RC is better than Pepsi but not as good as Coke. Simples.

Edit: Anyone here ever have a cream coke? That used to be a treat I'd have with my daughter. Splash of cream in the bottom of a glass, fill with ice and pour Coke. Cream is kind of necessary because it withstands acidification better than milk, but the latter is fine if you consume it fast enough and/or don't mind a little curdling.
No but the British burger chain Wimpy used to excel at ice cream and coke floats which I imagine are broadly similar.

I have no doubt they are.

I believe the casein protein in the dairy stabilizes the bubbles, making them substantially more difficult to pop, and Jess and I would race to see who could pop all of the bubbles first.

Sweet or sour pickles? I like to spread a layer of Sun-Pat (a popular local brand of pb) on my egg and bacon sandwich in the morning, gives it that extra something.

I did it with sour pickles. Sweet might be better, not sure. It certainly was not a requirement to make the sandwich work.

Wow. I'm not altogether sure this is a taste I want to acquire on its own. Now maybe if they were both slapped on a burger or inside a corned beef sandwich...

Speaking of soft drinks that taste like medicine, who here has dared to try Moxie?

Having lived in Maine, it was inescapable for me.

I love how accusatory their mascot is:

"Ya better drink my horrible* soda and love it, see!"

*I've never actually had it.

Also, I haven't had RC in years. I remember it being a worse Pepsi.

That’s how I remember RC cola. The wanna be Coke.
When growing up it was Coke then Pepsi then anything other than an RC. Dr Pepper me please.

Now as an adult I’ve gained the wisdom to know it’s Pepsi, beer and coffee :dopey:

There's definitely something else going on there, but I'm inclined to agree.

The sweet almondy flavour you get with Amaretto is the closest thing I can think of. Apricot and cherry pit extracts have similar flavours.

I would agree on Dr Pepper tasting like cherry Coke.

See, most of the people I know think I'm crazy for saying these two drinks are comparable when they clearly have identical tasting notes. I did try Cherry Dr Pepper on my first visit to the US and it really just tasted like double strength cherry coke.

RC is better than Pepsi and Coke but not as good as Kofola.

Kofola and Baikal have been on my must-drink list for a while. Tried a retro Lithuanian variant of the latter last month and it tasted exactly like those pick 'n' mix cola bottle gummies with a very mild hint of dandelion and burdock. Not terrible, but the lack of carbonation killed it.

Hard to match Root/Birch beer in my top tier of dark soft drinks. Mixing one of those with French vanilla ice cream makes for an unparalleled combo.

...Takealot is the local version of Amazon and they do alright in terms of prompt delivery. After reading your description plus the single review found on the page you linked, I'm much, much, muuuch more disinclined to try it out now.

Since you never had Dr,Pepper, please let us know how it tastes like because we don't know how to describe it to you....

I have drink it for months if not at least a year, but Dr. Pepper, together with the smell of Target stores and Food For Less supermarkets will forever be anchored and etched into my mind as symbols of America! The United States... When I first moved to the US in my early teens, my first experience, senses and smells were all new compared to the old Continent, and Dr. Pepper was a brand new Soda taste I never had before...

My sister loved it, I was a bit more reticent to say so, but I enjoyed the new slightly strange taste....it has a offbeat vanilla taste...

It's pretty good. I don't drink prune juice (cause it's not great), but it does kinda taste like putting a hint of prune juice in coke, and it goes really well together.

I also thought peanut butter and pickle sandwiches sounds liked the most disgusting combination one could ever conceive. And those flavors are actually quite complementary and work well. Sometimes food is surprising.

WTH???!

That looks like what one of my daughter's cartoon character would eat...

I probably haven't had a Dr. Pepper in 20+ years. (Ironically, it's my wife's step-father's favorite soda). And yes, I have a hard time remembering and trying to describe the taste. I mean, how would you even describe the taste of Cola to somebody who's never had it. And I was never really a Dr. Pepper fan, (that's putting it mildly) but I don't think it's QUITE as vile as what you describe above.

Anyone who has not tasted Coke must be out of this world, and you wouldn't even be able to communicate with that entity even if you knew how to describe it....

How can you say such vile thing!!??

RC better than Pepsi? Madness...

Coke on a glass glass with lots of ice maybe, but RC?!

Actually, come to think about it, out of my almost 3 decades living here, I don't think I have ever tasted RC before.... I think I have always have dismissed it as a legit soda..

Maybe I will give it a try soon and see what's it about...

But I am pretty sure It would NOT beat Pepsi....

It's a pop-ular subject.

Pepsi to me tastes like Coke with a little washing-up liquid squirted into it. I'm not sure but I think the recipe is or was based on the cola nut while Coke is purely chemical. But I'm not sure. One thing for certain is that Coca-Cola have made billions of dollars from brand placement and conditioning people that their brand of fizzy sugar water is superior to any other's.

I remember in the nineties a UK supermarket brand Sainsbury's pretty successfully cloning the taste or at least the packaging for their own brand soda. Coke came down on them hard and squashed their branding and people stopped buying it but I'm pretty sure it was closer to Coke than Pepsi was.

Soda/Pop, whatever you want to call it should only be used as a mixer.

.. and I don't like mixers cus that means I'm not drinking liquor neat from the bottle.

Damn right.

Seriously though, Coke was about the only one I ever drank, but these days I do not drink such fizzy drinks (aside from the odd Red Bull during a 24 hr race) as a rule, they are Satan's wee wee.

I don't recall ever having picked up on that. Maybe I need to pick up a Coke.

I'm given to understand that apricot pits (as well as peach pits) are commonly utilized in amaretto production nowadays for cost. They possess the necessary chemical compound.

Sometimes a distraction is needed and the topic is harmless, or so I would have thought; I've learned about others on the forum from it and what I have learned disturbs me deeply.

As a kid the only time we got pop was when we went to my grandparents. Back then my favorites where cherry coke and cherry 7up. As I got older I started getting more into mountain dew and squirt, although I was more into things like Josta or the Snapple element drinks in my late teens, early 20s. Nowadays I prefer root beer. Not A&W mind you, though that is the better of the root beer flavored pops. I like real "herbal brew" root beers, particularly those from Wisconsin. Our local meat market carries a bunch of different small brands.
Also, for the record... Pepsi. Worst. Pop. Ever. Wild cherry Pepsi is a little better. Not a fan of RC either. By the end of a can, my teeth always felt a bit gritty.
One more thing to add. A cold Coke from the can or glass bottle, not plastic, on a hot day, with the effervescent burn on the throat. Man, that is nice.
Mostly though, I just drink water.

Both Coke and Pepsi taste different in South Africa compared to the US. I think they use different "formulation" for a bunch of reasons.
South African toothpaste tastes disgusting.

I can't see the nutty lumps in the peanut butter in that picture.

I wasn't familiar with the origin of this photo so I had to look it up to get some context. Looks like these guys were way ahead of me.

"It's a bit sweet."

I love that commercial; the movie...not so much. However, there's a cover of my favorite Cat Stevens song (and one of my all-time favorite songs) "Sittin'" in it--performed by Elvis Costello--which I'm not aware exists anywhere else.

Add tabasco to give it a bit of a kick.
And Vodka.

And horseradish, Worcestershire sauce, and pepper. And I'll take condiments too.

No cream coke, but grew up with cream soda, which I feel like I don't ever find in grocery stores here in the US.

Whiskey and cream soda is awsome. Cheap supermarket Scotch will do, don't waste the good stuff on it (obviously) :)

Oh man one of my roughest drank to much days happened with the help of cream soda. A fifth of captains with a few bottles of Faygo cream soda.... i was like 19 at the time. Nearly 20 years on and I still can't drink the stuff.

Man, I wish we got Faygo in Utah. I've looked everywhere for it too but no one carries it, even the specialty soda shops we have here (think specialty beer store but for pop, you know, because Utah). I need some Rock & Rye for my bar. Thankfully, my parents brought me some the last time they were out here, but I burned through it really quickly.

Thankfully, I can get Vernors out here, but it's sold as a mixer and is insanely expensive. I bought a 12 pack of it a couple of weeks ago and it was $9.99. I used to get them 3 for $12 back home. A small price to pay though since it's delicious with some coney dogs or mixed with some Candian Club. Also, I'm fairly certain it's healing properties will make me invincible to the Rona.

You know. I moved to El Paso and didn't really miss Faygo, except Rock & Rye. I know its base flavor is cream soda, but the rest of it tastes so far from it that I can and do enjoy it quite a bit. However it is way too sweet for me to enjoy regularly.

Ah, but is it whiskey or whisky? And is it scotch or Scotch? There are so many different--and even conflicting--rules. I was given to understand "whiskey" is a largely British spelling, while Americans tend to favor "whisky". I've also heard an entertaining explanation in which the place of distillation determines spelling, with "whisky" coming from, say, Scotland or Canada (no e) and "whiskey" coming from, say, Ireland or America. I bounce between the two myself, not adhering to any particular guideline.

I could see an Irish whisky working in a cream soda, provided it's just a normal cream soda. Someone also mentioned a brand of cream soda that has a rye-something offering, and I can see the spice from a rye whisky or a high rye bourbon playing with the sweetness of the soda.

...

Just tried my first Coke in probably a decade, wanting to see if I can taste anything like the almond that was mentioned. Couldn't. Even compared it to some amaretto and still wasn't picking up on any notes. Then I accidentally spilled some amaretto into Coke...and it wasn't half bad.

Whiskey is Irish
Whisky is Scottish

General rule:
Irish whiskey is unpeated, non-smokey
Scottish whisky is peated, smokey

I prefer whiskey but drink both.
Interesting. I do recall seeing something along those lines. All of the "rules" seemed a bit arbitrary, and I suspect I'll keep bouncing btween the two without rhyme or reason.

I don't care for the peaty stuff myself. Most of the whiskey I drink is bourbon, but I enjoy Canadian and Irish frequently enough.

Jack can't be beaten for consistency; if you've had one bottle, you've had every bottle.

Jack's a little one-note for me. It's got all the sweetness and none of the complexity. That's great if it's what you're looking for.

Which ones have you had? I have a lot of varieties at the moment. I prefer the Honey style as it's just sweet enough. Mostly because I used it when I had a toothache and ended up needing a get a wisdom tooth taken out. The sweetness made it less harsh on the area when in a soaked cotton swab
