I actually like having less gears sometimes. The pickup only has 3, and it's perfect.

Just curious, how is that a good thing? I can't think of any advantages to only having a three speed tranny in a vehicle that is meant to be used and worked.

It's strong, it's made to be worked hard, means less shifting for me, can ride out gears longer etc.

Most people probably wouldn't agree, but I like it. 4-5 gears is fine for a sports car, at least for me.

Being in the power band longer is overrated :P

You can shift my automatic manually on the column and when you floor it it shifts when peak power stops being made :D

I've never known many cars that had very tall gear. Most, if not all V8 cars back in the day were extremely short. The smaller engine cars got the highway gears. This started to change into the late 80s early 90s though.
It mostly applies to cars that actually had five or more gears.

What's with the shooting brake sensationalism in recent times?

Aston Martin Rapide shooting brake, Mercedes SL shooting brake, Scion FR-S shooting brake, F-Type shooting brake, Corvette Stingray shooting brake, and now Mustang shooting brake?

What's next, Bugatti Veyron shooting brake?

People are bored so they go on Photoshop and make cars into hatchbacks AKA shooting brake.

hatchbacks AKA shooting brake.

A hatchback is not necessarily a shooting brake, and vice versa.

These are shooting brakes:

But no rear "door" that opens upward. So not hatchbacks.

Anyway, I just feel that the body style doesn't really fit some kinds of cars, even though the Mustang one doesn't look too bad.

Am I the only one here who doesn't know what the hell a shooting brake is? That sounds stupid.

Hatchbacks, "shooting brakes" and "estate cars" are all slightly different. Estate/shooting brake are often interchangeably used though so the definition's quite tough nowadays - the difference used to be that a shooting brake opened at the top half (like a hatchback but without the longtitudinal depth) whereas an estate car opened the rear fully.

A hatchback is more sloped in a coupe style. At least that's how it is in Britain... mostly... :)

EDIT: I should add that British fans of Japanese cars refer to estates as "wagons", they're not to be confused with trucks... which aren't pick-ups. Hope that helps ;)

This one is definitely the best. Why? Because it's modern. It doesn't look like something an unemployed union worker would build with his early retirement buy-out. Living in Dayton, damn if I don't see enough of that garbage around. Please Ford, please do everything you can to shed the Mustang's redneck burnout image. Make it look like an actual M3 competitor.

It comes from a old horse term for a cart used to having hunting parties where you would carry all the shooting gear and any caught game in it. I love shooting brakes and would love if Ford made a Mustang one. It would fit my need for more space and cargo capacity with not wanting a large boring car. Once ford got rid of the Fox body hatch mustangs haven't been that practical.

Making everything a wagon doesn't make it better. Volvo 740 Turbo? Yes. Mustang? HELL NO.

It's fairly clear, however, that people do want something like this. So, my question to the FoMoCo superiors would be, why not?

It doesn't have to be a Mustang shooting brake, but why not something based on the Mustang? For god's sake, Lincoln is out there floundering, and people are absolutely gushing about that new Volvo shooting brake concept. Do it a Lincoln, base it on the Mustang chassis, make it practical, and offer it with rear-wheel-drive. Put in the 2.3L EcoBoost as standard, offer the V8 as an option to those hedonists out there.

What's Lincoln got to lose? An eventual shutdown? It's 80% of the way there. May as well do something memorable beforehand...

^Actually, that would be a good idea. Ford could make a shooting brake based off of the Mustang and sell it as a lincoln.
I would love to see that.

As long as it doesn't have the Mustang name people will be happy. Seriously, that's how it is. A modern Mustnag wagon will make people have a fit.

Now, if it wasn't a Mustang, it would be pretty cool to see in the Ford lineup with the I4 and V6 engine's provided they could keep the weight down and add in AWD. It might sell, it might not. But Ford hasn't produced a wagon styled vehicle in a while (I think the Taurus was the last one back in the early 2000's), let alone a sports car like one.

Well, they don't really have room for it in the Ford lineup, anyway. As much as I'd like to see a Taurus Estate, it isn't exactly feasible when they'd have the low hanging Explorers presumably around the same price. Over at Lincoln, it would have much more room to be a wide variety of things. Given how many wagons on sale these days are sold by premium brands, Lincoln could more easily capitalize on that by offering upgraded materials and performance. But, it still ignores the fact that a lot of "average" drivers want a wagon, too.

All of which reminds me, GM wants a family wagon again for Chevrolet. It's prime time for Ford to beat them to the punch.

Lincoln would be the obvious choice. I was just speaking for FoMoCo as a whole, since Lincoln is part of it. It could go anywhere really.

Lincoln Shooting Brake?

As in, a sexier alternative to the CTS-V Coupe?

Enthusiasts would have a fit. A foaming mad, squirming on the floor, paroxysm of joy the likes of which you don't see outside a religious revival meeting in that big tent outside of town...
