ITV qualifying re-run didn't mention anything about the McLaren team's penalty.

Surprised only McLaren got penalised. I am not.

Because it was only the McLaren drivers which infringed upon Heidfeld and Alonso's lap. What a corrupt bunch of weak pillocks.
IIRC they were the only ones swanning about on the racing line. I remember the Ferraris, for example, being off line when Heidfeld and Alonso went past them.

Excellent session, very intense. Trulli put up a truly magnificent show today (as did Glock), while Alonso and Piquet certainly stepped it up a notch.

Too bad about Williams, or the absolute Ferrari dominance so far. :indiff:

No, I'm not surprised either - because they were the most problematic drivers. The two - Kovalainen and Hamilton - were on the racing-line during Heidfeld's and Alonso's laps, causing them to swerve sharply back and forth in order to approach the corner from the right direction. The rest were also nearby, but on the other side of the track, far from the line, and hence only a minor disturbance.

This qualifying showed us a problem with the current format. Without drivers getting their fuel back, this has led to everyone slowly limping around the circuit at the end of their final hotlap, which has resulted in the punishment of the McLaren duo today.
I suppose there's no solution for it, though, apart from bringing back refueling between the sessions (aka, true hotlaps in Q3). Unless drivers had to complete their return in a set time - say, a time equal to 120% the time of their hotlap.

I dont see what the problem is with letting the teams fuel the cars as low as they damn want to get uber laps and then plotting a strategy for the race with as much fuel as they wish. This q3 to race fuel business is rubbish as far as im concerned.

While it does make it quite more interesting strategically, it also kind of disadvantages the drivers who don't have Q3-material cars, but made it up there anyway...

I thought there was about 3/4 cars on the racing line?

Wasn't the best qualifying session the 1 hour long one? Maybe just have one bumper 45 minute session?

Nope, the McLarens were the only one on the line. Three others were on the other side, though, so essentially Heidfeld and Alonso went three-wide through them.

I dunno, but the change to a knockout qualifying session was generally a welcome one... After all, you wouldn't want a Force India standing in the way of your favourite title-challenger in the last minutes. This way, the lower teams have three-four laps to get a shot to battle it out, while the top-teams generally do a single lap or two. Then the midfield gets a chance to duke it out, and then the main contestants get their shot at pole position. I, for one, like it like that. It's the problems around it which are problematic.

just watched the qualifying on tv and the mclarens were pretty obviously in the way. heidfield was doing some zig zagging to get through there.

I'd think Massa is going light because they (he) thinks their is a strong possibility of changing weather early in the race, which may work with a 3 stop.
But its still a lose-lose for Massa. If it rains, his strategy may be best but he is simply a poor driver in the wet. If it doesnt rain, he may be fast enough to win, but his strategy screws him before a single lap as a 3-stop wont win you the race (or even a 2-stop strategy with a very short first stint). His pole was a waste, as even with 5 more laps of fuel in the car, he would have still had pole. Massa wont win the race, and Raikkonen looks like the heavy favorite.

No, the knock-out one we are using now is by far the best. Three exciting rounds at the end of each of the sessions, as well as the elimination of slower cars in later rounds makes it much better. With the current engine penalties, most of the (better) cars would be in the garage for most of a 1-hour session.

Justice has been served. Do your hot lap and get outta the way. Ham obviously knows where the 'line' IS. What a smug pair of kids at VMM. Great job Trulli! Farce India should replace Fisi with Liuzzi,IMO. Massa back to 'true' form, Iceman too. Only the Master could get the R28 into Q3, was nice to see the Spaniard impose his will on such a slow POS. "Give em hell, Nick & Rob!".

Serve them right! FIA should impose the 107% speed rule during qualify to prevent this kind of stuff from happening again.

"The FIA said Hamilton was "travelling at a very slow speed on the racing line", while Kovalainen was also charged with committing the same offence against Alonso."

"McLaren accepted their punishment and said in a statement: "We accept the stewards' decision but would like to add that neither Lewis nor Heikki impaired any of their competitors deliberately."

RD is not the kind of people who will accept punishment easily. So what they are saying is they "accidentally" slow down too much and "accidentally" in the racing line.

I will be watching the race live in NY, and thats from 2:30 to 5am for me! (yeah I have no life)

Who's with me!? lol.

I'm totally watching the race.

And here's the incident's evidence:

Both McLaren in the middle of Heidfeld's way, Hamilton quickly moves apart so (at least) not to disturb Alonso's hotlap, while Kovalainen doesn't. I guess it was just a mistake, but if Lewis realized he was in the middle, why didn't Heikki?

Traffic-effect: You don't see what the other guy sees if he's in your way. Kovalainen had Hamilton in his mirrors. At the same time, the two didn't realize in the first place that anyone was still on a hotlap - so even after Heidfeld passed, Kovalainen probably didn't realize Alonso was zooming up.

I wonder how Kovalainen is fueled compared to Hamilton. It will be interesting to see those two make their way through the field.

Oh yeah, Massa's wife is hot

You know what's crap? This race and Japan is the only one that can be shown at a halfway decent time live in Australia. But instead no, they'd rather show 'Orang-Utan Alert' and 'Beethoven's 4th' when the race is on. And show the race about 7 hours delayed at 10:30pm.

You're lucky you've got Urang-Utan alerts and the race at 10:30pm. We don't get either. Well, I get them off a German channel somewhere in the triple-digit channels. But the race is still in the early hours of a working-day (I think around 9AM?), when half the country is at work, the other at school.

And that's why god gave us VCRs. :P

Having seen the evidence, in which it WAS only the McLaren drivers who infringed upon Heidfeld and Alonso's lap, maybe you want to retract that statement? Or are the FIA a corrupt bunch of weak pillocks because they punished McLaren, whose farts smell of candy and who can do no wrong (except, you know, be the only cars crawling along on the racing line...)?

I don't think so, look at the video again: When Heidfeld passed, Alonso was at least 300m behind him. And most drivers have already stated their mirrors only work at very short distances, ie., during a fight. I really can't imagine Hamilton spotting such a small dot on his mirrors from that distance.

Yes - and as you can see, he only swerved very shortly before Heidfeld arrived. Heikki probably didn't see Alonso either... But just didn't think (or wasn't told) that Alonso is still out there.

No, it's worse: Singapore (I think) and China are also on at a halfway-respectable hour, but they'll delay the broadcast for sure.

They might put Singapore on earlier because of the novelty value of a night race, but I'm not holding my breath,

I'll be taping it because I've got stupid ghey TEN with delayed telecast. But obviously some kids playing with their dog is more more important than the F1's. So much for "home of Sport", worse enough that they let shows run overtime and because I programed the Qualifying I missed the last few minutes.. not happy.

As for the incident. It was the team's fault for not informing LH and HK that there was 2 drivers on their hotlaps. The stewards probably looked at it like this:
If everyone else managed to get off the racing line, why couldn't they? But the rules are rules and McLaren only have themselfs to blame (yes I am a Merc fan btw).

I guess I'll be watching the race Monday morning (thank god it's a public holiday so I can sleep in a bit). Anyone lives in Melbourne area? Wanna throw rocks at the Channel 10 studio.. :)

I'll be watching. I'm really looking forward to this race. After seeing all the problems in Melbourne, without traction control, and such... They should be a bit more comfortable with the cars, and I just love this track. So technical.

I'm rooting for Kimi, but I can't deny Lewis's talent.

;)

IMO, its not the teams fault, at least not entirely. As a top tier race driver in a top tier racing series, they should know better and it is standard procedure not to drive on the racing line when you are on your in lap. You don't NEED a super license to know that.

40mins till pre-race show! w00t! :dopey:

i hope it rains...

Not likely..... maybe a 35-40% chance of rain. The weather looks clear right now, but it could likely rain after the race. So yeah, thats pretty much it........
