Are you sure you aren't thinking of the phrase whose abbreviation reverses those three letters? I've never heard of "FTW" meaning anything besides "for the win."

Nope not at all. Does the AUP apply to PM's I can send it to you.

That's okay; I don't need it. I neglected to do my research before making that post, and Wikipedia generally knows every meaning of a given abbreviation, so I found it there, instead. You're right that it isn't very kind. Really, though, on the Internet, the friendlier sense of the term is almost always the one intended, as far as I know.

I apologize for going off-topic. I would include something in this post to amend that, but I don't really have anything to add to this thread beyond what I've already said.

Hey, I never knew of it as 'For The Win', yes the other is a bit more in your face. So I learned something new today. Back to the topic, I've offered my two cents in previous post's already, To add a bit more the advantage of a manual far outweighs the simplicity or comfort of using dogmatics :sly:. Plus it doesn't require as much skill if any to race and drive and automatic versus a manual gearbox on GT4, :ouch:!

I use both transmission, for a different situation:
Auto: Used when I'm practicing a new car (especially the 400HP+ cars & most racing cars, except rally cars).
Manual: After I getting used to these speedy wheels, I try manual. After I practised a lot and raced with determination and patience, I reached 90% GT4 progress (and becomes more skilled in driving):).

But GT4 is not so challenging since H-shifter is not supported (it's also happened in ALL PS2 games, I think).

(p.s. Now I know, FTW means 'For The Win'. I thought it means something 🤬. Sorry...)

No, like 'WTF' turned upside down, becomes 'FTW' :embarrassed: and still remains the same word:P (shame me because of my silly guess).
But it's better to not going off-topic, right?

I use auto. If i had a steering wheel id probably use... auto
I can't think bout the gears it hurts my head.

I've been using auto since I play racing games... now in GT4 with 68+% of completion, I'm using manual cuz it's way funnier and realistic. Great to feel the power of the car and have + control over it.

I think Manual Transmission is better that Auto. Moreover, The Manual let you freely control the gear and even give you more speed to go.

Yeah, I like using the Manual Transmission because you can get a little more speed through turns I've noticed.

Reading this thread, some are under the impression that auto is slow. I managed to complete all but one of the driving missions (mission 23, i didn't have the patience to let the AI pass me to slipstream them) and all but about 3 license tests in gold using automatic gears.

I switched over to manual and there is very little in it. Manual is slightly faster but there is the odd error, where i will tap the shift down too quickly and end up in 4th instead of 3rd, or where i press and hold it for two long and it shifts down too much. When you are adept at using both you don't get a very big difference in your laptimes (although on GT5P it makes a huge difference, GT4 is different).

Actually to a certain extent manual is easier, especially in cars that get a lot of wheelspin in 1st gear. All those people using manual who are slating the auto users, you've been doing it the easy way all along...

Well, for me, auto is the one - i have never and will never use manual - too much effort...but the auto box doesnt seem to hinder me - i can do Nurburgring in 5:10 with no cheats. And i can do La Sarthe new in 2:43 roughly. :) But every man to his own choice :D

I'm definitely a Manual driver. It's just not normal letting the car take control! By selectng the gear yourself you have far better control over road and engine speed and can limit your speed going round corners while still revving the nuts off the car.

I completed the game in auto, with all golds. I have switched over to manual now and would not switch back, its just 'better'

Likewise, I used all auto to complete every stat in my sig.

Manual is a little better in some cars at some tracks, but in very difficult races, in auto you can completely focus on driving the car.

With auto and full trans you can also adjust gears to better suit a particular car and track to a degree, although you can't alter shift RPM so you can't short-shift.

I still use auto the vast majority of the time.

(although on GT5P it makes a huge difference, GT4 is different)....

I've heard others say this as well, but I havn't noticed that much of a difference from man to auto in GT5P.

I have just made the switch today, and getting the hang of it ( very slowly ), but ive noticed i keep forgetting to actually turn the car at the right time because im too busy worrying about downshifting to go round the corner, therefore completely missing the apex lol

it not a case for auto or manual , it's a case of dual-shock controller against dfp /g25 steering wheels . using dual-shock you have to be artistic and talented , where as the steering wheels do all of the technical work. using youtube / gt4 and gamefaqs -licence test guide ( at the bottom ) as my time references i can soundly beat a lot of them with a dual-shock and some i can't even get close to because of the steering wheel. example -
licences s 10 grand canyon , 2:36:488 , with about a second for improvement

Manual. I drove with auto on about a month ago but I switched to manual once and now I can't believe I sometime drover on auto.

I've been using auto since GT1, and after reading this thread, and just finishing Le Mans over the weekend, i tried manual transmission for the first time yesterday.

I started with the Lotus Elise at the Nurburgring, did 3 laps. It was ok. Just like many posted here, it's better to control the car, especially through the flowing corners, which the 'Ring's second half of the lap is famous for.

Next, i trialled again, this time 2 laps with the Nissan R92 race car. Perhaps, the only mistakes i'm making is out-braking myself and missing the apexes on some of the corners, and also downshifting too fast, or too soon, before the corner.

Just a while more, and i think i'll be a manual driver real soon. I'm targeting the Nurburgring 24 hour race to perfect my techniques.

I recently started using manual too.
It's different. I hope i get the hang of it soon.

I've heard others say this as well, but I havn't noticed that much of a difference from man to auto in GT5P.

In GT5P the wheels spin if you don't lift off when shifting up (only in pro physics). This causes problems in auto as you don't know exactly when it will shift. But with manual you can time it. This is what caused a lot of problems for me. Switching to manual made professional usable. But in GT4 it didn't actually make much difference, except in cars like the TVR speed 12 where you should never go below 3rd under any circumstances... that car has enough torque to accelerate out of corners in 5th gear without struggle :D

If you are a wheel user, the toe and heel technique can be used to improve your stability and speed through the corners. With auto gears you cannot really do this...

On a lot of corners the auto gears will shift down one too many, and on pro physics this causes problems on the exit due to wheelspin, so you would have to regulate the throttle. But even so, you lose time if you go down too many gears on a corner. The main problem here is, i found myself braking earlier to counter the oversteer and it made it worse, much worse. This can be rectified by holding the shift button in auto mode, but i find it much easier to just use manual...

I have just made the switch today, and getting the hang of it ( very slowly ), but ive noticed i keep forgetting to actually turn the car at the right time because im too busy worrying about downshifting to go round the corner, therefore completely missing the apex lol

 That happens. After a while you get used to it and shift without even having to think so you focus on driving instead. The first few days of using manual i had to practice each track again to find the right gears for each corner. With practice, you don't have to, you learn by the sound of the engine and the revmeter when to shift down.

It was a few months ago: I was bored and switched to manual transmission just for fun. At the beginning, I had problems with shifting down at the right moment, but after some ~ 30 laps on Nürburgring with different cars, I got the hang of it and til then, I'm only using manual transmission. It's so much better: You control you car 100%, which isn't the case with automatic transmission. I always thought with automatic transmission I'd be as fast as with manual, but I was wrong. My laptimes dropped drastically. Although I redlined the car (by pressing the R2 button) when I used back automatic transmission, I wasn't as fast as I am now with manual transmission. I always thought I'd push the cars to their limits, but I was wrong. You can only push your cars to their limits with manual transmission. So, everyone who is using automatic transmission, try out manual. I know it takes some time to get the hang of it, but it's definately worth switching to manual transmission from automatic transmission. Trust me. 👍

I accidentally (or not ;)) set cars that my friends were driving on manual in arcade mode.
It was verry funny.

I have to shift?
Yes!
Where?
R2!
What's R2?

The funny part was that just the day before one of these friends said they can beat me at any settings or tunes in the game... Haha he sure proved a point there.
Although i guess it was kind of unfair, that i didn't tell them.

I've told this story before and I'll tell it again now. Before trying Gran Turismo 1, I decided to "warm up" with a lesser game for a couple months, so I bought Ford Racing for the PS1, while GT1 sat on a shelf. Anyways, Ford Racing is kinda like GT1 and GT2...you can choose either "AT" or "MT" before each race...you don't need to go into Options.

Anyways, so very early on (like in my 2nd or 3rd virtual race ever, in a Ford Ka) I accidentally hit MT before starting the race. :dunce: I thought "what the hell...why not". So I'm glad I made this mistake so early. :) The fact that I was driving a super-slow Ford Ka helped me learn shifting much more easily than if I had started with a Mustang or whatever.

Gotta go with a stick shift. The car I drive every day is a four speed, don't see the need to go to anything different just because it's a video game.
