According to Scott Mitchell from The Race Piastris contract with Alpine expired on 31st July due to the fact Alpine couldn't find a cockpit for him for 2023.

August 1st Alonso and AM announced their partnership.

August 2nd Alpine confirmed Piastri as their driver for 2023. Some hours later Piastri denied racing for and with Alpine in 2023.
Alonso (best buddy to Mark Webber, Piastris manager) in the same minute Piastris statement was dropped:

Do they make double-wide cockpits?

Meanwhile Liz Truss has announced she's driving for Alpine F1 in 2023.
I'm picturing it now, other drivers eating a banana on the grid pre-race for an energy boost...you eating a parmo.

Like I said.

The plot thickens.

What a wild ride. Plus he's not just saying "things haven't been worked out yet, error in communication, stay tuned" type thing. He flat out says he won't drive for Alpine. He cannot be happy with them.

And now, the trolling:

I am so happy I was wrong. Couldn't be happier. Anyone here in talks with McLaren too? I think I heard @Famine might be in consideration for a seat.
He had a stipulation we change the team colors from Papaya to Indigo.

We’re sorry we can not come to such an agreement.

Now Alpine's lawyers "believe" they're correct. Not a particularly strong statement.

Nor does it exactly paint a picture of strong team cohesion if that is indeed true, since Alpine would pretty much be holding Piastri hostage within the team.

Indeed, even if they do believe it's true, they still announced it without even consulting with him. Hardly the start of a great relationship.

They must have top lawyers who do not know how to read a calendar.

Whereas Nadine Dorries has claimed that Alfa Romeo was her favourite Shakespearean lead character and hopes that Joe Russell wins the next World Series Championship!

All of this is just letting the chips fall for a Mazepin return to F1.

So according to Kym Illman as of around 20 minutes ago, Piastri is going to McLaren but Alpine argues their contract won’t allow it.

If I read correctly though, Piastri’s contract ended just before all this set off?

Apparently Alpine had a 31/7 deadline to activate his contract for '23 or he could talk to other teams. Something along those lines anyway

I've been thinking about this all morning and I'm more confused about Ricciardo's role in this than the specifics of Piastri's contract with Alpine.

Ricciardo allegedly has the option to extend his contract with McLaren by a year, whether McLaren wants him to or not. Yet Piastri is apparently going for that seat now. Is McLaren trying to buy out Ricciardo, or is Ricciardo in on the scheme? If he's in on the scheme, there's no way Alpine would take him instead of Piastri.

If Ricciardo is on his way out, but hasn't been told yet, this is a very awkward way to find out.

Piastri's wording made it quite clear he has an idea of where he will be next season.

That's the thing isn't it, he must be supremely certain he has a drive, to publicly denounce a guaranteed race seat takes balls if you haven't got something concrete.

I still wonder though, if he is going to Mclaren, are we certain he's replacing Ricciardo. 🤔

Don't forget that McLaren are entertaining the idea of Colton Herta as well.

If you want silly season, and this is predicated on Hamilton retiring, you could see Russell/Norris at Mercedes and Herta/Piastri at McLaren.

AlphaTauri and Red Bull are also seats which people are rumouring Piastri to be in line for. If he thinks he is good enough to climb the ranks in the RB junior camp, and be a Verstappen teammate, then that could be a good option. Gives Gasly a chance to escape and join Alpine for an All-French lineup. The RB Juniors haven't exactly impressed in F2 this year. Lawson is too up and down, Vips has been kicked out, Daruvala hasn't exactly blown the world away with being at Prema as an experienced F2 driver and Hauger has looked more like the also-ran he was in previous series' before 2021 in F3. Sticking Piastri in that program would be a massive coup.

Herta isn't an option just to the fact he won't have enough points for a superlicense. He needs to achieve 40 points in the last 3 years. 2020 he went 3rd in Indycar for 20 points, 2021 5th for 8 points so he is still missing 12 points. 10 will be awarded for finishing Indycar in 4th so he needs to be 3rd in the championship 2022 to have enough points to jump over the needed 40 points mark. At the moment he is 10th in the championship with 285 points and 4 rounds remaining while 3rd place has 399 points. The Indycar point system is a bit more complicated than F1 so he is mathematically still not ruled out but that's just very unlikely and can already be impossible after the next race. Closest comparison would be to say Hamilton still can win the F1 championship this year because he is only 112 points behind Verstappen while 235 points are still to be achieved.

Yeah there's no way Herta or any indy driver is getting a Mclaren seat next season. It'll be Piastri and either Ricciardo or Norris.

Williams announcement pending. I bet its going to be something totally unrelated to F1 drivers and they're trolling 😆

I'm glad Piastri is so confident in his abilities on track and his manager's around the negotiating table as to ruling himself out from ever driving for that team in the future. I'm not sure that burning bridges before you're even racing in F1 is a good idea.
