But Mustang has never been a V8 only car? Or are you saying go upmarket with the Mustang V8 and get a related I4/V6 car to cover the lower end of the market?

Yes, go upmarket with the Mustang V8 but it would have a base, GT and ect models and then have a different looking car with a different name for the I4/V6. It would not cost they that much to make, other then the body and engines, all the underpinning will be the same.

If Ford wants to make a sports car to be sold worldwide they should but don't call it a Mustang. The two cars could share the same platform but make them look different. Make the sports car with the Turbo 4 / V6 and then make the Mustang muscle car with the V8.

Not calling it a Mustang would seem odd since it would clearly be one, but a sub-name would make sense. I could easily see Ford marketing it in Europe as the Vingale Coupé, or something along that line. Hell, they could even drag out the ol' Capri badge. But, here in America, that's significantly more difficult. The Mustang nameplate carries a lot of value, regardless of what engine is under the hood. But, the stigma still remains: A Mustang without a V8 "isn't a Mustang" (SVO apparently now accepted as otherwise).

I think if Ford made a concious effort to remove the Mustang badging (mostly the ponies) from the non V6 and V8 models to separate it from those, and give it a slightly different front end (ala the SVO), that would be enough.

The gills have been represented a lot recently.

Inside the housing, unlit:

That went away in 2010 where they did an odd cross between the 1969 and 1970 Mustang headlights, then in 2013 where they went for the 1970 look. Now we're back to the original gills and they look pretty neat lit up.

Also, in browsing for headlight pics I found a 2015 render that I've never seen before. It's a little different in some aspects, mostly the front end, but I have to admit it looks pretty cool.

In some ways I actually like it more than what we got.

EDIT:

It's a future prospect from Car and Driver magazine. I don't even need to see the cover because they've been doing those for years in that same format.

Interesting it would solve the issue of Ford not having a higher end "halo" car since the top mustang is always held back by its base model roots. Shame Mercury is dead cougar would be a great name to put on the entry level car. The only problem is Mustangs appeal its varied trim levels. The young folks can own a base model that shares the name and legacy while the car guys can get the V8s that make the headlines.

I think I want one.
Oh boy.

You would be the guy to actually get it too.

Do it.

But wait for the GT500 lol

Anyways, now thy the at has been out for 24 hours, I noticed a lot of the hate has turned into very positive views an a lot of people now like it. Funny how time does that.

Time, and the fact that so many people have pre-determined ideas of what they wanted it to look like and aren't prepared to accept anything different, before realising that actually Ford has done a pretty good job of it and that they were massively overreacting.

Exactly the same happened with the C7 Corvette - lots of fuss, and then everyone thought "actually... that's not bad at all". And all but the stubbornest of people have come around to the Bangle-era BMWs as well, which were once widely despised.

I think all the analysis by different websites has helped. It's allowed people to point out why it's a good design, rather than just saying "HERE'S A CAR: LIKE IT".

Change isnt something alot of people can accept immediately. Im the same although I never hated this design but I was certainly on the fence from the get-go up. The studio shots suck of it IMO, that picure I posted is the best ive seen yet. Sounds like what people are saying about it looking good in the flesh rings true. Id like to see a triple yellow one though...

And GT500? Id love too but if the 2013 GT500(and ZL1 for that matter) are anything to go by theyll be too rich for my blood with their $25k markup.

Ford is just returning the favor. :sly:

I've had time to let the new Mustang sink in. And just like the C7 Corvette, some people hate it, I LOVE it.

I really enjoy how aggressive the front end looks, while at the same time also offering this more upscale, high-end profile kind of look.

As far as having a 4-cylinder version, well that's just going to put the Mustang in more people's hands. While it isn't any GT or GT500, it'll still appeal to those who want a cool looking ride.

The only thing I'm not a big fan of is the organization of the taillights, which honestly looked much better flat, and the interior, which looks relatively boring. It reminds me A LOT of the 2007 Ford Mustang Giugiaro concept.

Also reminds me some of the Bumblebee Camaro concept from Transformers 4. I like it a lot though. Hoping we'll see it as GT6 DLC, and I can't wait to see Shelby, Hennessey, and hopefully Saleen do crazy stuff with this.

Looks sexy in this picture

It looks like a very pissed off Fusion in this shot. Which is good, the Fusion is one of the better looking cars recently.

I really, really like how it looks, I can't wait to see them on the road.

I know that Ford would never not call it a Mustang but the way I see it is like what Dodge did with the Charger, make a sedan with some old muscle car style and give it the Charger nameplate just to help it sell better. That what I feel they are trying to do with the new Mustang. Ford just has to stop trying to make the Mustang their everything fighter.

I think if Ford made a concious effort to remove the Mustang badging (mostly the ponies) from the non V6 and V8 models to separate it from those, and give it a slightly different front end (ala the SVO), that would be enough.
That would work 👍

Exactly! I just tired of Ford trying to make the Mustang their everything fighter, they want it to go against the from 86/FRS/BRZ till the Corvette ZR1.

Lowered, using a DBS as a base.

Worth noting of course that the Celica was inspired by the Mustang in the first place...

Someone told me Ford sued them over that car since it was too similar, way back when.

Wonder how much truth there is to that.

That widebody rear lends itself nicely to the tailights.

How long is it in relation to the current car? That roof line gives it sort of an Aston-inspired body.

Im not sure, I grabbed that picture off Autoblog. The cockpit being moved back certainly makes it seem long.

The same as the current one ....
Fundamentally, the new Mustang's major dimensions are very similar to those of the outgoing car. Its
wheelbase is an identical 107.1 inches, its front track measurement is carried over and at 188.3 inches the overall length is essentially unchanged. The new car then goes its own way, sitting 1.4 inches lower and 1.5 inches wider. Compared to today's GT, front track increases by almost an inch, while the rear track expands by nearly 3 inches.

So, as I've been blathering on for two days now, I'm of the mindset that Ford shouldn't lean too heavily on the Mustang name for the 2.3T model. I've been trying to think of different things to call it, Vingale Coupé for Europe, maybe the SVO for America, and then it hit me:

What's the likelihood that Ford uses the ST badge on this one?

It's a badge that isn't necessarily burdened with history here in the US, and overall, has meant a good bit more for modern performance Fords in the past two decades. Ford has already knocked it out of the park with the Focus ST and the Fiesta ST, both using unconventional powertrains (for America, anyway) to really up the ante when it comes to the sporting credentials. More or less, Ford has the ability to build a franchise with that nameplate. Affordable, fun-to-drive, good on gas, built for and targeted directory toward the younglings.

I'd like them to call it the Ford ST Coupe here in the US, but I suppose the Ford Mustang ST is more than acceptable as well.

What do you guys think?

ST seems pretty reasonable since people our age know what that means an associates it with sportiness. The Focus ST is already bought by 25-35 year old guys with good jobs, so I don't see why they wouldn't want to continue to cash in on that market.

If the 4-pot Ecoboost really is the sort of price they're claiming it is for AU, I'd certainly be very tempted to buy one over a BRZ.

Especially if it looks like that.

I LOVE the front but i think its going to take some time getting used to the rear. In some angle, the rear looks nice and perfect but in other angle, it doesnt look like it match the whole car lol.
