Auto or manual?

Well for me, a non driver in real life (shock horror :embarrassed:) I use Auto, not good enough to use Manual I admit and have no real desire or need for that matter. Have gained over 97,000 A-Spec points so far using Auto and still have 15% of the game left.

The only thing I can't get the hang of is when you need to downshift while braking, it's just a bit confusing to me.

I'll see if it's easier when can finally unpack my Driving Force GT on wednesday (My birthday).

it's gonna be a fun feat to conquer once you do get the concepct down you'll love it! it's nothing like the 'fancy footwork' that comes with downshifting and braking in real time driving, but i always feel like an F1 driver when i am reaching to shift down and brake at the same time with the DualShock 2. now it did take some getting used to, now when i do it around friends they don't know whether to watch the screen or my hands on the controller. evidently it's something to see when i'm playing GT, with how quick and rapidly i tap and press buttons. idk it just feels like i'm playing a game but they get a HUGE laugh and riot out of it every time. it was fun for me to learn and then 'master' i guess you can say, so when you get the hang of it let me know.

i fully focus on steering and surrounding cars, stop signs and lights, pesky cops, and grandpa and ma taking a year and a day to get from one side of the street to another all while driving a MANUAL. not that hard to to. saying an auto so you can focus on steering sounds like multitasking in a manual would be a challenge to you, less where talking about in GT4 but even then its dummyfied to drive a manual and steer with an analog atick or d-pad whichever the users use.

I know, but ive done auto since day one.. and it works fine for me. Have all gold licenses aswell... i don't see why i should switch to manual because it's only more work for me and takes the fun away, but hey that's me! to each his own :)👍

I just did the tokyo 300km endurance in the Judd Race Car with the wheel and I did it all with manual. I got a best lap of 1.24.7xx (i don't know if thats good but it seems right for me). It' s really fun and after the endurance auto seems a lot more boring for me. I wonder what rallying will be like.

But that will have to wait, I just started the Sarthe II 24 hour....

I ALWAYS use MANUAL!!! since I drive a 5 speed chevy truck in real life, its pretty easy I guess...plus auto trannys are no fun! i just wished that GT4 had a CLUTCH!!! and NEUTRAL!!! Its also easy to get out of a spin or oversteer if you drive manual, I usually just shift to a higher gear until it stablizes the car then go back to the lower gear and ACCELERATE!

I recently found out that when driving GT4, you can tap the E-Brake and it will stay in a neutral gear until you give it gas. You can shift to any gear in neutral, and its good for braking for a turn since you wont lock up by downshifting gears. I wish I knew how to do this a long time ago! it could have saved me hundreds of times! I rarely used the E-brake before...

yea i'm really shocked when i hear people say they don't use a manual on GT or racing games. it cant fathom the thought of not using a manual whether GT or whatever racing title. now in real life i have a manual Integra if i end up driving someones elses car thats when i'll drive a dog-o-matic but my cars are always manual. but before i get barked at by an egotistical overzealous pom pass 🤬 of a user i'll say to each his own.

After reading most of this thread, I thought that most of the people on this forum would be using manual trannys...since we all play tons of gran turismo

haha I hate driving Auto trannys in real life. its no fun. plus its WAY EASIER to burn out or drift in a stick. just let out the clutch at a high rpm really fast and you are on your way to fun! haha

yea i was playing around at 7500 RPM with my Teggy today up and down the street. i have a nice 4 Puck clutch too, you can't get that with an auto. plus i never know where to put my left foot in an automatic LoL.

I'm not old enough to drive a car yet, but I do have a steering wheel. Problem is, it's an old Microsoft Sidewinder that has FFB. And an interesting note when I was using it earlier with Live for Speed, whenever I shifted, I always reach for the clutch. And I haven't even used a steering wheel with a clutch, let alone a car.

I think Auto is slightly better for the drag racing, but Manual for everthing else. I drive a Manual in real life, so it makes sense. I just can't do a circuit race using Auto. It's so boring.

definitely manual...makes you get more involved in the actual driving not just pressing buttons...although manual on a normal controller is a pain in the ***

True. The best experience is always with a steering wheel. It's just a shame GT4 doesn't have a clutch.

I don't have the money to invest in a wheel, and thats the main reason I'm still using auto. My fingers are too busy with the gas/brake/ steering/NOS/rearview etc without also worrying about the gears when the game can do them for me.
Take the gas and brake away to a set of pedals and I'd be looking for something else to keep my hands busy, like a gearstick.

In real life I own and mostly drive manual unless I need to borrow my brothers Volvo estate.

Started using manual in GT2 and have been using it since. I've found for me I'm more consistent in lap times and faster overall. Yes I use a DSC-2 also.
