I ended up running three slots in the Nations last night. I only got a slight bit of practice in Fri night and nothing Saturday morning, as I had a work gig that day. I get home maybe 20 min before Slot 2.
Slot 2, not great. But given the lack of practice and preparation, I suppose that's to be expected. I made the mistake of trying to slipstream qualify and ended up having to slam on the brakes pretty hard in my first flying lap to avoid a three car traffic jam in sector 2 before the hairpin. Then my second flying lap ends up in the in the grass for another similar incident. I think I started P14 or something like that.
I make up several positions on the first lap but then miss my braking point on T1 on the next lap. I have nowhere to go as there's someone to both my inside and outside. I mash the throttle to put myself into the gravel pit rather cause a three car pileup of my own. When I dig myself out of the gravel, I'm DFL and 17 sec behind the next closest car. I obviously had some good race pace as I closed that 17 sec gap to 9.5 sec by the end of the race but I still finished DFL.
Slot 3. I actually set a good Q time even though I only got 1 flying lap in after letting so many people by to avoid a similar situation to the previous Q session. I start P4.
Then I have one of the biggest brain farts that I've had in long time and don't hold the brake on the grid and get a pretty big false start penalty. By the time I finally start and get through T1, I'm something like P15. Again, I have decent race pace and gain several positions but lost way too much time on the lead pack to ever hope to bridge the gap. I take consolation in being able to work my way up the field and finish P9.
Slot 4. Fastest lobby of the night, at least in terms of Q times. I again only get one flying lap in but this time biff it pretty hard - a full sec slower than my previous race. I'm slapping myself on the forehead as I start in P15.
I buckle down, focus, get my elbows out and go for my most aggressive start of the night. I kept it clean but I made sure I got the inside line for most of the first lap and didn't give an inch to people trying to push me off my line. I'm up to P8 by the end of L1. I gain a position on the tight lefthander before the downhill straight on L2 for P7. I spend the next several laps in the midfield slipstream train, long enough that I start to think that this may be how we're going to finish the race. But then on L6, P8 bridges the gap, gets on my tail and bumps me going into the tight downhill lefthander. I'm just able to catch it before I go off-track but he obviously gets ahead of me. I'm close enough to him that I'm able to brake late and give him exactly the same type of tap in the double righthander at the bottom of the hill. I gain the position back and he falls in behind me and we race clean and contact free for the remainder of the race.
A couple of incidents ahead of us allow me to move up to P5 on L7 and my now squeaky clean race buddy makes a few overtake attempts on me but can't make them stick. Finally on L9, he's able to get position and passes me on the inside of the double righthander on L9. It took me a lot longer than I wanted (and longer than it probably should have) but I finally had a good race and result, crossing the line in P6 for 72 pts.
Time is again tight this upcoming week but I'm hoping to get at least one go at Sardegna on Wed. We'll see.
