So during my class on Sunday I decided to make a pop can. This is what I got:

I have no idea how to render things so I am rather pleased with how it looks. Also I have no progress to show on the R8 sadly.
It looks nice, I think it might look better if you increased the saturation of your diffuse because it looks slightly greyed out.
Why did you do this?
Did you have a...

Anyway, it's a good model and great for a first attempt at rendering.
I don't know what that is or how do to it. Could it also be because of the grey backdrop?
Anyone recommend any better (and free) software than google sketchup 7/8? I wanna get into modelling but don't get along with sketchup.
SketchUp is good for square shapes, a bit awkward for anything else. But it's also really easy and intuitive to use compared to other software.
A free software that's highly capable (but a lot more tricky) is Blender. If SketchUp is like driving an R/C car, then Blender is like flying a Boeing 747 - a lot more powerful, but expect to spend a few weeks doing tutorials before you'll be able to do anything else.
You can get it here: http://www.blender.org/download/get-blender/
For my final major project at college, I decided that I'd model a car for the first time. More specifically, I decided to model an F1 car! Now seeing as I'd never modeled a car before, I may have been a tad over-ambitious. I modelled using the 2013 version of Autodesk Maya, and would have textured it using Adobe Photoshop; however with the deadline looming I resorted to material shading instead. Also because of time shortage I wasn't able to model the cockpit and background details as originally planned; nonetheless I feel it came out pretty well! Here is the DeviantArt link, were I have uploaded the work...

Cheers Peasant (totally talking down to you there ); the front wing was a real pain to do, which probably comes as no surprise. One of the weirdest issues I had with it was that while looking at reference images the wing would look slightly different, depending on which angle I was looking at; so that made it rather confusing at times.Bender from Futurama -

This was much harder than it looks to model, I used mental ray in 3ds Max and the standard shader but it still took 1 hour and 40 minutes to render the video on my laptop. (Make sure to watch in HD)
I like it, you've put some effort into that front wing, I think it would have been worth putting a few extra polys into the wing mirrors because some of your renders would look much better. For you first car it's very good, I think it's really just a case off adding more detail because when I saw those renders I could immediately tell it was based on a Caterham. Shame you couldn't get the cockpit done in time.

If you want to make the animation a bit more lively, here's an idea...Thanks for the positive comments, I'll have to update the video at some point because I think I did a lazy job of the animated render.

Not gonna lie; I'm finding that song strangely addictive!
Have you used up your Maya trail as well? If not, you might be able to do it in there; I imagine you can load models made in 3ds Max, in Maya? I'm not actually sure as so far, I've only ever used Maya.I was talking more about the render/shader settings of the animated part, I was going to use marmoset but my trial expired, nice suggestion though.

It's not. The face isn't made after anyone!
In a close up it certainly doesn't.
