Missing out Mr McZachen. Rare wheel variations = better than $uper TH's. To me at least.

What the hell, Jason... j/k

I had to hit Walmart tonight, so picked up couple of hot wheel related items. One was fishing tackle box/case thing for longer/taller cars that wouldn't fit in standard jammer cases. Second item, I've been checking out these new Volkswagen cars by M2? I don't think I've ever seen them do anything but American cars, but the Beetle, which is absolutely beautiful, color's wrong to me. For $5.88-a-pop, it's gotta be perfect, as I've been more picky. They also had older beetle(maybe 50's?), color's cool, but fit & finish was mediocre at best.

At the second Walmart, I found this & it's damn near perfect:

I look forward to re-release of the Beetle with better colors(I'd love beige!). I don't like the blue paint, but otherwise, they are absolutely beautiful!
Damn straight. If only the rest of you guys would be as considerate for those of us who are the right way up. :dopey:
Yeah, you & Ben always flip the pics upside down for us, right?

@R1600Turbo, Probably because $upers get so much publicity it has little "rarity" value now. The idea that it's "hard-to-find" isn't 100% true. Why? Because you can find 'em on eBay all the time. Well, someone found it! No actually, many people have found it. There's 14 people selling the same car. "Hey this car is verryyyyyy hard to find, guys. I hope someone bids on my listing :dopey:"

I agree with your take on variations feeling more special than $upers in that variations are literally made harder to find. A black OH5 variation of what was originally black MC5? Now that is visually harder to spot. To me, finding one feels significantly more rewarding than lucking out with a $uper....only because some grouchy middle-aged man didn't show up to raid the box first.

Or errors. Those are awesome too. There's proof that variations are more awesome than a $TH. Remember that $TH S2000? That was cool, right? They saw enough value to pay for a light dinner. Well, one day that same $TH S2000 came along, except it had those star wheels on it, and people went bat:censored: crazy to get it. Someone wanted it so bad they would give up two to three weeks worth of groceries for it. That's insane, to forfeit a portion of your basic necessities of survival, just because you wanted a dinky toy car had differently-shaped plastic parts.

But to get back to my thoughts, I've only had a change of heart when I feel nothing for a loose $uper Falcon XB. Maybe it was just the shade of yellow I didn't like. What I do know is that when I see a $uper still in its blister, the gratification of owning a "special" version of a mainline is more imminent, and I think that's because it's disguised as a regular mainline (or basic TH) thanks to the card itself.

Yesterday, before I bought that Countach, I passed by again in this store that sells Kyoshos.

Here's what they have so far. I bought the Esprit there recently:

Still haven't bought that Jota.

Or maybe I'll buy another of those UCC Omake Lamborghinis.

But they are rare. I don't know how many hot wheels I've searched thru last 2, 3 years, and I've found ONE Super Treasure Hunt. Ever.

They are super rare, considering.

I like the variety of different cars we collect as a community. Kakashi is the king of Kyosho, and anything similar to their cars. 👍

Edit2: Anybody other than me or Dwight have RLC Texas Drive "Em? Going rate is now over $100!!! :embarrassed:

@Cano do you need a Hot Bird that's black with flames on the front with 7-spoke wheels?

This?

If it's mint and cheapo, then yeah. I want it for some wheel swapity swap as I already have mine. Love that version. How much was it?

Aaaaah dude, that Jarama!

Yes, exactly that. Car is mint, still in the blister. Hell the blister is mint too, not sure you care though. :P

Not important how much I paid, but you can have it for $1. ;)

Based on what you said, you're only considering your own location (plus who's not to say your location gets a lot of $upers except someone just beat you to it?). I'm speaking from the POV of the community worldwide. When you factor in the whole community, you'll begin to notice how many people identify their $upers, while a smaller number share HTF variations they've got.

What I'm trying to bring light to is how it's IMO almost a false belief at this point to think $upers are really as rare, considering there's proof (such as on eBay) how many people have got their hands on them.

I just had a quick browse and not a single individual has listed this PR5 variation Impreza:

Subaru+Impreza+GRB+(white:PR5).jpg

By off chance when there are a short number of specific variations made or its presence not being widespread, these IMO present themselves as a valuable much rarer than the $upers everyone marks high prices for.

Yessssssss, put it in my package. Open it if you have to. One more to the in flames series :D

Nothing about them Matchboxes at the meet?

Dude you really really need to bring pictures of the meet one day. I'm sure I'll find something in all of the stuff to ask you to grab for me.

Andy, I think you are comparing apples & oranges. Scarcity does not necessarily equal premium. Even if the number of Super Treasure Hunt produced are higher than of errors/variations, that does not make them less rare. We all know it's not just my area. They command the $$$ for a reason. Other people can't find them in stores either.

On that M2, I found this pic on the M2 site:

M2_PhotoMaster_2013_VW-MicroBusDeluxe.jpg

Rear hatch actually opens. How did I miss that?

Please M2, do some old JDM next. Please!

Exactly. Don't forget @zakyta_4 too. Us Aussies are such a caring bunch. :D
Dammit, sorry Zakyta.

Dark parking lot with a crappy cell phone camera, not gonna happen. Haven't seen any of the MB you asked for.

I'll bet images show up upside down if you're in the northern hemisphere. If you brought your computer down south, those images would look just fine.

Not less rare on its own, but compared to HTF variation, probably. Most likely. Almost certainly.

Shinji
They command the $$$ for a reason. Other people can't find them in stores either.

To be fair, they are highly sought in the market partially because they're generally hard to find, but also because there's a popularity demand and that, from the way I see it, shouldn't be factored into deciding what is scarce. My original point did not even speak about its premium, it was comparing scarcity between the two as "rare items", so no it ain't apples & oranges in that sense. And again, who's to say there wasn't an employee scalper? Lots of things could've happened.

I'll bet you if more people passed rumours around (it doesn't even have to be true) that there's some really really rare HTF variation, the moment someone finds one, they'll list it, tell everyone about it, those people will tell their friends and now you've got 30 watchers set on finding this one thing. Same idea applies to $uper THs... every now and then you'll come across certain $upers people will label as "VHTF", but then I want to know how in the world they are so sure about that. They probably didn't ask Mattel, nor did Mattel release that sort of information. It's all guessing between other online members of the collector community by reporting back their findings. Hell, for all we know, there's less $TH 599XXs because those who have it don't want to sell it and more of the other ones because no one wants 'em! It could very well be a car made in even lesser numbers, except that sellers who stocked up on it hoping they would find business is stuck with 'em.

By the way guys, I'll take a measure on the tote next week when I have time. I've scrambled up a box of things to give away so you can expect results in soon!

@AOS- Thanks for the info but I couldn't get the hit reply thing to work across multiple pages. Or maybe it just hates me.

That's pretty cool, nice find. I have not seen it around here. I think the price tag on them is a bit steep most of the time, but I'd probably pick that up. Also very cool that the rear hatch opens.

So my Dad calls me at 8:30 and says that he can't make it, so I had to ride my BMX 4 miles in less than 30 minutes to make the K-Days thing on time. Went pretty smoothly, there were enough boxes for everyone to have at least one box. So everyone lined up and picked a box, and then when we were finished going through them they raffled off the remaining 11 boxes. Despite the fact that not a single box had a $uper or Herbie VW Bug in it, everyone went away happy.

What I picked up:

- Red Kool Kombi (for my dad)
- Silver AE86 Corolla (not sure why I bought this )
- Red Nissan Titan
- Mystery Machine (new with 5SP wheels, someone put it on the extras table and I nabbed it)
- Blue Custom Galaxy
- White Mad Manga
- Night Burner (Regular TH)
- Matchbox VW Karmann Ghia (for Canooooo)

Tons of red Subaru WRX's, no PR5 variations. :(

@DwightSchrute12, you're going to need to do some copy & pasting. That or you oughta keep up with the thread!

Woot. No need to buy another Mad Manga, Galaxie, Impreza nor Corolla anymore. Except for the PR5 variation. I'm grabbing that if I ever see it.

Some nice cars there Jason, but no Civic eh?
All us Aussie's are always putting our pictures up upside down for all of you in America, even though you are driving on the wrong side of the road and only carfanatic45 has the decency to put his pics the right way up for us. Thanks for doing that carfanatic45
Wrong side of the road!? We drive on the right side of the road, my friend.

Well, you are right about the demand contributing to the scarcity of the Super Treasure Hunt, obviously. If it's purely about scarcity, while availability online may indicate errors & variants are harder to find, you have to also factor in that number of people who collect the limited edition/chase models versus error/variant are not even comparable. Just like how popularity contribute to scarcity of the Supers, most people are not even looking for errors, which do contribute to those cars not finding its way on to eBay auctions.

If I had to guess, I would wager that error/variants can be more rare than Super Treasure Hunts. Having said that, I still think it's apples to oranges. They are two different types of collectibles in the hobby, and whether there were 10 produced, or 10,000, it all comes down to demand. Now take off,eh? Hoser!

I agree with you on the price tag. I also saw bunch of cool Greenlight & Johnny Lightning at Toys R Us, but GL's are $6 like they always are, JL has now gone up to $5, so I passed on all of them. If they look perfect to me, I'll happily pay $6, but for "kinda cool", I won't spend that much anymore.

On the M2 VW cars, I came across bunch of Beetles, but just one Microbus, so it seems to be harder to find. The newer Beetle they make(looks 60's, or 70's), I hope they re-release with different color soon, because you'd buy that, too. Best Beetle hot wheel car I've ever seen!

Do you have a Gordman's near you? That's where I recently found a ton of GreenLight cars, and they were $3 each.

We drive on the right side of the road, my friend.

Literally. It still doesn't make it the right side though. :P

And looking at those pictures of the M2 Microbus, that thing has some impressive details. Pretty darn cool. 👍

Just gave my nephew his first Real Riders Hot Wheels. '55 Chevy Panel with the opening rear hatch. He was pretty impressed! 👍

We are literally correct? j/k  On the M2, let's hope(maybe wishful thinking) they start venturing outside American models more often!

Couldn't remember if that was on your list, but I took a chance and bought it anyway.:P

Nice. Just remember, it's mostly the really new vintage cars, like from two years hence. If you can grab two of each, all the better 👍

Just the one time a couple weeks ago, the Oregon State crown vic and a couple others.
Nice..... I looked for that at the Toys R Us last night. Oregon State Police Crown Vic would be one of the cars worth $6 to me, for obvious reasons!

Why? You're in japanese Oregon according to your location.
I'm a Japanese citizen, but have lived in Oregon longer than I have in Japan(roughly 13 vs 26). I have Japanese flag to represent my nationality, Oregon is where I actually reside.
