Motorsport has leaked it will be a segment based format, confirming my earlier post in this thread.

Don't you write for motorsport.com? Where is GTPorsche being all source snobby and clowning motorsport.com for being a worthless rag of a site?

Done. That's it. Out. **** this. They killed it. Its dead. I'M FED UP WITH THIS ****ING CIRCUS! Thanks a lot Bill France for RUINING TOP TIER STOCKCAR RACING, HOPE YOU'RE HAPPY YOU USELESS *******. I cannot stand this garbage anymore. The chase was one thing, but this, this takes it to a whole new level of stupid. I'll spend my time watching 2003 races instead of dealing with this complete sham that makes RALLY CROSS (no offense) look like Formula 1.

A moment of silence for poor France Sr....whose foaming at the mouth and raging in his grave right now at what these tools are doing to the series he created.

"The son and daughter of Bill Jr., I don’t know them. I’ve heard the daughter is sharp, and the son is an asshole. Sure nothing ’bout them for me not to like (I don’t know them). My boy Sam went to high school with Brian and he seconded his asshole rating. (This has been confirmed by some press members that I know pretty good.)" - Smokey Yunick

Y'know, just yesterday I was talking with someone about Indycar. We both agreed that they would need NASCAR to do something really stupid and create a lot of disgruntled fans that they could lure away to generate more interest in the series.

And now look what happens.

10 to 1 says the decision was made because "them there Millennials have short attention spans and they won't sit still for a full race".

I wrote a few articles for them a couple of years ago but I'm not working for them now.
Generally they are right about NASCAR news. Lee Spencer right about 80% of the time.

While its annoying, I'm not exactly ready to spam caps lock and ragequit just yet. I'm not expecting it to work all that great, but I am gonna at least see what it looks like before I fully decide.

Supercars changes formats for races every year and it's still fine.

Not exactly sure what works for one series necessarily works for another.

The reality of the situation is that with the Chase the way it is, this isn't going to be a huge change overall. You win two races and you're in, as long as you don't completely suck in the other 24 races. Win a race in a Chase round and you're in the next. Points are overrated.

So at most, its not exactly a wholesale change.

Only one way to find out. :)

I'm just going to wait and see what the changes are on Monday before going full SNAFU.

If they allocate points at the end of a segment, without stopping the race: Cool.

If they do stop the race: Eh, it may even take longer than normal.

I ain't shooting myself in the foot until I am most decidedly dead.

According to Jim Utter, this is what to expect:

  • Teams will know before the season begins how each race will be divided, which will be based on race and track length.

  • At the end of each segment during the races, bonus points will be awarded for those drivers running in the Top 10.

  • During the segment breaks, there will be coordination between NASCAR and the TV networks to ensure as little on-track action (including pit stops) will be missed as possible.

  • At the end of the race, the normal points will be awarded to the finishing order of the race as they have been.

  • A driver’s total for the event will include the normal race finish points plus any top-10 running bonus points collected in the segments.

  • The 10-race Chase for the championship will be conducted in most part as it has, but there is expected to be an opportunity for drivers to earn bonus points during the Chase.

So it may be possibly that not-yet Leadfoot may actually become literal leadfoot.

Some of the elders amongst us may be able to right me if wrong, but some of this sounds like how the first season of the Truck Series ran. It also sounds like races will take longer, and 50%+ of the race between start and end of segments will be commercials, and that I'd be better off telling my dad and grandfather "🤬 if I know" when they ask me about points.

It seems not even NASCAR's most popular driver calling them out on how forced it seems wasn't enough to stop them.

Well, there's the article if anyone missed it somehow. It also says that the drivers' council was heavily involved, so I'm expecting the format is going to be tinkered with as the season goes on, much to the confusion and annoyance of people watching.

So my question is, if every race follows the All-Star format now, what are they going to do the make the All-Star race even vaguely relevant unique? Just reversing the field after every segment isn't going to be enough.

"Turn 'em around, boys! We makin' right turns tonight!"
