2011 Driver Transfer Market

I thought it was whoever scored higher the previous season got the lower number. So wouldn't it be Lewis infront of Jenson and Nico infront of Michael?

Surnames alphabetically ordered of course, like in all other TOP teams BUT Mercedes, and we all know why's that! :D
I don't think that's really proof of anything. Vettel has the higher number because he is World Champion. Alonso has a higher number than Massa because Alonso finished higher, and Ferrari traditionally do that (the only exception was this year, when they wanted to rally around Massa's recovery). Look at Lotus, where Trulli comes before Kovalainen despite K coming before T and Kovalainen (technically) finishing ahead of Trulli in the 2010 WDC standings.

And Schumacher personally asked for the odd number, because he doesn't like even numbers, and Rosberg agreed.

I guess cos he was higher number than Lewis this year? And they wanted to stick with the same sides/colours etc?!

C.

Maybe because yellow T bar matches Hamilton's helmet?

Do driver's really care about being in a certain car so it matches their helmets?

I find it interesting that some teams that apparently had both spots filled now have vacancies. I wonder what they are planning.

No. I'm just saying that there are dozens of potential reasons why Hamilton might be carrying the number 4 instead of the number 3. I've seen all manner of reactions to the entry list across the internet, but one thing that keeps coming up is people demanding to know why Hamilton does not have the number 3 in 2011 despite beating Button in the championship.

As far as I know, there's never been a restriction on the numbers within a team, save the number "1" for the reigning world champion (except for the case of 1974, when the previous year's winning constructor [Lotus] gave it to Ronnie Peterson). I highly doubt Alain Prost was the number 2 driver in 1993, although he'd been "luckier" in car #2 (champion in 1985 and 1989 carrying that number), or he was too superstitious about being #0. I am guessing that the FIA prefers a team keeps the same numbers and drivers with that same number throughout the year, to prevent confusion, although there's an instance or two when a driver left the team temporarily and came back, but lost their car number within the team in the shuffle.

The FIA doesn't decide who gets the numbers except for Number 1, end of story. The FIA list isn't a final list of numbers, for example, just this year Mercedes changed their numbers around.
Most teams give the smaller number to whoever finished highest in the WDC the previous year, and if one driver has only just joined the team, usually they get the larger number. For example, when Raikkonen joined Ferrari, Massa had the red t-bar and lower number, and again this year with Alonso.

Schumcher cared about number 3 this year, and when Barrichello joined Honda, Button voluntarily gave him number 11 as Rubens finds it lucky.

Teams may have said they will keep drivers, but not signed contracts or given "official" confirmation. So not really surprising that Force India still have vacancies. Toro Rosso always appear to leave their confirmations late.

What a surprise... -_- I'll miss Hulkenberg. I doubt he'll go to Force India, Di Resta will take Liuzzi's seat before Hulkenberg does, and that's only if Liuzzi leaves, which is very likely, but I don't think, or want it to happen. If Sutil leaves, Liuzzi's safe, if not, he's in danger.

Hulkenberg's going to take the reserve driver spot at Mercedes for sure. I never thought Williams would ever need to hire a pay driver, the team that used to dominate F1.

They don't swap the 1 & 2 numbers directly with the numbers from his year's winning team/drivers? why don't they do that? then everyone else can keep their number for next year.

They used to do that. It was the way the numbering was run until about 1995. Now, numbers are awarded based on the positions teams finish the WCC in.

I've merged this thread with "Williams DROP Hulkenberg for 2011", since they're largely about the same thing. Sorry if there is any confusing order to the posts.

I think Buemi and Luizzi will be let go. Alguersuari has already hated on whoever would replace Buemi which I think is funny.

Why Buemi? What has he done wrong? He beat Alguersuari in the championship, and I think he should be the one to get that 2nd Red Bull seat before anyone else. Unless Raikkonen decides to come back.

Early in the season, Buemi had the edge over Alguesuari. But from the middle of the season on, it seemed that Alguesuari was the better driver in STR. Alguesuari has also showed steady improvement throughout the season, while Buemi has stayed the same.

Thing is that Alguersauri didn't score since Spain. He didn't really look like he would either.

Actually, he scored in Abu Dhabi. Alguesuari has outpaced his teammate all season. Buemi has only managed to out-finish Alguesuari eight times. And Jaime has had better qualifying than Sebastien. They are both even on number of races with points scored. But Buemi managed two more points throughout the season. To me, it seems like the statistics say that Alguesuari is the more deserving driver between the two.

EDIT: I need to learn how to spell Alguersuari.

Is LADA still sponsoring Lotus-Renault? It's getting funny that we have Lotus, Renault and LADA, all 3 manufacturers decals in one car...

Only if that's how the Russian government choose to support Petrov. They may go through another State-owned company.

Kremlin Motorsport?, lol

I personally would have though that large input by another sponsor (Lotus) would make Petrov's sponsors less neccessary, so they could then replace him, but if he says it's better, then I'm not going to argue!

The way the Reult team worked this year was that Renault only held a 25% shareholding in the company. The rest was owned by Genii. When Lotus Cars bought into the team, they purchased Renault's 25%. They haven't actually bought and extra money - all they've done is supplied the same amount that Renault would have if they had retained that 25% in 2011.

Petrov could go to Virgin Marussia possibly. Virgin still need money and they are now under russian sponsor/ownership.

And now a man who got into the top 3 twice in 107 races is saying Petrov is a terrible driver, I'm almost on the floor it's so funny.
I had a similar reaction. I was thinking "If this were Nigel mansell saying it, that would be cool. But this is Jos Verstappen we're talking about - the man who drove for a different team each year he was in Formula 1".

He won't. Nikolai Fomenko, who owns Marussia, has said that he won't take Petrov until he's confident he can give Petrov a competitive car. Besides, Dany Bahar has said that he would like to see Petrov stick around (because Lotus Cars want to tap into the Russian market), and Gerard Lopez has said Petrov is their first preference for the seat if he can convince them that he can be consistent. They seem to think the key to unlocking his potential is to have him move to somewhere near Enstone (he lives in Valencia, and so has to commute) and get used to an English-speaking environment (English is his second language, and it's not what it could be). If he's willing to do it, they'll be happy to have him back.
