7th GTP F1 World Championship (F1 2010 edition) * SEASON FINISHED :'''( *F1 2010-2016

One 1:22.0 is pretty good. That around my fastest quali lap anyway. 1:28 would OK race pace for the beginning of the race but I think you would find yourself pretty far down the field if that is during qualifying.

Yea I just done an online race and was averaging roughly 1:28.xxx. Having issues with the brakes on this circuit for some reason usually I have no grip when accelerating but this tracks not so bad for it but my brakes are just loving lock-ups atm never had this problem before :S.

Again Im not expecting to be anywhere near competative for the race just gona enjoy the drive tomorrow, used to me my favourite track until they installed that chicane at the end but Im learning to love it again 👍

Hey guys just done a qualifying session with Ken and I set a 1:22.071 3.211 secs ahead of Ken, good pace?

I wonder if you sorted out that middle sector where you were losing all the time cos that's vastly improved, about a second or more faster than you were yesterday 👍

Well I guess I did 👍

Hey Tom, on the video it has you at 1:23.493, 1.79 seconds ahead of me???

Well i'm just going from what I saw on my screen after I put that last minute banzi lap in 👍

Well that was random, hitting 1:28's online yesterday, just joined a game and was hitting 1:23's :/ and theres still room for improvement on turns 7+8 and definately 10 my brakes always seem to either lock up or fail there haha. Haven't tweaked them in the garage yet though

You can't magically find 5 seconds though Ali! It sounds much more like one instance was with tyre sim on and one was with it off which is worth about 4 seconds. Also, a full race fuel load is about 3 seconds slower than a minimum fuel load.

yeah people need to realise that. Check the sim settings when you join a lobby. I don't race if they're off as there is no point.

Yea I think tyre wear was off actually.

On the 4th red light they all started and I was stuck until all 5 went out, has that ever happened to any of you? I've never really had any lag problems on here

Think I'm in for a tough 1st race. I hate this track and I haven't got nearly enough practice in thanks to the outstanding L.A. Noire and some exams aswell. Don't think I'll be miles off the pace but I'm expecting to be at the back or thereabouts. Definitely looking forward to it though, GTP races are usually the most competitive I'm involved in.

You'll be fine and after a fantastic Spanish Grand Prix i'm ready and in the mood for this evening! 👍

Lagged alot then froze, sorry. I actually lagged on the start line lol which is why I got away so slowly. Looked like a tough battle at the front, looking forward to seeing the result.

First race in the series: how do you feel?

It was a good first race in the series. We were targeting a Top 8 finish, and it felt good to finish in 6th despite a car that wasn't too strong in Qualifying.

Can you explain your tire strategy?

We made the decision to start on the Hard compound expecting some rain eventually, which did not happen. It took a few laps to get the hang of keeping the car in line, but I like starting on Hard because I can spend most of the race building a pace and then have a sprint at the end on Options.

Interesting scrap near the end....

Yeah, I was on Options and making the most of the rubbered-in track as well as my opponents being on old Hard tires. I managed to jump up from 9th to 6th in a three-car scrap after pit stop late in the race. I had my suspension set up for near-max height, and I felt I was able to gain a lot of time in Sector 3 due to handling the infamous chicane well. I try and drive consistently.

Sadly, I'm still suffering from the online jitters. No pace until I started to relax at the end and was making headway on Ali. Not referring to front runner pace by any stretch, but my usual pace.

Started off in a good battle with Tom and Mike, back and forth, quite a lot of fun. Sorry about the tap Mike, I was so into the battle, I completely missed my breaking point and didn't leave myself anywhere to go. Glad it didn't affect you too much.

To make matters worse, after practice recording, virtually without issue since the PSN came back up, the unit decided to stop recording 21 seconds into the race. I think the 7 year old PC is just pushed too far, to be reliable. It should be better next race, new PC on it's way :)

Cheers and thanks for the race, see you next time!

I see I wasn't the only one making a debut today, which is nice and only makes me smile even more. :D
This was pretty much the perfect race as far "perfect" goes, I have never really enjoyed much success at Catalunya and I will probably never find the two seconds left to hit a 1'20 like Shaggy and DarkPSI do. But I do somewhat enjoying driving it and I do enjoy a good level of consistencey generally, even if my pace is not the best, its ok.
First of all, I practiced a fair bit for this one as I know from past experience that trying to run Catalunya with no practice is an excercise in frustration. After the short practice the previous weekend, I didn't like the consistency I was getting and I was making far too many mistakes.

I spent the week basically working on setups and finding a good balance of consistencey. I ended up with a very conservative setup with a 7/7 aero balance that could net me a 1'22 in qualifying, which I proceeded to do so in a practice race yesterday with Shaggy and Dark. But after the race it was interesting to hear that Dark was using a surprising aero setup, something more like I've run at Australia, so I decided to try that out and see if I could find some more speed while keeping the stability. The end result was a setup that produces 1'21 in qualifying if I hit a sweet lap but still keeping a fairly stable setup although I had to be careful on the power and with my steering inputs.

Then came today where the first race was cancelled after several people got disconnected - I managed to set one of my best times of a 1'22.2xx (or something like that) in the brief dry qualifying session before we restarted. So I was already a little gutted that we had to restart especially as I set the time on my first lap so I could have saved the tyres after that!
Imagine my dismay when we restarted with a wet qualifying session and a forecast for light rain in the race! I decided to not bother trying to find a wet setup and simply went out to see how my setup was with intermediates. I didn't find it too bad really, I was still 2 seconds off the ultimate pace but the car was stable enough and trying the full wet tyres also seemed promising. Fortunately my lap (1'25.0xx I think) was good enough for 6th on the grid which was boosted to 5th after pipeslice's grid penalty. I only had one tiny incident with Mikethehockeyfan when I caught him at the end of the lap and attempted to overtake on the start/finish straight. It seems there was a misunderstanding here because he moved to the inside line and I assumed he was letting me past but when we got to the braking zone for turn 1, he was still right there when I turned in which took me by surprise and led to a small spin for both of us. No harm done though.

The race start went ok, seemed everyone in the top 6 ran wide in turn 1 and I ended up just driving along the kurb on the inside of turn 2. I was then behind Mutu for the rest of the 1st lap and decided to make the most of his cautious driving and overtake on the brakes into turn 10. After that it was mostly following my teammate Baumi and waiting for a mistake. Around lap 3 or 4 I think it was, Pipeslice was very quickly gaining on me as he had fought through the field and had got past Mutu. I made a mistake or two and he soon caught me and got past at turn 5 when I ran wide. Again, it was simply a matter of following until eventually I had to pit on lap 10 as my soft tyres had begun to wear. By this time Pipeslice had got disconnected and Mutu was on a long run on hards, so I was back down in 5th. Pretty much nothing happened until Mutu finally pitted putting me back up to 4th and I begun to catch Baumi again. Eventually Baumi too pitted and it was just me and Mutu who had caught up with me on his fresher tyres and got past after I made a few mistakes.

At the end of the race, it was pretty close between me and Mutu, I did catch him again after he seemed to make several mistakes and I got past back into 3rd but we started to catch backmarkers at this point. First I got completely confused when Ali weaved all over the place in front of me before turn 7 and then spun out and then I caught tombrooks at the final chicane and had a slight moment of distraction which caused me to light up the rears a little too much in the last turn and slide, handing 3rd back to Mutu. I was then pretty much looking after 4th watching the gap to Baumi and I again caught Mutu finally on the last lap but with no time left to get past.

I'm a little gutted to miss out on a potential 3rd but as always its a case of "ifs". While I made several mistakes, so did Mutu, so it was clear I was always going to be fighting him. I'm happy it ended so close with a 0.8s or something margin as at least it demonstrates how close it was! I'm extremely happy with 4th in the circumstances, I really can't complain for a debut race on one of my least favourite tracks. I'm also happy to pull off a clean overtake on lap 1 :D.

I was a little annoyed at the time with backmarkers, but they didn't really do anything wrong, it was just unfortunate I caught them at critical moments like the final chicane. I realise they have their own battles going on, so I'm not going to complain. I made my own mistakes elsewhere so it wouldn't have mattered.

Thanks to Mutu for seeing me coming into turn 10! 👍

Started: Quaiflied 6th/Started 5th
Finished: 4th
Average race laptime: 1'24.xxx
Biggest mistake: Spinning on the kerb at turn 5 (9 seconds), a few half-spins at turns 2 and 3 (1 second or so each time) and a big slide in the last corner behind tombrooks (lost position, a couple of seconds)
Favourite moment: Catching Mutu several seconds per lap in the last 4 or so laps. :D

Yeah sorry about smashing into you twice, I assumed that you would be braking a bit later than you did, but all I can say is thanks for crashing into Mike, it bumped me up the order quite nicely

Well a complete nightmare of a night for me pretty much a waste of time.the first race I lost connection which shocked me cause I've never had this happen before.then the next race in qualifying I had major lag issues and then I got a 5 place grid penalty when iwas driving down the straight I hadn't even been back to the pits dunno what was going on there.then in the race I had cars just jumping round the track, some even flying, one minute a car would appear the next it would be gone I managed to get 16 laps in not knowing what was going on in the race and then lost connection again.just a complete nightmare .not sure if weather had anything to do with it but I hope this doesn't happen again as I can't see the point.

No worries. 👍 I realized that I was being uber conservative on that corner, making me partly to blame. I just hate driving through the logo :)

Great race tonight guys, and thanks for the race reports. For myself and Dark at least I think it felt more like a competitive sport than a game - immense concentration involved!

A big shame that Pipeslice wasn't involved to make this a 3-way battle for the win as he set the fastest lap of the night in the first qualifying session before the restart. Should have been even more thrilling. Damn it Dark, hit the record button next time!

I don't know when i'll have the time to write up my own report but it should be soon.

Here's the results anyway:

1st. Shaggy Alonso - 46m12.879s
2nd. DarkPSI +2.6s
3rd. Mutu20 +77.4s
4th. Ardius +77.7s
5th. Baumi27 +79.9s
6th. MikeTheHockeyFan + 1 lap
7th. Tombrooks97 + 2 laps
8th. AliT12 + 2 laps
9th. kcheeb + 2 laps
DNF Pipeslice

Decent race for me considering I hadn't done a 50% practice at Catalunya until today. Also I have only played the game once over the past 2 weeks prior to today so I guess I can be pleased with the third place even though I felt I didn't drive very well today. I thought I drove much better in Shanghai for example but finished 4th.

So yeah, wet qualifying. Nice introduction back into the game! I didn't really know what setup to use, first I went for a 6/4 aero on wets and managed a 1:25 with plenty of mistakes. During this time I completely ruined a qualifying lap for Nervous which was completely moronic - I was annoyed that I was held up on a hot lap so was following to try and get by him if he made a mistake. I ended up punting him off at turn 9, seriously ****** driving.

I ended up getting 5th fastest with a reduced downforce setting and a bit better driving. Over 2secs of the lead however.

I decided to opt for hards because of the chance of rain basically. I know I'm not good enough for a win but I thought that if it started raining during the race I could get away with only one pitstop and steal some positions.

In the race I started 4th thanks to Pipeslice getting a grid penalty. Got a reasonable start and was 4th going into turn 1 without much incident. I got bumped into exiting turn 1 which caused me in turn to bump into Dark I think, but other than that no drama.

The start of the race for me was all about finding my braking points again and it took me a good 8-9 before I was comfortable. As such, I was losing a lot of time early on. Ardius did a nice braking manoeuvre on me at turn 10 on the first lap due to my over cautious braking. We exchanged positions a few times after we both had spins but eventually he pulled awayy. He was on soft tires but it has to said Ardius had pace. I was expecting to be dueling with Baumi but now I had someone else to think about. I would see him later :)

The middle stint of the race was undoubtedly where I was at my fastest. I got keyed into the circuit and was starting to drive more smoothy. I don't think I ever figured out 7-8-9 but I wasn't losing as much time I was to begin with. When people had stopped for hards I ended up ahead of Baumi and we had some decent back and forths. He was definitely faster than me, especially at the campsa complex where I was clearly doing something wrong, but I managed to drive consistently and when he did eventually take me after a 3 laps or so he spun it losing a lot of time and I drove off ahead of him. Me holding him up like this would pay dividends later on. Also well done Baumi in waiting up for me after you punted me at turn 5 :)

The punt off did effect my race slighly because after I pitted for softs Ardius was ahead of me by about 6 seconds. I started pushing like mad trying to catch Ardius with 11 laps to go and it was to my detriment because I was making lots of silly mistakes. Once I calmed down I was reeling him in seconds a lap despite the engine being turned down. I did a 1:22.2 with yellow tires at one point which is bar none the best lap I've ever done around this circuit. After passing Ardius (who span out) I opened up a good 7-8 seconds allowing for a comfortable last few laps for me. Mentally however I completely shut off because I was making mistakes everywhere, it was ridiculous how badly I started driving. I was shifting into neutral going into turn 5 and in the final chicane, running wide everywhere, turning in to early. Nightmare. the gap between us at the end was .4 of a second in the end.

Had pipeslice not got disconnected and Baumi not made a bad strategy call I feel I would have been far lower down the field, but I will take the 3rd of course :)

Well done to all back markers who tried the best to get out of everyone's way. Good stuff.

I guess I need to learn Monaco now. I think I've probably done about 20 laps max of that track since owning the game. Should be interesting.

some even flying

LOL

I don't think that I could have got a 1:29.000 if I had tried, shame I mucked up on all my laps, if it had been dry i'm sure I would have been mid-grid 👍

Hi Mutu 20,

thanks for posting the quali pics.
My fastest round was during the last seconds in qualifying. It was a 1.22.5 or so.
Race Report will follow today

Best regards

DarkPSI

Bit of a mixed bag for me really, for once I didn't have a car that felt like it was on ice so I was able to be quite consistent, as far as being a back marker goes I guess. But I started 6th because of Pipeslice's penalty and managed to stay 6th until Pipeslice got back with the front runners.

I was in 7th for most of the race and was very happy there as I was about 10 sec's behind the guys infront and 10 secs infront of the guys behind me who sound llike they had some great battles (kcheeb, Tom and Mike). So I wasn't caught up in any battles and had a clear open track infront. So I was really setting a constant pace of 1:25's - 1:26's which I was more than happy with.

Obviously every now and then I'd loose concentration for a second or two and this is a sport that can really punish you for it so I did go off track a few times, esspecially on turn 10.

Mike soon took 7th from his prime tyre strategy so I could see my challenge was to get 7th back, which I eventually did when he finally pitted, but by then it was 6th due to people's connection issues.

With about 10 laps or maybe a little more I was hapily in 6th with still the nice gaps infront and behind and I felt that if I just kept my pace I'd be taking 6th which I was more than happy with. Then as things are never that easy in this sport I lost my pace which caused Tom and the guys to catch right up which then put me under pressure.

Me and Toms battle reminded me a little of Vettel and Hamiltons as after every pit straight Tom was right on my tail, luckly I could break away ever so slightly during sectors 1 and 2 but in 3 and the pit straight Tom would always be right back, Unlike Vettel I buckled a few times under Toms pressure and made a few very costly mistakes and he past me as well as Mike who I didn't even notice was there he just came out of nowhere, his pace must have been great on those options.

So I was stuck in 8th for the last few laps and everytime I would catch up to within a second or 2 of Tom I'd make mistakes again, too much adrenaline I guess lol. So my pace was totally gone and kcheeb had found some great pace so he was gaining on me greatly every lap. I think when we crossed the finish line he was well within a second of me, if it had been a lap longer he probably would have past me so well done to him great racing.

Great race guys was my favourite so far. I was disappointed not to have come 6th but nevermind I'll try make it my target now lol

And yea sorry Ardius about turn 7, I was desperately trying to catch back up with Tom and as you saw I couldn't get much grip on those last set of laps. I remember seeing you behind but I ddn't think you were close enough for me to pull over before turn 7 without a considerable amount of slowing down so I went into 7 then pulled over which went wrong and I spun lol.

And Kcheeb I was over conservative alot going into 10 as well was so fed up of hitting the logo lol

Well I really enjoyed yesterday's race and I don't think that i'll be peforming so well in Monaco as it's really not my type of circuit 👎

No problem, it didn't affect me in the end but it was a little confusing! I understand its hard to judge where to slow down and how fast the guy behind is catching, so I don't mind being held up a little bit as long as its not for several corners.
If I was you, I would have carried on into turn 7/8 and all the way to 9 and maybe pulled over after 9. I'd wait for the car behind to actually be behind me before pulling over, and I wouldn't pull over near the braking zone or entry point to corners because it gets confusing.

The best place to pull over is nearly always just after the exit of a corner or way before the braking zone of a corner. When it starts to get into the braking zones and turning in points, its much less confusing if you just take your racing line and pull over later. As long as its not for more than a few corners. The best place I can think of is if you pulled over to the tight inside after a corner, as the outside is the natural line the speed carries the car, so it makes the decision process easy.

I think another rule of thumb is to not try to let cars past in awkward places such as chicanes or tight corner combinations. Better to carry on and ok, you slow the guy behind a bit but its just less confusing and awkward than trying to place the car so its not in the way when the corner direction changes.

This is going to be critical at Monaco, as there is little margin for error and not much space to let people past. I'd actually say the drivers catching lapped cars are the ones who need to be most careful there - I think people should realise that lapped cars might make strange changes of direction if they are not careful.
