35mm's Snapshots

I bought mine for around 1600€, online. This was in December.

Just a small tip: the D600's battery life is excellent. I couldn't live with anything less than two batteries with my D200, but I with the D600, even when using the camera all day during vacation, I never depleted the battery. It would normally be good for 2 whole days.

If course, if you use liveview, AF and VR a lot, the battery drainage will be quicker, but even so, I'm not sure you'll need the two extra batteries right now (and the grip, if its purpose is to hold the batteries).

EDIT: I actually bought a 35 1.8G in Hong Kong for my father's D3200 and yes, it works OK on full frame. But only when used with bigger apertures and when focusing on near objects. For example, focusing at f/8 on infinity will show very pronounced vignetting.

Yep, know about the battery life. I might fall back to only one spare battery and the grip - the grip is mostly meant to balance the 70-200mm 2.8 and well...because I won't have to change batteries when I'm out. :)

I like to use the 35mm at around 2.8 max tho, so I hope it'll be all good. At least for now. I tend to use AF quite often, at least to get a general idea, but VR is mostly disabled. Lifeview is only good if you want to set up a shot, i.e. for fireworks etc., imho.

Edit: also, the grip will add +10 coolness to it! :D

Ok, nice.

Good luck with the purchase and let me know if you liked it afterwards. 👍

If I had the money, I would probably try an upgrade to the D600 from my D7000. After all, I would already know the controls, right? :) My next upgrade will probably be a D7100, though. Most of my shooting has become birds and critters in the parks, and I want the reach the crop factor gives me for that. The D7100 has higher resolution with the same crop factor, and the crop mode gives me almost the same resolution I have now, with a 2x crop factor.

Besides, when I do shoot other lenses than the long one (which is FX-capable) I wouldn't have to replace my short glass, like that Sigma 30-1.4, which is useless on FX.

Probably another year, maybe two, with the 7000, then we'll see.

On the other hand, if I decide I could supplement my meager and inadequate income by doing beach portrait photography, like 34,000 other people here, then maybe a better body would be in the works. I've looked at the web sites of some of the local folks, and I could do better than many I've seen. I just don't know if I could do better with a reasonable investment in time and return on fees. But holy hell; web site, yellow pages, advertising, brochures. I don't know if it can be done as a second job!

BTW, Welcome back... been missing the dailies!

Many of us would love to make some money through photography but then again, with the awful amount of well not so talented people around calling themselves photographers it's always hard to start something. :)

I'm all for full frame, but can't argue with that. :)

Nice to see your back.

Thanks for the words, guys. 👍👍

Love the Airport lounge shot. Shame the bin is there. That building is nice too, I like how it blends in to the night sky, looks like something in Tron.

Thanks.
I kinda like the bin. I mean, I like how it breaks the symmetry. But having said that, it does grab the attention a bit too much.

From here on, expect lots of street/urban photos. And I mean lots.

These first ones are from Macau. Then, it will be from Singapore, Cambodia (Siem Rep), Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur) and, finally, from Hong Kong.

It will be a long trip...

EDIT:

Since I'm posting photos of Macau, I though I'd share with you two curious facts that I'm sure you did not know:

- Macau was established as Portuguese colony in the 16th century, and up until 1999. It's magical to go to China and literally see Portuguese architecture all around (like the street pavement in my b&w shot above). Also, most of the names of streets and stores are also written in Portuguese.

- Right now, Macau is the paradise for gambling. The whole place if filled with casinos. In fact, gaming revenue in Macau is now FIVE times that of Las Vegas.

So there.

I don't like the idea of making the full-res files available and I think that, in general, 1024~1600px is enough to appreciate a photo online.

But I can share with you the full-size link of a particular shot, if you're interested.

Interesting to hear about the Portuguese influence on the architecture, I did think the black and white shot on this page looked very European. Also you're making me crave a wide angle lens with these street scenes.

^ I discovered last year that I love doing street stuff with ultra wide-angle lenses. I think it has to do with the fact that, unfortunately, I can't shoot street candids like many people do so well - I just don't have the courage. So, I guess this is my way of doing it...

RE: D600 battery life

After 2 days at the zoo it looks like this. Have to say, the third battery is going to have a really, really boring life I guess. :)

^ Told ya! ;)

Oh, and contrary to older Nikon bodies, you'll see that pretty soon "Battery age" will go up to "1". Don't worry about it, it's normal.
I personally think it's best that way, because on older bodies, it would maintain the "0" value even when batteries were old and already lacked some performance. I think Nikon did this so that even slightly used batteries could be distinguished from brand new ones.

Rotate the batteries anyway, rather than using the same one or two over and over. I had three with my D5000, and I have two with my D7000. The reason is not because the D7000 is any better with battery life, but because the D700 batteries cost half again as much!!!

I had them marked 1, 2, and 3 so I could keep the rotation. Not that difficult with only two. :)

I did notice that VR usage ate up the charge in the D5000, but wither the D7000's batteries are simply much better, or VR is less of an impact compared to everything else, but I have no problem getting days and days on a battery.

D600 uses the same battery as my D7000. I guess that makes sense, being otherwise so similar.

My D5100 seemed pretty good on it's battery, the D200 is another story...

It's certainly enough to appreciate them, I just like to look at the small details. Thanks, will let you know.

The D5100 drained 2 batteries dry during Le Mans - so ~1000 photos per battery. Then again, rotating is obviously a thing to do. :)

Fantastic shots. It's... awesome to capture and see the juxtaposition between colonial influence and traditional Chinese culture. It's always been a little weird to me that Macau was Portuguese and it had significant Portuguese influence while just across the Pearl Delta, Hong Kong was similar, yet completely different with the British influence.

I've never been to Macau myself, though I've spent a significant amount of time in Hong Kong. I would love to visit Macau some time, and see and feel the differences and contrast of the two cities.

Have a good time in Asia. I can't wait to see the Hong Kong pictures.

Stunning images as usual. What is nice to see, is that your processing your images like your shots at home rather than trying something weird. This makes the images truly pop.

Sprite and Crash: thank you. 👍👍

Those are the bad parts, right there...
You see, I'm already back from vacation (and working). I was on trip from July 6 till 22.
The second bad part is that I was in HK for such a short period of time and always in a rush. Unfortunately, I don't think I have decent shots from HK, to be honest. 👎
