Max got on my nerves when he first got the RB seat and was all over the place, but he has put up some good shows as well which made me appreciate his presence in F1. As a Ferrari fan I was pissed off when he crashed into Vettel but I figured that's just Max element, gotta live with it

Villeneuve is an unsung hero of sorts. The guy was set to have a winning career in Indycars but moved to F1 and quickly got the DC.

He also got 2nd at Le Mans and won the Indy 500. I rememeber watching him in Indycar and F1 and he drove like a gentleman...

Max has the 'too much too soon' but hey, so did vettel and hamilton.

I don't think Vettel had too much too soon, he proved himself in a lower team, and was champion within 2 years. Verstappen is in his 4th season, and is starting to show too many poor decisions, which are countering his brilliance.

I'm not sure why they put Mexico in that video, IMO he played/drove that whole incident perfectly.

Otherwise he's a 'new' talented kid desperate to prove himself while two(!) 4x World Champions fight it out. After China he was visibly different from how he was previously after on-track incidents. He apologised to Seb and he took on board that he needs to change his approach. I think we'll see a different Max going forward and I wholey(?) agree with Brundle.

Too much too soon? If Jacques "the singer" Villeneuve is an unsung hero surely so his Hamilton, and even more so Vettel.

Villeneuve was a World Champion that year. Proven. Can't take that away from him, no matter how much some might want to.
I know, it wasn't an attempt to discredit his accomplishments, but he was an example of someone that was rather full of themselves, and reckless, to the point that their F1 career went backwards instead of forwards. I could never discredit Villeneuve as much of a pain he is in the media, as he has won in pretty much every racing series he's ever been in.

This is what people are talking about with Max. For all his youth, he's still in his 4th season.

I'd like to say that without Vettel and Hamilton still racing Verstappen's results would be far better and/or he would have won the title by now, but most of his errors are self-inflicted.

Max is just what happens when you take your usual top driver prospect and skip the vital learning experience that he would get if he spent more than one year in junior formula, and it shows. His talent is undeniable, but all the speed and ego in the world means little if your on-track etiquette is Senna-esque in the bad way. He's lucky most drivers in F1 are good enough not to run into him when he changes direction in braking zones. If he did that among other F3 drivers or even F2, he might have learned much sooner why it's such a bad thing to do.
Jackie Stewart said if Max was in the sport 30 years ago with this attitude he probably died in a couple of seasons.

Jackie Stewart is an old man now so I dont take his word very seriously anymore. That statement also speaks more about the cars of that era more than the drivers. Remember a little incident could cause a fuel leak and fires were almost instantaneous so there's that

I think despite the age JS opinion is still slightly more qualified than a couple of random guys on the internet like me and you. :P

The point is you cannot zig zag at Kemmel straight and expect nobody pounch you in the face at next driver's briefings.. what if that Max vs. Kimi at Spa happened with 70's cars?

I don't think it's fair to compare to that era of cars. It's like comparing apples to explosive oranges :P

I don't think that is his point though. Stewart made a name for himself in his career being highly critical of the safety issues the sport had in the past, which he had every right to do watching his friends and fellow drivers be killed over the years. His critique has led to actions in the form of safety regulations that have saved many since.

His point is that Max drives like F1 isn't still a very dangerous sport. He was also highly critical of Senna's race craft too for the same reason. If your race craft would have gotten you killed 30 years ago but now just ruins others' races as well as your own, there is still something wrong with your race craft. The rules about how many moves you make aren't there for sport or etiquette, they are there to keep everyone safe.

Alot of Max's driving style could of been honed in lower formula if he was given longer there, most of these moves he does could backfire massively around inexperienced drivers and he would learn to reign it in a tad.
