That is pretty cool. 3160 dry weight. The new one should be able to go under that. That would make it a nimble sportscar. :D

If Ford can get the weight of the new car down to around 3400 lbs, and keep current power levels around the same, it's going to be a hell of a performer. It never needed the guts to take down the Camaro and Challenger until they started blasting off 500+ BHP on a regular basis.

Considering that AutoBlog proposes the following:

  • Replaces the GT500 as the top-dog model
  • Replaces the current GT V8 model
  • Comes in as the "special" model above the GT, below the GT500 replacement (likely to be renamed SVT Cobra)

Out of all of those, I get the feeling the last seems like the obvious track for Ford. Dropping the Shelby name on the Cobra is long overdue, I'm more than okay with that. Dropping the GT model in favor of Mach 1 just seems silly, ditching nearly 30 years of marketing is a good way to shoot yourself in the foot.

I think the bigger question has to be, will Ford make the Mach 1 a balls-to-the-wall Z/28 or ZL1 competitor? Or will it be a slightly more hard-edged, but still civilized, 1LE competitor? Or... At least in the way I'd do it... A gentlemans performance car? In that sense, a fancy-pantsy Mustang with a bit more power, greatly improved interior (leather, leather everywhere!), fancy magnetic suspension, fancy variable exhaust, and so on and so on... More or less, sold in America as the Mach 1, sold in Europe as a Vingale?

I disagree. The Mach 1 name is HUGE in the Mustang world.

I agree anyways there is a precedent for this Ford Dropped the GT name for MACH1 in '69. Plus the last Mach1s '03/'04 were a great car and Mustang fans remember them well.

I agree with this 100% being a Late model Mustang fan and SVT Cobra Owner this is long over due. I don't really care for the Shelby name being on the GT500 when SVT did all the work on it. That car should have been a SVT Cobra since '07.

That doesn't entirely matter, any marketing person can tell you that. What is important is that, for the majority of the Mustang's existence, the brand of "Mustang GT" is associated with a premium, performance version of the standard pony car. That's where marketing dollars are... Not with older baby boomers who want to relive their teenage years (ie, why Ford cashed in on that two generations ago), but for the general public who might be interested in buying a V8 Mustang. It would be sheer idiocy for Ford to throw that out the window by replacing the GT with Mach 1.

But, a premium model (again) like they did? Sure, it'll sell just fine. Just the same as the Bullitt, BOSS 302, California Special, and so on. That's the only reason why I can't see Ford replacing their mainstream branding with something like this.

The Mach 1 name is just as big as the GT. Theres simply no arguing against that. It may not have been around quite as long but its a very well known name. The Mach 1 was a replacement for the GT. plus Mach 1 sounds cooler.

Would I be insane to suggest that they use the name "Mach II"?

We knew about the next Mustang all along!

Will the Mach 1 be a different kind of model, or a performance package?

Or is there no info about that yet?

I'm hoping it will be the 'replacement' for the Boss 302 from last generation. Small cubes and high RPMs. 500hp and 8,000rpm n/a from the 5 liter? Please Ford, please.

Cobra?

The normal GT is expected to churn out 450, so 50 more isn't asking a lot.

As far as we knew the new performance model will likely be another SVT based product, losing the Shelby name. Ford confirmed the Cobra Jet will also carry over into the new lineup. Hopefully the SVT Cobra or Mach 1 will return.

Also, in regards to the Mach 1 vs GT thing, why can't the both co-exist? Hell, they did it 2 generations ago.

No, not Cobra.

GT < Mach 1 < Cobra

I think the Cobra, as an SVT product, will remain supercharged, maybe even turbocharged. The Mach 1 can provide the high output n/a engine like the Boss 302 recently did.

That's kind of what I was thinking for the most part.

Hmm the 10R trans....

As someone that makes 6R trans at my job who's been hearing rumours of a 10speed this seems pretty legit.

I think I made a thread about that. GM and Ford came together to develop apparently fuel saving transmission or something like that. IIRC, it was supposed to debut in the Mustang.

What were you guys expecting? It looks just like the renders and spy shots.

I don't see how it looks way too retro...

I mean compared to the original retro mustang, it's night and day and compared to the current years model ques it is a step forward but not a giant leap or complete bottom up redesign. Not sure why it needs to be.
