3D Modelling, Post your 3D models! (Cars, Planes, People, Landscapes etc!)

This a motorbike I've been working on in my own time, it's not mechanically accurate mainly because I challenged myself to keep the tri count below 20,000 and because I haven't created a motorbike before. Getting the chain to look convincing but keeping it low poly was the biggest challenge but I think I've done just about as good a job as I could, hopefully a good normal map will help it. Try and guess the main inspiration for the design. :) I'll unwrap and texture it soon.

So during my class on Sunday I decided to make a pop can. :P This is what I got:

I have no idea how to render things so I am rather pleased with how it looks. Also I have no progress to show on the R8 sadly. :(

It looks nice, I think it might look better if you increased the saturation of your diffuse because it looks slightly greyed out.

Why did you do this?

Did you have a...

Anyway, it's a good model and great for a first attempt at rendering. :)

I don't know what that is or how do to it. Could it also be because of the grey backdrop?

Get your texture put it into photoshop or GIMP and adjust the saturation so the colours are stronger. A lot of things could cause a grey effect but this would help negate it. I just applied this effect to your render, I think the red looks much better but of course it's about personal preference. :)

Yours

Slightly stronger saturation

Anyone recommend any better (and free) software than google sketchup 7/8? I wanna get into modelling but don't get along with sketchup.

SketchUp is good for square shapes, a bit awkward for anything else. But it's also really easy and intuitive to use compared to other software.

A free software that's highly capable (but a lot more tricky) is Blender. If SketchUp is like driving an R/C car, then Blender is like flying a Boeing 747 - a lot more powerful, but expect to spend a few weeks doing tutorials before you'll be able to do anything else.

You can get it here: http://www.blender.org/download/get-blender/

Thanks!
I also have a few weeks to kill in between exams so yeah... No worries :)

For my final major project at college, I decided that I'd model a car for the first time. More specifically, I decided to model an F1 car! Now seeing as I'd never modeled a car before, I may have been a tad over-ambitious. I modelled using the 2013 version of Autodesk Maya, and would have textured it using Adobe Photoshop; however with the deadline looming I resorted to material shading instead. Also because of time shortage I wasn't able to model the cockpit and background details as originally planned; nonetheless I feel it came out pretty well! :) Here is the DeviantArt link, were I have uploaded the work...

This was much harder than it looks to model, I used mental ray in 3ds Max and the standard shader but it still took 1 hour and 40 minutes to render the video on my laptop. :) (Make sure to watch in HD)

I like it, you've put some effort into that front wing, I think it would have been worth putting a few extra polys into the wing mirrors because some of your renders would look much better. For you first car it's very good, I think it's really just a case off adding more detail because when I saw those renders I could immediately tell it was based on a Caterham. Shame you couldn't get the cockpit done in time.

Cheers Peasant (totally talking down to you there ); the front wing was a real pain to do, which probably comes as no surprise. One of the weirdest issues I had with it was that while looking at reference images the wing would look slightly different, depending on which angle I was looking at; so that made it rather confusing at times.

If I go back to working on the model, sorting out the wing mirrors is definitely one of the first things I'll do. However if I'll go back to it or not is questionable, as there are other projects I'd like to work on...

Great job on Bender by the way; I feel that if a Futurama game was created, your model could be used. The quality really is that good; what's more you've included all the details, right down to his storage compartment!

Usually it's to do with the focal length of the camera, ideally you want very flat reference images with barely any or no perspective in them. The problem with making a cartoon character however is that they have a certain look at certain angles but when you try and produce a model the reference images don't make any sense so you need to make compromises in certain areas of the model. Thanks for the positive comments, I'll have to update the video at some point because I think I did a lazy job of the animated render.

If you want to make the animation a bit more lively, here's an idea...

Not gonna lie; I'm finding that song strangely addictive!

I was talking more about the render/shader settings of the animated part, I was going to use marmoset but my trial expired, nice suggestion though. :D

Have you used up your Maya trail as well? If not, you might be able to do it in there; I imagine you can load models made in 3ds Max, in Maya? I'm not actually sure as so far, I've only ever used Maya.

I've never used Maya but I'm sure there are many ways to send things between Max and Maya, I don't think it's that much faster though. Rendering a scene with 270 frames, 2048x2048 textures, about 6,000 tris and at 720p whilst trying to make the model look good isn't going to be quick on a laptop. I've been trying to use some fancy viewport shader but apparently I have to use an old version of Max for it to work, I think I'll just look for another computer that I can install Marmoset Toolbag on because it's great for producing quality turntables quickly.

EDIT: I found Mudbox is quite good for producing turntables and since I already have it installed I used that, it took a couple of minutes to render and I had a good choice of material and lighting presets.

I.. cannot... stop... replaying.... help... me!

edit:

Also.. downloaded Blender, I'll see how I progress having only used Skethchup for creating, and Rhino3D for looking at other peoples stuff.

Hello...does anyone know a good place to find blueprints for the McLaren P1? I want to attempt to model the car piece by piece, starting with the headlights.

Edit: Nevermind, I found one but I'm going to start with something easier.

Any ideas?

What I'm working on for school:

High res sculpt (nothing to fancy) for the shirt, pants, and body baked for a normal map for a (slightly) lower res mesh.
