If you are stalling up hill while you try to turn around, you are waiting to long to make your turn. Turn before you drop below 4 mph. And you can't just make a sharp 90 degree turn. Depending on the bank of the track the turn is usually between 90 and 135 degrees.

4mph!?! I can't even get it to go 2mph sometimes! You must be pointing it downhill... yea I'll re-read all the stuff before my next attempt.

I'm in the same boat - measuring my (current) progress by how far up that first hill I am by how much of the rumble strip on the left I'm seeing, ugh.

Of course I jumped right into it from GT Mode just to see what was up and didn't read the whole thread. So I got some reading to do and some more practicing in Arcade Mode, but I *will* post a lap time, don't know if it will be the fastest, but it will be done - oh yes, it will be done...

(FYI - My user name has changed, there was a character limit that I was unaware of when I first registered and didn't notice until 7 or 8 posts into the formus. You gotta admit that UrsaMajorPrime is a bit different in meaning/impact than Ursa_Major_Prim)

What am I Prim and Proper - NoWayJose!

I like your attitude.

You can't slingshot that first hill. It's too steep. You have to pendulum (it's more of a three point turn) steep hills like that. I think thegreatms used to back up to the opposite side of the track than me but on that hill, I back up to the left side of the track. I don't remember exactly where, but somewhere in a previous post I give a pretty good explanation of how to handle that first hill and exactly when to switch from Pendulum to slingshot.

That first hill is steep but short. Wait 'til you get to the long hill after the Karusel. It will see what you are truely made out of.

BTW, in Arcade Mode, are you guys modifying your car before you start. Lowest weight, highest power and softest tires.

And one more thing, slow in fast out doesn't really help much here. :)

Thanks, I am pretty tenacious...

I'm also thinking (don't know if this is somewhere in the thread, but...) of changing my external view to include the whole car so I can see *exactly* where my tires are on the track, and be able to judge more accurately when to turn for the pendulum swing etc...

I certainly can't imagine doing it well in anything other than 3rd person view behind the car...

Mezar5
Absolutely.

Well, ya know, my default view (like most folks probably) is just the standard dashboard only view - like I said, I just charged right in to see how difficult it really was...now I know!

I've had to take a break though as my 11 year old nephew is here for a couple of days - can you imagine how quickly he got bored watching his 36 year old uncle tearing up the track at 4 mph?

OK guys, I just finished.

Not finished a lap of the 'ring or anything, but reading this enitre thread. All 337 posts before me! That's a lot of information, and now that I'm armed with all this know how on how to get these pioneer vehicles around the 'ring, I've come to the conclusion that I won't even attempt it.

I posess the carriage, and after playing for about 20 minutes with it at the ring I failed to get even close to the start finish line.

I  to you guys. You're amazing and I wish you well with your endeavours.

I kind of know how you feel just from reading this thread. Just keep on going, and the end gets closer gradually. We can each have our achievements. You guys can go around the 'ring, and when you're at the end: rejoice. I'll just read about it, and when I'm at the end, I'll rejoice.

Keep it up guys. When people used to say that GT4 was too easy, I used to tell them to do Mission 34 five times in a row, then see if it was too easy. Now I think I'll tell them to get the Wagon or the Carriage around the 'ring, and see if that's too easy.

I agree with what was mentioned earlier, about how you've created your own terms such as "slingshotting", "pendulumming" etc, and when you mention them people know what they are. It's like you've created some sort of secret society...

OK, that's my 2c worth.

Big respect to James2097 for realising that it can be done in the first place. Pioneering and developing those techniques was one of the greatest achievements in GT I have seen, and for those that have followed in James' footsteps and bettered the times, big respect to you too.

:)

Wow, I thought the Le Mans endurance races were long but this is something else, well done. I was thinking of doing the same but decided against it as I have so little patience.

I think I'd rather go around the ring in the Carriage then go back and read all those posts. You should at least get past the first hill. Freewheeling after working your way up a steep hill is a great feeling that is nothing like the freewheeling in the very beginning of the game becasue you didn't earn it. Also, there is the added pressure that if you don't take the turns just right it costs you distance and you how painful that will be when you come to a stop at the next hill.

I have to beleive thegreatms is out there working on it. Assuming he is, I have this feeling he is waiting to post a time that will be very hard to beat.

After going on vacation and being immersed in BF2 for the past 1.5 months I came back to this forum and this thread popped back up. I couldn’t come back without a good time so it took me awhile; here it is:

Motor wagon in arcade; no aid, manual, kph

T1 2'10.600 @60.8kph
T2 13’10 @ 82kph
T3 14’41 @ 30 kph
T4 17’02 @ 66 kph
T5 25’30 @ 5 kph
T6 79’36.590 @ 6kph
T7 147’36 @22kph
T8 151’08.799 @18kph
T9 152’57.560 @37kph
T10 164’28.584 @36kph
T11 170’28.978 @18 kph
177’43.082 DONE!

Under three hours!! :D

I used slingshot a lot more than I had in the past. I even spend about 2 hours practicing it before I went for the run. I think I can still get better with slingshot, and get better choosing where to use what technique. I also found a better way to start each pendulum:
When you back up and get to 0 kph normally I would just floor the gas; now I hit the gas (X) with the tip of my thumb and the e-brake (circle) with the base of my thumb, then very quickly pull off the e-brake. You’re only on e-brake for a split-second. This jumps the revs a bit, maybe 3/4 to redline before they slide down. I think this gets you going a little faster and you get a little higher speed in shorter distance. Each time it’s only like .1 seconds and .5 kph better. But with hundred of pendulums it adds up. I call this slipping the clutch. There is at least 5 minutes left on the track maybe more…

From reading all the posts here are the best times in our 4 main races (I think, if it’s wrong please let me know)

Patent-wagon in arcade: 177'43.082 thegreatMS
Patent-wagon in GT: 413'27.078 Mezar5 (only one to finish)
Motor carriage in arcade: 202'30.354 Mezar5
Motor carriage in GT: 580'55.414 thegreatMS (only one to finish)

P.S. If anybody wants more detailed split times I have them saved in my notes; just let me know.

"Miiiister Annnnnderson, welcome back. Weeee misssed you."

Did you switch the direction of backing up at the end of the long hill after Karusel. I don't know if you read all of the posts but I have been backing to the left side of the track all the way through the S turn at the top of that hill.

Anyway, congratulations and welcome back. I have about 6 ralley races left so I'll probably finish that off before I getting back to this. I haven't even started trying the Motor Carriage in GT Mode but I think you would agree there is time to be had there.

Sig changed appropriately! I would've ranted about each awesome effort (esp Mezar's GTmode wagon effort! thegreatMS under 3 hours!!! WHOOHOO that really kicks bottom), but reached my 500 word limit, because of formatting, not visible text!:(
I didn't want to exclude anyone, as each record is very cool in its own right, and I feel a kind of conclusion to what can really be done further with the Wagon/carriage.

Anyways, awesome effort everyone! I really appreciate how definatively the nurburgring has been defeated! Of course, you guys are more than welcome to whittle down the times even more....

In the meantime, I'm very happy with where we are now, its really been fully played out - more than I had ever expected.

I've been very busy lately (and on GTPlanet far less :(), but I'm thinking of a very cool new thread idea that may pop up one day...

Fully played out? It's just getting interesting. It's gonna come down to minutes, if not seconds at this point.

I compared times. You beat me by 19 minutes from T6 to T7 and 15 minutes overall. I just need to figure out that section of the track.

Yeah, I'm not saying its not interesting anymore, of course its awesome still (esp if you're the dude getting the records!!), I just meant all the obvious BIG achievements have been done... GTMode, arcade mode, wagon, carriage...

Nope, I still switch halfway through that hill. First part I back to the "right" or inside of the ring. Second half (right before it gets really steep) to the "left" or outside of the ring.

When running the wagon in GT did you notice that it coasts faster? I'm getting like 2-3 kph more on each of the hills. I wonder if it’s because of the different tires or the higher weight or both.

I tried the carriage again just to see what it was like, man it sucks. It can't roll up the first hill for ****, no wonder the wagon times are faster. Have fun with the carriage in GT.

I am going to try backing to the left the whole way. Maybe that will give me an edge. Maybe not.

IMO, the Wagon is all around easier. Coasting, but especially slingshotting. I built pinewood derby cars for years when my son was a scout. His cars always did well going to the districts twice and one year we placed fourth in the Districts. You need to be top three in your den to go to the pack finals and then place in the top three in your pack to go to the Districts. My point being that one of the keys to building a fast car was to leave one wheel off the ground. Less friction. I think that is why the Wagon is faster at coasting.

I finished the Ralley races tonight and had some time to start the Carriage in GT Mode. I am at T2 @ 38.07.178. A little over 7 minutes ahead of schedule.

With the Carriage in GT Mode I reached T6 at 174.55.???. I looked at my GT Mode time for the Wagon at T6 and it is within a minute of this.

Under seven hours with the Carriage in GT Mode:

T1 2.37.268
T2 38.07.178
T3 40.47.329
T4 45.27.074
T5 77.57.890
T6 174.55.995
T7 356.44.770
T8 372.38.716
T9 375.09.778
T10 393.42.460
T11 401.13.719
T12 416.12.547

I went from T6 to T12 in one sitting. I think that might be a record too. I can barely even type my hand is so cramped.

WOWOWOW! Kick arse Mezar!! :):):)
For some reason I feel you may be planning to have another go at the Wagon in arcade mode... 💡

Will thegreatMS rise again to challenge your gathering supremacy??

I am going for the Wagon in Arcade Mode next. I think the low lying fruit has been picked off of these runs. I think it is a beatable time but not by any of the margins we have beat each others times to date. I will probably wait to get my mind right before I try. Or, maybe I try tonight. Who knows.

Hee hee! Don't get PlayStation-Thumb* though Mezar!

*According to a doctor mate "PlayStation Thumb" is a recognised medical condition (apparently it is!), specific from regular RSI due to the occurance of quite young people suffering from it severely - contrasting the much older folks who usually suffer from RSI.
It is also specific as a gaming related injury.

Actually James2097, I call it Nintendo Thumb, but that's because I was pretty loyal to Nintendo 'til my son wanted Playstation. I do have less mobility in my right thumb than my left. But, I doubt I am alone in that.

I see one more fruit that is still low lying...I should get it by the weekend.
well it took longer than the weekend, my real car need work. But I did get that low laying fruit.

Here it is:

Wagon in GT

T1 2'11.334 @61kph
T2 17’34.560 @ 80kph (max speed 113 kph)
T3 19’01 @ 31 kph (gave a little gas on hill)
T4 21’21 @ 66 kph (braked too much, early to 50 kph, good turn)
T5 ~40’30 @ 5 kph
T6 147’28 @ 2kph
T7 289’20.428 @21kph
T8 296’00.346 @16 kph mph free wheel through T9
T9 297’59.793 @36kph
T10 320’41.05 @39kph
T11 328’41.077 @18 kph
351’55.763 DONE!

shaved about an hour off the old record :)

As usual I have a bunch more spilts if needed. Also as usual I can easily see another 10-15 minutes left out on the track (i got stuck twice)

not sure if anyone is still doing this but I'm going to keep going...

its back to 2-all mezar5 👍
