Kaniyodrift I already stated it works of the HDD long time ago
sry my bad - i saw someone complaining not having DVD burner ;)

When you talk about your PS2 HDD do you mean you have the HD that came with FFXI and you dl'd the GT4 demo to that... or are you somehow using your computers HD to play the demo off of? :nervous:
just a regular PATA drive connected with NWA
LAN installation from PC took around 20 minutes

I felt the brakes weren't that forgiving. With the DSC **** turned off as far as it'll go (it seems to still leave it active) if I don't pump the brakes when slowing from high speeds I loose it everytime. My ***** is that every car feels like a 2001 buick park avenue around the track. I.e. they feel like they are floating rather than firmly planted on the ground. Is it just the way nurburgring is, considering the track is a big hill for the most part?

how did you put the demo on? the ps2ownz site wont let me register
there's a really nice n00b tutorial and all the necessary files - try again sometime

basically what u need is a PS2 that can read CD-Rs, 1 original PS1 game, 2MB free space on memory card and most of all - a working PATA drive with Sony NWA

here's a nice tutorial for installing HDD: http://www.ps2nfo.com/hddfaq.html
HDD chart: http://ps2drives.x-pec.com/ (see if the HDD u want works)

i have Maxtor 6B200P0 and i confirm that it works - gotta set the jumper to Master though

Well, the 'Ring is considered one of the toughest and most dangerous tracks in the world.. it's possible those are conditions specific to the 'Ring.. that the hills and varying surfaces & bumps just make it very difficult to control a car.

CobraGT: okay.. I thought you meant engine sounds. :) And it occurred to me that "page 2" probably wasn't a good pointer, since I have my profile settings to display 100 posts per page.. hehe. My "page 2" is probably very different from yours. :)

So you do need the HD that came with FFXI then?

Edit: NM, I gotcha. So do you need a modchip to be able to read the CD-R, though?

Remember when in GT3 you could tap quickly the reverse button (without accelerating) to engage neutral and hear aerodynamic/tire noises at high speeds (fun at test course with high powered cars)? If you do the same in this demo, with the Falken GT-R race car you can still hear the gear whine, even though the gear is disengaged. Gaining quickly speed after a full stop on a slope without accelerating, with the same car, does not bring out the gear whine.

its possible that the differential(s) are also straight-cut. Infact, doesn't the whine vary with vehicle speed, not with engine speed? (implying they are ONLY simulating the sound of a straight-cut final drive?)

But I guess that still doesn't explain the inconsistancy

My impression is that it's much more difficult to drive cars through corners - for instance, I remember slamming the car in the left bend after the backstraight on Trial Mountain and going away quickly at high exiting speeds without problems. With this demo, it's just not possible, with a normal car (non racing) I have to drive carefully under 100 km/h or hitting will the wall be inevitable.

Also, is it me or does each car have different tire sounds? Try comparing Falken GT-R's tire sounds with road version Skyline's.

As for the tire sounds, don't you just love them? I'm really impressed with the way they squeel and chirp now.

u need it only once - to read the CDR u burn that installs the PS2 KeyLaucher onto the memcard
after that i only use one original PS2 game which triggers the Memory Card Exploit and let's me launch apps like HDAdvance straight from the memcard with the press of 1 button - so if u can do the installation on someone else's PS2 that reads CDR, u should be fine if u follow all the stuff in that tutorial precisely ;)

ok back to demo:
trying to play hard on Nür with Falken GTR is hell imo... even on Trial Mountain i struggle to keep the lead with that car - for me it seems much harder than racing GT-ONE on Laguna Seca in GT3... which now seems like a childs play

I noticed that too, and I really like that. The Nurburgring has those different surfaces, and in this demo they really do sound different when you're driving upon them. Great! 👍

Is triangle still the reverse button on manual cars? Any reverse lights?

That would be the new physics engine at work, methinks. Sweet, ain't it? :) After all, in real life, it ain't that easy to drive like a maniac, and it looks like the new physics engine gets a lot closer than before.

Gah, you can instead just buy once a prog (original and correct region) called
HD loader, HD Advance or HD Advance 2....Then you install games onto the HDD by putting the HDD in the PC and transfering games to it with progs like Winhip something. You can also have ftp progs on the HD loader if you want isntead.

I really like this demo, it's much more sophisticated than all the previous GTs. I can't capture any sounds or videos due to lack of equipment though, sorry! :indiff:

And Soman is right, you can install the demo without a modchip if you know what you're doing.

Cheers,
the Interceptor

For those who wish to mod/rip the demo data out
just let you know that GT4.VOL seems having different file system now
extract.exe (gran turismo file system extractor) from prologue/bmw rip kit gives me errors everytime I try to extract GT4.VOL
no hope on extracting Ice Arena and other tracks
unless someone out there invent a new extract/rebuild programs
or someone discover GS/AR codes to unlock them

oh u think ur smarter than me

my PS2 sits in LAN with my PC:

- i boot PS2 with Ridge Racer in it and press O
- on PC i start HDL_Dumb, find the ISO and install it
- when done i reboot the PS2 with Ridge Racer in it and press [] to open HD Advance and play ;)

no need BUY anything - no need to have a modchip - no need to take out the HDD :)

how fast is the tranfer? directly from the pc to my hdd its about 9mb/s

Falken R34 + Nurburgring straightaway = This. 👍
The quality of the video isn't too great though ;) If you look at the movement of the car, you can see it vibrate and shake from the speed and imperfections on the track

1MiB/s? this demo took some 20 minutes - i'm seriously not gonna drag the HDD to my PC and connect it to have it faster and then take it back into the PS2 when i have 2xLAN on my PC ;)
not worth it imo - i won't do it even if u force me

Oh and did anyone notice the ability to manually control lots of different camera angles during replays? I don't remember if previous GTs allowed this, but it's available in this demo :) If I remember correctly, these angles used to be done automatically but now it's all manual controls. Press X to change the option, then L1, L2, R1, R2 all give you different combinations of camera angles.

Here's a little clip to show that too heh.
