ANother twist in the title race then, Leicester 2-2 WBA, Leicester now three points clear but the teams below have a game in hand, City and Liverpool have two.

Chelsea up to the dizzy heights of eighth after winning 1-2 at Norwich...

"Football League" Cup

The last time a Football League team actually won the League Cup was Manchester United in 1992. No matter how you splice it, Premier League teams aren't members of the Football League; they are above the 72 member English Football League in the overall English pyramid.

What to do? Well, you could prohibit Premier League teams from competing (and take away its place-in-Europe prize) and leave it as a cup competition exactly for the FL teams. Get rid of the Football League Trophy while you're at it, because that is an anachronism left over from the days when the first/second tiers of the FL were "full members" of the FL (see Zenit Data Systems Cup) and third/fourth tiers were "half members" of the FL, and both the Premier League teams and Leagues One and Two teams alleviate some fixture congestion.

Or, you could scrap it all together. The cup was originally introduced to foster midweek football when floodlights became viable for most teams. A lot of analysts talk about player burnout because there're far too many games these days and if you scrapped the whole thing, everyone alleviates some fixture congestion. There's still a cup competition, which will become more prestigious without the League Cup diluting it down and a trophy for lower league teams if you want, and teams will have more time and rest to prepare for any midweek league or European games they might have.

Bah, humbug indeed.

Adam Johnson found guilty of one count of sexual activity with a child and found not guilty of the second count, he will be sentenced in two or three weeks and has been granted bail, judge has warned him to expect a 'significant custodial sentence', this of course also means his is now a registered sex offender, he is appealing the verdict.

I always felt that the League Cup - by virtue of having higher entry standards - should be the more important cup. A Premier League team not playing in Europe has to play six games to lift the trophy, just the same as a Premier League team has to play six games to win the FA Cup. And no champions of it have ever completely blown it off in favour of a richer competition.

The order of importance should be:
1. League Cup (just League teams)
2. FA Cup (Everyone)
3. FA Trophy (Lower League teams)
4. FA Vase (Non-League teams)

(though with the European competitions above that on the same basis).

But for some reason it isn't held in the same regard.

The FA Cup has the history that no other cup in the world has. It deserves to be the one to win.

Yet teams prefer to hang on as long as possible in the Champions League, which is all of about ten minutes old and not even named appropriately. Or, worse, finish 4th in the League just to get the chance of playing in the Champions League. Or blow it off completely for a brand new competition.

So it's not history. It can't be for the higher level of competition - otherwise the League Cup would be the one to win. It can't be for the trophy cabinet - you don't get squat for finishing 4th in the Premier League or going out in the last 32 of the Champions League, but you do get a trophy for winning the League Cup.

Guess it's money then.

Teams are going to get a lot more income, publicity and attention if they get to go and play Barcelona than they do in a tie against Brentford. The prestige of playing in Europe is also a way of enticing big players in.

Yup.

Arsenal, you useless bunch of flogs.
Just that time of the season.

I really hope Man Utd don't scrape fourth and because of that keep LVG next year. Painful to watch us play dreadful against anyone lower half.

He is the Shane Watson of the EPL. One or two ok results at the right time keeps him in the team, much to everybody's long term detriment.

Leicester drawing at West Brom, Spurs not getting anything from West Ham... Arsenal had to win that, especially having taken the lead. It's that time of year for them again...

Looks like the North London derby might determine the fate of the Premier League title this season then...

If this season had happened in China, Thailand or India, we'd be making jokes about corruption and betting scandals.

Hang on, who owns Leicester City again?

Man United win + Swansea win = one very happy MUSC!! :D

Great night for Leicester, and they didn't even play...

Re: The cups, I think that the FA cup will always be held in higher regard because of the fact that anyone in the top 10 tiers of English football can compete in it.

That and 'Magic of the Cup'TM

Villa have a better chance of winning the league than Man U
Impossible for Villa, honestly don't think there will be much difference in points for finishing in top 4 and winning the league come the end of the season.

'Magic of the Cup'TM

That is a really annoying earworm tic but the fact that the FA Cup is open to ten tiers does make it a fantastic competition. Sure, some elements of it might need tweaking but it's a great competition. I still maintain that the League cup should only be open to the three tiers of the FL or scrapped altogether but hey ho...

The last round of games was really bizarre. Doesn't anyone want to win the league? Leicester were the only top 4 team to pick up even a single point.

You should follow the Johnston's Paint trophy.

You should follow the Johnston's Paint trophy.

I already mentioned that above; merge it with the League Cup so the top flight Football League teams are involved too. Fixture congestion solved.

Funnily enough, some of the best games I've ever been to were LDV Vans Trophy games.

Going to post this weekend's games a bit later, I cant do it tomorrow as I'm in work most of the day

Imagine Pep Guardiola taking charge of Man City when they missed out on a Champions League place and qualify for the Europa League instead!, Could happen as City have lost the last three in the league and look gone...
