Jamie McMurray's left rear tire decided it didn't want to hold air any more and blew out during final practice. McMurray slid sideways and the car started to lift a little, then he got t-boned by Newman, and over he went.

In response to this incident, NASCAR is making an adjustment to the restricted plates in an attempt to slow the cars. Cars were averaging 203 mph laps.

FYI guys...
On this day (April 29th) in 1951, Ralph Dale Earnhardt was born in Kannapolis NC. He would have turned 67yrs old today. And we probably wouldn't be listening to Darrel Waltrip's senile ravings on NASCAR on Fox...

Super cool seeing Byron lead some laps. Shame he wrecked. And Chase Elliott almost got his first win, but there weren't enough cars to create any major runs at the end. It was a good race I thought. I enjoyed it.

...And Chase Elliott almost got his first win...

Feel like I've heard that before...

Pretty tame race. Everybody's bumper to bumper for most of it, then when it matters, nobody can get together to make a run at the leader.

Istill find plate racing to be some of the worst racing on the calendar. Officially a part of the "more short tracks" movement.

Well so much for partying like its 181999

That might be why he's in this mess in the first place.

Hipe it turns out to be something simple like what happened with Dinger, but even then, that caused him to losd his ride at Penske and end up with a midfield team, at best.

We don't need another Mayfield.

The Dinner with Racers podcast interviewed Jeremy Mayfield and IMO there was much, much more going on with his suspension than what NASCAR reported.

Finally, someone else not still drinking the Kool-Aid NASCAR and press has fed people for years.

Even before knowing all this, I always found that fact that they took so long with it in comparison to everyone else (Fike, Dinger, etc) completely suspicious.

I saw an article on Flipboard regarding NASCAR as a dying sport. I read stuff about tracks removing thousands of seats because of poor attendance. Maybe even those still not sold on today's NASCAR landscape with the stage format and such. My main storyline this season I wanted to follow was the long-term future of NASCAR. Going by what I read earlier this morning, NASCAR will have some work to do to try to alleviate these woes.

Elsewhere...

* As for the Spencer Gallagher news, it's a sad deal. "Yeah! First win!" ...then you get hit with substance abuse. Tough.

* Congratulations to Dale Earnhardt Jr. on becoming a dad!

Only thing I am mostly looking forward to this month in NASCAR is the Coca-Cola 600.

They need to get rid of Brian France...
He's ruining the legitimacy of the sport with all the constant rule changes and gimmicks.
Big Bill is probably rolling in his grave...

Saw part of a "Beyond the Wheel" on the 90's Japan races, can confirm. IMO, if NASCAR could have kept up doing international (especially Japan, given how many younger people today love anime/JDM things) then A: this would have given them more clout with international fans, who could have also become a secondary fan base in times like these and B: It provides a way to grab attention, especially of younger and more culture minded audiences, without diluting their product, like what is happening now.

PS, given the reputation NASCAR and its fans/defenders have today, I'm going to propose that the internet is killing NASCAR. Or at the very least is not helping things

Ohh man, i forgot about those Japan races! They were awesome! But what was funny about them was that to the average Japanese racing fan who didn't know too much about NASCAR back in the US, they would have thought Mike Skinner was a superstar or something! Aaaahahahahaaaa! (He did win two of the three races)
And then there was the Drift King himself, Keiichi Tsuchiya (Buddy Baker called him "toosueya") putting on a drift clinic in the rain in a 3000lb Thunderbird cup car, that'll never happen again...
I also feel sorry for whoever decided to build that oval at Motegi, ONE FREAKING RACE! That was a real good investment.... Poor guys, they thought "if we build it, they will come..."
Apparently not more than once....

Indycar gave that Oval many uses.
