2021 F1 Driver ThreadFormula 1

These seem sensible but I don't think Hulkenberg will get the seat at Red Bull somehow, I think it's more likely he might get the second seat at Alpine

Makes sense, makes sense for him to go back there and he'd make a good replacement for Ricciardo. I hope his French has improved though :)

There will be an all new driver line up at Haas as both drivers have confirmed that they’re leaving. Guesses on a postcard for their new line up.

Kevin & Romain confirmed they will leave Haas. Old news but now official.
Haas: Mazepin & Perez (my assumption)

I’m not surprised to see Grosjean go, but Kmag as well? He’s decently quick, and has an actual fanbase. I guess he is rather overly- aggressive and not consistent. On second thought, I can see why he got dropped too. Most likely it’ll be Perez and Hulkenberg. Perez, as a north american, lines up well with a north american team for marketing reasons. He also brings basically the entirety of hispano-America’s hopes and dreams and fans on his shoulders. Hulk is also a free agent who has proven he’s got the goods with his great recovery drives the two times he’s raced this year.

Current speculation is that Haas will be taking on younger drivers next year, partially for the purpose of freeing up more operating capital for next year. Not too hard to believe, since I would imagine getting Hulk and/or Perez into their organization would cost even more than what they're currently paying Grosjean and Magnussen. Better to put that money into the car wherever possible.

Hülkenberg to Haas seems less likely. Pérez brings sponsorship money so may have a shot at various teams. The Mazepin to Haas noise is pretty loud right now, but we'll wait and see. Hoping Russell keeps ahold of a seat for next season.

Russell might be dumped on by the new Williams crew so he's reportedly 'reaching out to other teams'.
I'd love to see him in the Red Bull but would he do that to his 'old mate' Albon?

Would he still be under the Mercedes driver program similar to what Ocon was? (If Russell was considered a Mercedes driver to begin with, I'm not sure).

Yeah, it could be the case that if Perez takes his seat, he could be sidelined like Ocon was.

Financial aspect confirmed by Grosjean in an interview earlier. Reportedly Grosjean was in the Mahindra simulator last week, now there's understandable speculation that he has a Formula E drive lined up.

And possibly good news coming for Perez?

Toto's been quoted as saying Mercedes wont step in to stop Russell being dropped from Williams.

I hope he's not sidelined for a year.

Russell seems pretty confident he's not going anywhere, and from a financial standpoint I can see the logic in that as well. Certainly his contract would be cheaper than Hulk or Perez, and I can imagine the new owners are looking to put their money towards improving the car rather than throw money at a big name driver who still won't get anywhere near a points position because he's driving a million dollar shipping crate. And of course, there's no guarantee those drivers would even consider going to the bottom rung team.

Just to clarify a point when Horner said about Albon improving I take it he meant Portugal and San Marino next week?

If so Albon's not had a very good result to that request for an improvement...

Dropping this since reddit doesn't like reposts even if you hide the original:

Can't let that time be wasted. Sorry.

It's easy to get over-excited during silly season and then virtually nothing changes. I had assumed that Schumacher, Ilott and Shwartzmann would all be moving up, but thanks to this and a certain rich daddy it looks like none of them will. Instead they'll probably just get reserve/test driver roles which since the in-season testing ban have become an utterly pointless roles (hello, Pietro Fittipaldi). 15 years ago test drivers got more mileage in the car than than the racing drivers did, but now you just hang around the paddock and if you're lucky they'll give you one FP1 session in the car.

The grid's not big enough.
