From a spectating perspective, it’ll be interesting to watch how the mid terms unfold. My cousin and his wife, whom are both definitely on the left of things….told me about a month ago that they’re all in on Trump if he runs again. And these were two people who absolutely detested him. In their views, they feel that the democrats have gone waaaay too far left on a lot of issues.
From a global perspective if they think the dems are way too far left, your cousin and wife aren't even remotely left leaning.

Currently democrat policy would barely make them even slightly left of centre in most of the rest of the western world.

There needs to be a moderate Republican or Democrat for 2024 who isn't old. Old politicians are one of the most significant issues in the government. Someone in their 70s doesn't have the slightest clue what the average 30/40-year-old's life is like.
And these were two people who absolutely detested him. In their views, they feel that the democrats have gone waaaay too far left on a lot of issues.
That seems odd if I'm honest. The Democrats, in general, are barely left on most issues. Politicians like Bernie Sanders are certainly left/progressive, but your run-of-the-mill Democrat is really only left on social issues.

Democrats are probably closer to what Republicans used to be before they went fascist.

I would guess at DeSantis, as there isn't really anyone else who is polling high enough.

That’s the polling front runner right now. Although I did hear a speech Tim Scott gave a few months back, at the Reagan Library I think….. and it definitely sounded like a speech of someone who has higher political aspirations.

Matter o’ fact, a Trump-Scott ticket cooooouuuld work. A Trump-Desantis ticket would be too easy for the dems to grab sound bites and run them up the flagpole all campaign long. Plus I would think the Republican Party wants Desantis in Florida more than they want him in the white house. Not until they’ve found a suitable replacement for him there. But the same could be said for Tim Scott too.

Oh boy, I couldn’t wait fast enough to hear what ludicrous, borderline racist remarks Trump would make about having a black running mate. Esp. after this gem:

“I have done more for the African American community than any president with the exception of Abraham Lincoln.”

Much like most of his presidency, it would only be a matter of time before he steps on his meat.

If they were able to find a suitable replacement for Tim Scott’s senate spot, that honestly would probably be enough to get Trump back in the white house - provided that the democrats can’t find a true to life moderate candidate without any crazy green energy policies…. Or someone that at the very least has a viable plan that takes into account the corresponding economics of it all. But such a plan would realistically take 30-40 years…. And won’t be 100% green. The democrats probably can’t get any good sound bites out of that, so I won’t hold my breath.

However, you might see Nikki Haley get called off the bench to run with Trump. She was actually decent. A wild card would be Rich Grenell, but like mayor Pete, he just doesn’t have the experience

Personally, I hope Trump doesn’t run so the Republicans party can get a waaaay more likeable candidate at the front of the ticket.

We shall know in a few months after the mid terms.

We'd also have a lot of potential Trump voters scared they might end up voting for a black man, so it could be funny mind games at their expense.

Na, there’s not that many truly racist people in America.

What’s more plausible is you’d get a big influx of people voting for a Trump-Scott ticket just to “prove” their not racist. Sort of like the Obama effect.

I can see it now:

“Look, SEE!! I’m not racist!! I’m voting for a black guy WHEN I vote for Trump! SEE!!! I’m not prejudice!”

- or something like that 🙄

I highly doubt picking a black man to run as his VP would be enough, esp. if Trump says something about Scott that equates to sticking his foot in his mouth. The black community will be watching everything Trump/Scott says because they'll know instantly if Scott has their interest at heart or if he was picked just to go after their vote. They also won't take kindly to some of Trump's more usual demographic thinking a black guy in their party means, "not racist".

The problem isn't there not being that many racist people in America. It's that the ones that are in America quite clearly lean towards Trump/Republicans & who knows what their feelings will be.

Well, until Tucker Carlson, Steven Crowder, Ben Shapiro, or even Nick Fuentes tell their base, "No, no, this is one of the good ones."

The whole, "See, we're not racist" thing is weird, though. If it becomes apparent Scott was picked to do that, wellll, that actually does seem a bit racist.

Agreed on most things. The whole “racist” hyperbole game is something that both sides, and they’re respective media outlets, play well. It gets to a point where if EVERYTHING is racist…. Then nothing is racist.

The one thing not taken not account about a theoretical Trump-Scott ticket, is what Scott would say to his regard of why he’s a republican. He was a Republican before Trump ever got to n the political scene. Guy is super smart and well spoken too. The fact that he’s Black is just icing on the cake…. Just like Obama.

Of course Trump will F’ it up some how…

But if he managed to keep his mouth shut, and the Republicans could somehow have a good messaging campaign, they’d have a really, REALLY good shot at the white house. Not to mention it would just set up Scott for his own presidential run.

If I had my druthers, Trump would decide not to run, opening it up for a Tim Scott - Nikki Haley ticket with no particular preference on who is at the top of said ticket. Both are very talented, experienced, and generally well-liked.

Impossible. Even today at Trump's speaking arrangement, the man would talk about something that did happen but exaggerated it so much that it basically became false.

The man can not live without spouting the first thing that comes to mind if he can use it to say, "People say I'm the greatest man, buhlieve me. I've done things no one else has. Me. Me. Me. "

I don't know much about Scott, but if he's that good, he should run on his own w/ his own running mate. If he can survive Trump, DeSantis, & whoever else attacking him through the Primaries, he'd probably end up looking like the best option.

Somehow you are attempting to conflate one group saying 'stop treating us worse because we're not white' with the side that backed "Mexicans are rapists' and are supported openly by Neo-Nazis and fascists...

These two sides are not equal at all in this regard (or in regard to women's rights, LGBT+ rights, etc.), and have not been for a very, very long time.

There's probably not that many out-and-out racists in the USA. But there's nearly 75 million people for whom racism just isn't a problem, and nearly 80 million for whom it's not a big enough problem to try to stop it.

In other news, Mike Pence's COS, Marc Short, absolutely excoriates Matt Gaetz...

There’s fringe groups on both sides. Likewise, there’s exponentially more good people who identify as Democrats or Republicans. Being a republican or a democrat doesn’t mean you have to be 100% in every position the party holds.

And yes, there are most definitely racists on both sides. Even more so when you open up the definition of a “racist” to include people who are other than Caucasian. I do think the republican = racist card is one that the Democratic Party has overplayed the last 6 years.

An interesting local Democratic Party bell weather race in California will be the Los Angeles Mayoral race between Karen Bass and Business man Rick Caruso. Here you have very liberal and diverse Los Angeles, with a more progressive candidate in karen bass (who as of late as tried to distance herself from the whole defund the police movement - as well as the entire Democratic Party), against a waaay more moderate candidate in Rick Caruso. Where I work in East LA, you’re seeing a lot of Caruso banners. I don’t work in South Central anymore, so I can’t comment on what the majority of front yard banners are there. I’d be curious though.

I’ll be very curious to see which way LA goes on this one

I dunno...

How can you be a good person and identify as a Republican? What does that party stand for? Corruption? I can tell you what it seems to stand against:

  • democracy
  • free speech
  • the constitution
  • equal protection
  • bodily autonomy
  • accountability
  • transparency

The list goes on.

Edit:

I guess if you're Adam Kizinger, Liz Cheney, or Mike Pence or you took out a billboard like this one, maybe you can personally combat the corruption thing? But, to paraphrase a quote from Apollo 13, what do we have in the party that's good?

I'll get back to you Gene.

Indeed their are, and what are the objective of these fringe groups on each side and which one is the most violent (by a significant margin)? I do also note that you failed to actually answer my question.

A statement that assumes fringe groups on the two sides are automatically bad.

I didn't say anything different, so I'm not quite sure why you are rebutting points I didn't make.
And yes, there are most definitely racists on both sides.
Indeed, but only one side seems to regularly and repeatedly get them showing up at rally's and events in support, as such attempting to conflate the scale is both inaccurate and disingenuous.

Given the overt support for Republicans by racists and neo-Nazis and the common failure of Republicans to condemn them (to date not one Republican speaker at the Turning Point event I posted an image from above had condemned the nazis who showed up in support) I don't think it's either overplayed or unwarranted. The Trump years drove up the levels of over racism experienced by people of colour in the US, calling that out seems to me to be the right thing to do.

Apart from an odd moment of daftness speaking in support of Scientologists I've not seen anything that would suggest Bass is much more than moderate (by the majority of western countries standards), what did I miss?

Both sides say the EXACT SAME THING about each other on their respective media outlets. It’s pretty astounding if you make it a point to watch the different sides spew their talking points.

Don’t have time to respond to everything, (as well as I realize we won’t see eye to eye with a lot of it), but I can speak to Karen Bass a bit. Like most politicians, she just sticks her finger in the air to see which way the political wind is blowing, the precedes on her way. She’ll have a tough time defending the comments she’s made in regards to policing. Caruso has the dusting advantage of not having a real political record of any consequence, as well as the ability to simply be able to call balls and strikes with how he sees things…. Without having to defend a past political record that may not support their current position.

As Los Angeles continues to descend more and more into a hell-hole, all the while with the Los Angeles Summer Games getting closer by the day, it’ll be interesting to see how both candidates attempt to brand themselves in the runoff.

If you take away the media and look solely at the facts (laws passed, party positions, candidate's/politican's own words) it's really clear that the current Republican party doesn't stand for democracy in the slightest. They don't even stand for a republic either or representative democracy. As for the other points, while Republicans claim they're for free speech, they don't actually understand what it means. The same goes for the Constitution too, but I would say Democrats and Republicans ignore the Constitution substantially.

I would guess at DeSantis, as there isn't really anyone else who is polling high enough.
Trump won once and lost once. I know some people think his ego will drive him to run again, but I think the opposite is true. I think his ego is big enough to keep him sitting at home and telling folks the election was stolen (which I don't think even he really believes), maintaining his plausible deniability and insulating himself from a more direct rejection.

DeSantis is probably the big-R Republican front runner. Unfortunately.

I'm hoping Larry Hogan runs for the Republicans (shhhhhhh... don't jinx it). He's sane and fairly moderate, and I think centrist Democrats wouldn't get heartburn voting for him over Uncle Joe or whoever else the DNC manages to scrape up.

You're making the mistake of saying that I in particular am one of the "sides" and that the point I'm making equally applies to any other "side". None of that is true. I'm not saying the same thing about both sides, and what I'm saying about one side simply does not apply to the other, at a minimum, not in nearly the same way. I'm not spewing talking points, I'm not taking a partisan position. I'm not a democrat.

I'm telling you the republican party is trash for real substantive reasons. Your "both sides" point is irrelevant and does not apply to me or my statement.

In a rare bipartisan vote, the Senate has passed the chips act. This is a good thing.

KEY POINTS
  • The Senate passed bipartisan legislation aimed to help the U.S. compete with China by injecting tens of billions of dollars into the domestic production of semiconductors.
  • The bill will now head to the House, where lawmakers hope to pass it and send it to the White House for President Joe Biden’s signature before Congress leaves town.
  • The package includes more than $52 billion for U.S. companies producing computer chips, as well as a tax credit for investment in chip manufacturing. It also provides funding to spur the innovation and development of other U.S. technologies.

Both parties are hot garbage. But the Democrats are an overfull landfill and the Republicans are Love Canal.

Both of the major parties should oppose this.
But they won't. They will continue buying votes with our money and selling our grandchildren (or children) down the river for short-term political gain, even if they dress it up as a "long-term investment".

Why?

@Yard_Sale

Sure.

But when you say "I'm a republican" or "I'm a democrat" what are you really saying? You're saying that something about what that part stands for is what you personally stand for. What does the republican party stand for? The principles of the democrat party are not inherently awful, even if I don't agree with all of them. But what are the principles of the republican party?

As best I can tell it's the list I made. They openly stand for corruption, the destruction of democracy, the destruction of personal liberties. It's like... what they're running on. So how can you BE a republican and call yourself good? If you're trying to define the party (like you're Pence or a Chaney or whatever), that's one thing. But how you can say you're subscribing to the party and not stand for the things the party seems to stand for?

@Danoff

I have argued with many Republicans who still believe that they are the party of personal liberty, business opportunity, and small government. In fact I was just arguing with one yesterday. He looked at me with a straight face and said those things.

None of that has been particularly true in 20 years. And it has been actively untrue for at least 10. Yet that mythos persists, at least in some of their own minds.

Market reaction so far is muted, and for damned good reasons.

The amount of information you have to ignore to cone to that conclusion us quite frankly mind-blowing.

Which side was it again that held an insurrection?

Odd as she seems to have shifted around the detail not the overall positions she hold, while you give a free pass to Caruso who has literally changed party alligence numerous times.
