How will you go about attacking this challenge?

Well, if the goal is to go the longest distance then flooring it till it's empty it's the safest way to lose.

I'll probably aim for 60 km/h and low revs.

I think I would use a Prius... better then electric for this, since it would regenerate electric power with the petrol engine, while going on the electric motor.. should get me even further then the Tesla, if all goes right...

But probably we will be forced to do it in a specific car, and for this kind of challenge, I wouldn't be surprised if it was really a Prius or CR-Z..

Take a Prius, you can go 70 km/h only with the electric motor. Drive 70 till the battery is empty. Then stay driving 70 on the combustion engine. Because of the CVT you will only make around 1100 rpm.

Or I'll drive 150 km/h in my C63AMG in "comfort mode" in 7th gear around 2000 revs... :D

Get the power band just right, don't use too high revs, accelerate slowly, if there is a downhill part, ease off throttle, brake only just enough to make it around a corner without scrubbing speed due to understeer/oversteer. Should be fun!

6th Gear under 1,000 Revs.

I tried low revs in 6th in my car.. at certain speeds below 60 mph 5th gear is the most economical.. go figure! thus higher revs compared to 6th gear (obviously)

Really depends on the track. but for the most part keep the revs low as most have said. if it's uphill keep revs low, if downhill Neutral and cruise. dont worry about speed but worry about distance

I would be surprised if you can choose a car. Challenges like this they have always given you the car.
I'm hoping they'll make it available to any car and then give you a leaderboard, but who knows with PD?

I want to take a Prius, drive it flat out, and then see what cars beat it. Top Gear did something similar when they had a Prius, driven flat out, being followed by an M3. The M3 got better economy as it was just cruising...

Just a note if anyone tries to do this with a DS3 (assuming it's the same in GT6), a light touch of the handbrake in a high gear should put the car in 'Neutral' (it will show as a greyed out number rather than 'N') and the car will coast without any engine braking. A quick blip of throttle will put it back in gear again.

I think we're getting onto something... Online ** liter petrol challenge, gives you a track and you still have to complete x number of laps but if you burn through your fuel early you don't finish... That sounds interesting.

Modern engines on neutral use petrol so when going downhill switch to highest gear(least resistance) and let go of the gas. if you do this the engine almost use no petrol and far less compared too neutral

This is correct because idle uses a rich mixture to keep going
