I am intrigued about the race on the streets of Chicago. The last time I was intrigued about a race in NASCAR, it was when the inaugural "Mudsummer Classic" happened when NASCAR Trucks raced at Eldora for some dirt oval racing. I'm just hoping things don't go haywire considering recent air quality issues impacting parts of America. This is going to be interesting.

It's supposed to abate somewhat to the "moderate" category for the weekend. Currently, it's in the middle of the "unhealthy for sensitive groups" category, which is one up from "moderate" (and well down from earlier in the week).

It's the rain I'm worried about - there's a better than 50% chance between early afternoon Saturday and late afternoon Sunday.

Because there is no banking, I would be very surprised if they didn't bring rain tires to this event.

They've been bringing rain tires to most of the short tracks this year and all the road courses the last couple, so they'll have rain tires here.

Depending on where exactly the walls are put, it could either drain better than the average track (if the walls are on the sidewalks) because the curb/gutter/storm drains are in play or a lot worse (if they're on the street up against the curbs) because said curb/gutter/storm drains will be blocked.

Saturday morning update - the rain showed up earlier than expected, as the Xfinity practice will start with rain tires. Also, those walls are on the street, so if it starts raining harder, there's going to be ponding.

Denny Hamlin gets the pole for the Chicago street race. Tyler Reddick 2nd, and in his first ever start, Shane van Gisbergen will start 3rd!

This track is cool. Bumpy as hell and elevation everywhere. Everyone sliding all over the place.

Edit:

I tried with these but you can't really get it that close:

The latter would work fine but there's nothing connecting South Lakeshore Drive to Roosevelt Road south of Grant Park:

I'm still trying to figure out NASCAR's weather policy. Lightning strike within 8 miles = 30 minute red flag. Okay, I get it. Yet everyone stands around outside in the open during the delay rather than seeking shelter. So what's the point?

The cars getting struck by lightning are more of a concern than the paying fans!

Smart decision making by NASCAR to start single file, still a little calamity on the open lap but so far nothing caution worthy. Have a feeling that wouldn't have been the case with a normal start.

Edit: Kyle Busch into the tires.

A few cars have been in the tires. Notable is Noah Gragson who has been in the turn 6 tires 3 times.

Just tuned in to the race. Are the Cup Cars running mufflers? They sound like the have an unusually low engine note.

Edit: Sick drift & save from Truex there!

Has been a fun race so far. Unfortunately there is a concern that the race may be called early because of darkness. Especially if we keep having yellows.

Edit: Race distance has just been changed to 75 laps.

Race distance has been cut by 25%. Lap 75 now.
