2015 Formula 1 Russian Grand Prix

By being "too old for this".

Felipe, baby! You're not too old, keep cool, keep cool!

Back to back for Rosberg, not bad at all. Looked like last few minutes the track temps dropped enough to get the supersofts just falling out of the operating window.

Well, that was anti-climactic - Hamilton made an unforced error on his final flying lap, and pitted rather than complete it. Mind you, he was only matching Rosberg's pace at the time, and Rosberg was down on his best lap at that point.

Judging by last year the best place to start might be P2, Rosberg and Hamilton had similar starts but Rosberg got a huge tow off him. Rosberg locked up massively of course but he had a clear chance to make a pass.

And the conspiracy suggests that the race organisers kept that someone from attending to Senna until he was away from the circuit.

Hadn't seen that one. Sid Watkins was the man any way, other doctors are there to satisfy the local license (nowadays), back then if there was a doctor in addition to Dr. Watkins they were the cheapest locum.

Today's quali; good. Rosberg actually seems settled, if still a bit of a smart-arse.

Apart from one moment on Rosberg's pole lap, the car looked like it was on rails. Really impressive the level of grip and commitment into the corners. 👍

The stewards might need to reassess the position of the re-entry bollard at Turn 3. Artem Markelov just clipped the outside wall while trying to negotiate it, causing a three-car accident. While it's true that he (and several others) ignored the white line marking the re-entry lane, the gap between the wall and the bollard is incredibly narrow. I get that the FIA want to stop drivers from cutting the corner and so force them to slow down, but at the same time, if you have an opening-lap mêlée - case in point, the GP2 feature race - you can't have drivers re-entering the circuit at a markedly different speed when others are locked in wheel-to-wheel combat. The gap needs to be wider.

Indeed, and i think it would be hard to blame Markelov at all here. (all drivers seem to have to cope with that white line in a time so short that it has more to do with reflex than thinking ; one of them even ignored it)

Holy crap, how fast was he going after he hit the concrete barrier?l and then the tec-pro?

Sainz has now been released from hospital. It remains to be seen whether or not he's deemed fit-to-race for tomorrow, the stewards have given their permission but, naturally, the final decision will come from the medical authorities.

A shot of the armco on the other side of the tec-pro:

Damn! No armco and he would have ended up in the Olympic Stadium or the black sea.

Quite an odd looking track. So many parts have just empty car parks and no fans or people. With the different buildings dotted around, the whole place reminds me of National Lampoon's Vacation.

I thought in the last race Lewis would pass Nico at the start and think this will happen again.

Well, it is located in a park or more like a parking lot/car park :sly:.It reminds me a lot of the Indycar Houston track, but a thousand times nicer.

The entire Olympic Precinct is actually built on a mezzanine that is elevated above the surrounding landscape, so it's difficult to add facilities. However, I do believe the plan is to gradually add more and more grandstands as the event takes off. It's a common - and when you think about it, clever - tactic among new races: they know that it will take time for the event to get established, so they limit the number of seats. That way, they don't have to suffer the same fate as Shanghai and put up with long, sweeping shots of empty grandstands. Many of these new events also know that the primary audience watches the broadcast, rather than attend the race.

See that was my worry with this track after last year. You know it was lively last year because of the Winter Olympics but now what...other than what little regional events buy time to use the area it's just a desolate expensive show piece. One that they will forever race around until one of many factors happens to where they stop doing so.

A good racing decision but one that's surprising from a medical point of view...

Why? He was found uninjured and stayed in the hospital overnight as precautions most hospitals have most days and was cleared to be released. As well as checked by the FIA

It appears that they're trying to build it up as a favoured vacation spot. The Black Sea resorts in Romania and Bulgaria are especially popular with the emerging middle class, but Russia doesn't really have anything. The only city of any significant size is Rostov-on-Don, and that's really an industrial city because it's the only Russian port on the Black Sea. But Sochi has always been a favourite with the Russian elite, and there seems to be a conscious attempt at reviving it.

True, but if if the G-light was activated I thought there was an established precedent that a driver shouldn't race. I'd read that the light did activate but I guess that can't have been the case in reality.

Good to see him fighting fit after a crash like that though, F1's come a looooong way :)
