I like that video - it explains some differences between the two i didnt know about. I know i can 'feel' the car in AC slipping on the curbs,it does feel more realistic. Ive got to say the Z4 GT3 feels great to drive at Imola.

The one thing im finding it hard to look past in the first few hours of AC is the graphics - compared to Pcars, they are just so stale & lifeless. I mean, where is the actual sun and shards of sunlight? I know i should be concentrating on the gameplay, but the whole thing is so bare-bones its hard not to notice it. I go back on Pcars and it feels like its on a newer gen machine. Everything has that gloss on it.

Even that start-up tyre smoke at the start of every race in AC looks bad,it would be better not there - reminds me of Gran Turismo.

What I've discovered unless playing online the sun has been set so high in the sky it has diffused all the lighting. So no shadows, none of that sun glare. Offline once you set the time frame the tracks can become quite lifelike. More shadows, darker parts on track, lots of sun glare dependant on track and because of that you see a heavier texture and shine on the riad surface with all the grain.

Obviously a bit extreme on the sun glare but once you up the time if day as the sun is lower, there is your gloss and depth.

Think of a diffused light that removes all shadows. There is Assetto Corsa online. Flat and lifeless.

"end of the year blog"

By Marco Massarutto (Executive Manager – Kunos Simulazioni)

Another year has passed, actually our greatest one since we founded Kunos Simulazioni almost 12 years ago. We announced the Assetto Corsa’s project in December 2011, and so many things have happened since. We would never imagined that one day the game was going to be ported on PS4 and XB1, and even less that Assetto Corsa was going to feature such licenses and partnerships with the most important and iconic car manufacturers! The Porsche Program we unveiled this year has been awesome, and we are so proud to be able to share with our fans the very best of their production. 24 Porsche cars, reproduced in direct and close connection with their R&D department, as well as the Porsche Historic Museum. What a journey! We’ll never forget it, from a professional and human point of view.

The porting of Assetto Corsa on console has been an incredible journey as well, a crazy challenge for a little team like ours, and I would like to thank all our community for their awesome support and patience. We have faced a challenge that was totally new for us, discovering that there is much more behind the scenes, that is not related to coding, performances, features (I mean, the kind of things that as developers we are used to knowing and managing), but that needs to be done. Being able to release the game on PS4, XB1 and continue to keep it updated and optimize it also on PC has been very challenging and it’s pushed each single member of our team to the limit. But we did it, and your support and constructive criticism has given us additional motivation to work at our very best. I would like to take this opportunity to thank 505 Games, our publisher for the console version of Assetto Corsa. They have supported us at their best and have never asked or proposed us to change the DNA of our simulation “just” to please a wider audience. In a world dominated only by numbers, we really appreciate it, and thanks to this, our fans today can enjoy a genuine simulation on console. That, followed by Top Gear magazine, seeing that Assetto Corsa is one of the 2016’s seven greatest gaming moments! And how I could not mention the RedBull.com award that ASSETTO CORSA won, as READERS’ RACING GAME OF THE YEAR? Simply outstanding, thank you so much!

So… What now?

Well, we are going to surprise you in 2017. With new features and content, new DLCs as well free bonus cars and tracks. The latest PC build of Assetto Corsa introduced the customized championship, a very appreciated feature that will be explicit even better in future, and that will be extended also to the console version. At the moment, the team is working on private lobbies that will allow gamers to create their own races with their friends and create leagues. Also, we’ll continue to work to improve the control customization on console.

While you wait to get your hands on these new features, you will have a lot of fun with some new content: the Porsche Pack Vol. 3 will land on PS4 and XB1 as soon as possible, but it will not come alone. Let’s talk about tracks, shall we? The operations and logistics needed to bring the Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway in Assetto Corsa needed more time than supposed, and while we confirm you will finally put your wheels on this iconic track within half 2017, we’ll keep you busy with a new – surprising – circuit, created from scratch and designed to meet your requests.

In fact, since the “ideal” circuit doesn’t exist in the real world, we created it. Do you like city tracks? Drift layouts? Endurance courses? Then you will get all of them, with a new circuit, that will be available as free bonus content, in 4 different configurations, ideally placed in Scotland and created in partnership with Nvidia and Sparco. This track will allow you to enjoy each car included in Assetto Corsa, from the very little and quiet Abarth 595 to the racing cars designed for endurance racing, to the GT cars you are enjoying so much. We’ll unveil more details very soon, our aim is to release it within the Q1 2017.

It’s time also for some new free bonus cars, like the Mazda 787B, the Miata NA, the new Maserati Quattroporte and the new Audi TT. Then, we’ll be back with a new awesome “British Pack” that will bring you the latest line-up from McLaren, Lotus and maybe, something more. After that, we’ll welcome you again in our beautiful Italy, the Country of Alfa Romeo, Maserati and the Ferrari. Yes, the Ferrari: As you might know, in 2017 we will celebrate 70 years of the most iconic automotive Brand, and we’ll do it in our style, with seven of the most iconic and famous models created in Maranello. You can already start to think about your favourite ones, because you will have the chance to vote for it!

We’ve also started to work to create some new and solid basis for the future. Assetto Corsa is so much more we ever imagined, and our company has grown so much since we founded it. In the last period we worked to grow, evolve and improve our teamwork and logistics. Taking advantage of the maintenance operations that will involve the Vallelunga circuit for all of 2017, we are now putting the final touches together to open a new studio, still close to the Autodromo di Vallelunga, but with dedicated areas for VR, testing, multiplayer and R&D, that will allow us to work better! We will also be able to invite our guests, customers and gamers to an environment specifically designed for the production of racing games and simulations. This means there might be the possibility to invite our fans and supporters to our studio to discover what is in progress, and for massive testing, without the limitations imposed in a locations designed mainly for track activities.

So, another exciting year is approaching, but we haven’t told you everything yet! All of this wouldn’t have been possible without your dedication, support and -let me say- love for what we have done here. Believe me, the passion we see every day around Assetto Corsa, through these years, have given us the determination to work at our best even when things are not easy, and especially when we have faced some tricky challenges.

One final thing… Thanks to the great partnership with SPARCO, who recently officially jumped into the gaming world introducing a new dedicated cockpit, in 2017 we’ll unveil the most wanted official Assetto Corsa merchandise that you’ve been asking for! Stay tuned for more info!

Does anyone know what Time of Day Settings are used in that drifting video, Sunset Drifting @ Mugello? I don't think I've ever seen my car that dark! Also, are you able to use Post-Process Filters on console?

The end of the year blog seems encouraging, I think. What do you guys think? I am super excited for that new Ferrari pack...Although my excitement waned a bit when I realized that among those 7 cars are certain to be some Formula 1 race cars, right? They've had some historic F1 cars...At first I was thinking, "7 new Ferrari Street & GT race cars!!" :D That's okay. I'll be thrilled whatever comes our way. I'm placing an enormous wager that a proper (1962-1964) Ferrari 250 GTO will be coming our way and I am totally cool with that. Such a beautiful car. Mama mia!

Oh...If you liked that dude's pCars / Assetto Corsa comparison video - that was actually part 2 - part 1 is worth watching as well. He does a very nice job articulating some major differences.

Is Imola laser scanned in PCars? Most tracks in PCars look great and very alive but are not very precisely reproduced
Forget about how fast you are in one sim, how does it feel to you? Just drive the one you prefer.
Tyre model alone can justify lap time difference as well!
The other factor is also which one you drove last, if I drive in PCars for a while and get back to AC, I have to re-adapt to AC because PCars let you go away with murder and I end up overdriving in AC for a few lap.

Only the Palmer tracks are Laser Scanned if a remember correctly. Brands Hatch, Oulton Park and Cadwell Park.

I read only the British tracks were laser scanned for PCARS. 5 or 6 of them.

Try 6pm. I think the Sport filter over exaggerates the sun and it looks like his post processing of the video has crushed the shadow detail. The cockpit is dark but not that dark you cannot see any detail. Think I'll hop on and test it.

Cheers for that. Yeah obviously i can go a lot faster,i just need to learn the car and limits.

To me,AC is just a car physics showcase/hot lapping sim...i dont play online at all so theres not much 'game' there for me...the career mode seems so unfinished and tacked on its ridiculous. They didnt even make the thumbnail event pics hi-res....theyre blurry as hell.

Im so glad i didnt pay full price for this - £20 is about right. Same story as No Mans Sky.
Well it was tacked on tbf. This was never intended to be a game, career was only added because people asked for it. Custom championships are coming so that solves the rubbish career mode.

They have fixed sport mode, it was blinding. Expanded is the best filter, i hope they add more filters though as that over exposure still needs sorting.

Interesting.
How would AC's times compare to real life times? Does anyone know if there has been any testing on that?

The fastest GTE (not massively different in pace to GT3 cars) car in qualifying for last season's ELMS race at Imola was a 1.41.269 by the Proton Porsche team.

Ok first time ive ever played this ,on the first special event with the BMW road car,why the hell am i going into every corner on full lock and the tyres are just spinning and squeeling uncontrollably - and im 20 seconds off the bronze time.

Am i missing something here? Or is this just how the road cars drive? The BMW GT3 seemed decent to drive when i ran some hot laps.. (On PS4 pad)
I had the same problem with that car at first, the problem is that it's a drift car so the wheels steer at a stupid angle at full lock, I got the gold medal (using a DS4) by just pushing the analog stick about half as far as it will go to the left/right at the corners, any more and it drives like a broken shopping trolley.

As always, the trouble with real life values is:
1. Track conditions vary so much
2. BoP varies wildly per series

I always find it disappointing to try and compare exactly with real life qualifying times as a result.

No, you aren't the only one that used grip setting to "real" in GT6...
👍 I was beginning to wonder.

But Honestly. . I personaly find that even with that option GT feels lot more grippy than even project cars do.
The tyres engine/behaviour in GT are also very simple compared to the other to games.
Funny, because for me, AC has the most grip off track, but it has a far more realistically textured surface. My reply was more to point out that AC is not the only game to do this sort of off track grip reduction, and yes, GT6 has a much more simplified tyre/engine behaviour (for GT Sport, I cannot say), I will never dispute that. The total lack of compression lock with rapid down shifts in GT6 is an epic fail IMO, but AC has it's faults in this department as well, with the over abundance of compression lock on some H pattern shifter cars due to the throttle blip not being aggressive enough, and also the over aggressive nature of the downshift protection on some of the other cars. No game is perfect, but to make a statement that ''Every other type of game you could keep your pace and grip while on the grass'' is IMO just plain wrong.

I find any of the filters bad because it makes the picture colder. So I stick to default because there is no blue-ish tint going through it.

The times are messed up or look messed up in this. 6pm looks like 8am and 8am looks like 6pm. 8am being the best.

Oh and the F40 is such a blast but I'm lacking the stick shift. Never knew the F40 had no ABS...

New track sounds amazing. I imagine it's almost like a free roam track with roads through a small town, going out into the mountains for drift, and possibly a circuit thrown in the middle for proper races

Looking forward to the Ferrari Anniversary pack as well. Please let it have lots of old road cars and racecars. I hope there's an F50 and F355 in there somewhere.

After Porsche license I'm wondering how they could possibly top it next year, but Kunos is still going full steam ahead instead of resting on their laurels. Massive respect for these guys 👍

Miata NA, interesting, wonder which model :) I do hope F355 ( both road car and Challenge ) will get the nod.

Awesome. I'm glad they decided to keep things consistent between the PC and the Console. We don't even have PP Filters named "Sport" or "Enhanced". ::sigh::

I gotta ask...What makes a good Career Mode to you guys? I'm looking at Career Mode on the PC. There are 28 different Series. I've never gone thru them, but I see that the very first Series that's called "Novice Series 1" has 5 different events in it. Do they all have about 4 or 5 events to complete in each of the 28 different series? If there are 4 events per series, after a little quick trigonometry I come up with 112 different events to complete for the Career Mode. Of course, some are probably dumb, you're not going to please every person with every event. Do you need to have a spinning graphics that says "Congratulations! You earned a GT3 Series license!" or something? I'm not being sarcastic or argumentative. I've always heard the Career Mode sucked and I even went along with it because everybody was saying so...and I'm a follower, not a leader! Seriously...Please describe for me what would be a good Career Mode for a game like Assetto Corsa where you don't need to earn money or buy cars.

Also, besides the Career Mode there are the Challenges. 161 Challenges (including the new Porsche ones you guys haven't gotten yet).

I just counted all the Career Mode events -- 179 Career events plus 161 Challenges. That's 340 pre-arranged things for you to do.

Skill points and reputation statistics that carries over to online? Something that builds a profile on you?
That's part of a Career Mode? I was under the impression Career Mode was strictly an "offline" thing. I do agree that a system like that is needed. I know it starts sounding like a broken record, but it's true...We do have that on PC - but it's a 3rd party application called "Minorating".

EDIT: Lest anyone think I'm being sarcastic about this, I'm not. GT6 was my only other racing game experience, so GT6 is the only thing I have in my head when it comes to Career Modes. So please, forgive my ignorance on the topic.

Try project cars career mode... With contract offers that allows start in a category.. With kart Championships,up to the copy of the wec endurance championship with races up to 6H of duration... 24H le mans,24H nurburgring, 25H bathursts..clasic Lotus Championships..GT3 Championships..a copy of F1 world championship with 19 races of around 2H duration each. If you achieve wins you unlock invite event races..and without even buy a single car..it's very huge..and you do your career just like you want..

I've got more than 200 H putted in the career mode and I'm not even half way...

Not even the famous GT4 career mode is as huge the one off Pcars is..

For me the best career mode I've seen in a sim game

IMO, that is the problem. Things to do versus reason to do it. It is the UI/immersion that is lacking in AC. In GT6 and pCARS, you can compete against a global leaderboard in the seasonal Challenges. GT6 allowed you to earn credits and build/customize your garage. pCARS created a sense of driver career progression and race weekend immersion (better than AC). Plus, the AI difficulty in AC is inconsistent.

Ahhh...Like I said, I have no experience with anything besides GT6. I've never heard the details of Project Car's Career Mode, so thank you for laying it out for me. That does sound pretty good. I don't think AC could duplicate pCars' career mode since there aren't enough freakin' cars for each category. GT3 they could fill no problem.

I just downloaded a bunch of LMP cars: Audi, BMW, Bentley, M.Benz, Peogeot and a few more. Some are older, like the BMW, obviously. Some day soon I'm going to setup a nice big grid of cars at LeMans. I'll probably throw in some GT3's for good measure. :D I think I have a handful of older GT1 cars too. I don't think I'll run those.

@danardif1 -- I am in full agreement with you on that one. An official Ferrari F40 LM would be just fine! :D I finally came across this bad boy, but there are a few issues I need to fix. The car drives pretty well, but you can see the front tire ripping through the right front fender. A nice mod, but I'd much prefer a Kunos version:

Edit: @OooAhh Cantona - I'm not defending AC's Career Mode. I've always thought it looked pretty bare. I would equate the Challenges to something like Seasonal Events. However, without a worldwide leader board I can understand why some might find it boring.

👍 I was beginning to wonder.

Thanks for this info, much appreciated. Looks like we have a lot to look forward to.👍
Reg. downshifting being too aggressive, that appears to be bugged as it was not like this before the last update.

I find any of the filters bad because it makes the picture colder. So I stick to default because there is no blue-ish tint going through it.
Yes there is definitely a blue tint, but after comparing pictures I decided default looked less realistic.

This. A good career mode is one where you take on the role of a driver. In AC it just feels like im playing the game rather than being involved in something. Dirt Rally fir instance im competing in a championship against other drivers, it's not as in depth as Pcars but it's ok. Thankfully we will be able to recreate DR career in AC soon.

You shouldn't discount it so easily. Yes it's not as good in the physics dept as AS but with a wheel and good ffb settings it's a really good game. Very enjoyable.

No game is perfect and I agree that AS is not as pretty as it could, although I play on PC where it does actually look pretty good. However, once you learn the driving model you can really start to appreciate how good it is and the looks fall by the wayside. The pure pleasure that can be derived from just driving the cars is what keeps you coming back. I'd rather drive lap after lap in AS with no other cars on the track than play a full game mode of many other racing games I could mention.

Just getting back to you on this. I did 5 laps in practice mode with the stock setup and managed a 1:47.8 in AC compared to a 1:43.7 in PCars. Far and away the biggest difference for me is the kerbs. In PCars you can treat them like another part of the race track whereas in AC you have really got to be careful about how you use them

What settings did you have for the 1:47? All ABS/Traction/Stability on? Im just wondering is there something i need to change from stock straight away to get instantly faster times?
