the draft).

IMPORTANT: When posting your Prize A or Prize B selection, please list the complete in-game name of the car and/or track you are selecting. For example, if you want to choose the Integra Type R as your car selection, post "Honda Integra Type R (DC2) '98". If you want to select Monza for your track, post "Autodromo Nazionale Monza". Being specific helps us to update the lineup accurately and also helps avoid any confusion among the drivers. Also, please be sure to list the HP and Weight (LBS) of any car you select. For track selections, include the Preset Weather and the Time of the Day (e.g: S01 Afternoon) or else it will be left to default. Available settings can be found under Time/Weather Settings, when creating an online Lobby, after selecting your track.

Car Selection Guidelines
See Section 3 of the SNAIL OLR, Policies and Guidelines.

Track Selection Guidelines

JANUARY 2025 STANDINGS

1737469555860.png

Good morning Snails, I've been quiet recently and pretty busy with a few things in recent weeks. And the NFL has been scheduling my Bills games Sunday nights (which makes my participation this upcoming week doubtful again) but I'm still around monitoring the chat.

@A_Higher_Place - Always happy to see you pop in. Looks like you even earned yourself Prize A this week.

@Villy31 - I'm in no position to offer any technical advice or suggestions on how to get faster. Plenty of folks in this chat to help you with that. But what I can say is that you've found the right group to hone in your racing craft. I'm 1 year (and about 225 races) into my Snail career and I know the DRD_Niagara of today is much faster than the DRD_Niagara of a year ago thanks to Snail.

See you at the Car-Show.

Thanks…I do that as well. Combo 3 last night drove totally different then my practice and open practice. Car drove like it was on ice.
Update on my progress…thanks for all the info and advice. I was able to change a few things today that really helped my driving. First, I added some foam to my t598 brake pedals inside the spring. Makes a big difference with feel and have it set at 5% dead zone in GT7. I swapped out the throttle pedal spring for the extra one that came with the t598 (black spring). I also added 7% dead zone on the throttle settings. Huge difference in feel and performance gain. Wheel spin was more manageable and dropped my Red Bull Daily Race C lap time by over 1 sec. Can’t wait to try it out on our combos.

I appreciate the help…

That was a lot of fun @JamCar0ne , you have a gift for finding these very interesting and fun challenges. Really hope more people join in and participate.

Nice job on the new combo picks @racingchamp30, @A_Higher_Place and @Longball. I'm ready to try them out and looking forward to the flashing lights (might have to borrow a livery for that one).

Also looking forward to racing at Eiger Nordwand again. It's an awesome track in VR!

1000005671.jpg

Lap 1: Just like the mountain tops in the background there's snow in Florida today. Not where I'm at, it's just 40 degrees Fahrenheit and raining, but it's sticking pretty good in the panhandle. Here's the grid rippin' around turn 4 with @cesarr64 leading the way.

1000005672.jpg

Just ahead of me there was a sudden instance of people turning left instead of right on braking. @racingchamp30 and @JamCar0ne were able to correct course but @TexHill wasn't so lucky.

1000005673.jpg

Lap 2: Exiting T2, @racingchamp30 is giving @Ropere a run for his money.

1000005674.jpg

Heading into turn 6 on the bridge, I'm passed by @Oshawa-Joe.

1000005676.jpg

Joe has to slow down going up turn 7 and I'm back in 4th. Further up the hill @JamCar0ne gets by too for 5th and I carry enough speed to be in 3rd around turn 8.

1000005677.jpg

Lap 3: P1 and 2 make contact, @cesarr64 recovers quickly and @racingchamp30 voluntarily pulls off the racing line to make sure concession is made. I steer clear of the incident and wind up as the race leader. @Ropere and @Oshawa-Joe manage to pass for 2nd and 3rd.

1000005678.jpg

@Oshawa-Joe and @Ropere in a race for turn 7. Once Joe's behind me I know I'm in trouble lol.

1000005679.jpg

Lap 4: @Ropere and @cesarr64 had some good battles last race and it's shaping up to happen all over again.

1000005680.jpg

Turns 1, 2 and 3 make a second group shot possible on Lap 4.

1000005681.jpg

A nice smokey burnout from @Ropere.

1000005682.jpg

Lap 6: @racingchamp30 moves up to 4th place in turn 1.

1000005683.jpg

Lap 7: @JamCar0ne and @Ropere in a hill climb competition for P5.

1000005684.jpg

@TexHill has made up a lot of ground and gets ready to make another pass. I keep picturing Jim Carrey making the delivery at the beginning of Ace Ventura - Pet Detective whenever I look at the UPS car.

1000005685.jpg

Lap 8: I'm fighting for my life up here as @Oshawa-Joe patiently waits for any chance to pounce. It looks like we might have made contact here, but I can't remember a single time that happened during the 7 or so laps of immense pressure he maintains. "Keep it together" I tell myself.

1000005686.jpg

Our final group shot of the round. It's hard to see us all but we're there.

1000005687.jpg

Lap 9: @JamCar0ne and @cesarr64 in T3 as they compete for 4th. @Oshawa-Joe takes the lead for a moment but I'm carrying more speed up through turn 8 and hold on to hope a bit longer.

1000005688.jpg

Lap 10: @TexHill is still making moves and will win this battle for 5th.

1000005689.jpg

Lap 11: So close! I just can't hold him back any longer though and Joe takes the lead on the last lap. Knowing his fastest times were a half second faster than mine, I'm just proud to have made it this far. He sets up on the outside of turn 1 and has the inside line for turn 2. Then opens up a gap and crosses the finish line comfortably in first.

This was a fun one! I'm curious to see how the Volvo handles things this weekend. Y'all stay warm up there!

I took a screenshot from one of @Dragonwhisky's posts back when the subject was fresh. Pretty sure this is what we're using now but someone else should probably confirm before anybody takes my word for it.

That's another older version. We now have 108 cars on CM or CS tires.
