Auto or manual?

i made the switch from auto to manual this weekend......

really awkward at first using the lower shoulder buttons......couple of times i've hit L1 instead of L2 lmao.....

but i must say it does feel a lot quicker [probably isn't, just feels it] and the 'game' is more involving now, instead of just stearing......

well i recently started redoing my licences aiming for all silver [at least]

first attempt at a couple came up with gold.....so it must be quicker :sly:

Manual is def the best in this game, especially in Le Mans cars and the F1 car, especially when you want to drive your car a certain style or change the gear ratios. By the way, neone know why they have the ratios backwards?

I don't think anyone should be forced to drive manual at all, that would seriousely alienate a lot of the more casual players.

I agree with you there, but there should be some sort of in game encouragement that will make these casual gamers want to try and master manual transmission, at present there is nothing at all.

On the subject of discouraging casual gamers (and slightly off topic), I think that other areas of the game apart from manual transmission can also put-off casual gamers. For instance, I wouldn't class myself as a casual gamer, but I have trouble racing fast cars like the LMP's and F1's, though I am forced to do so to finish the game. Don't you think that that part of the game would discourage casual gamers? I know it puts me off! :sly:

I drove auto for the first 2 GT's (as i was just to young to bother with manual) and then used auto through about half of GT3 before switiching for certain races. Also started GT4 with auto but now manual is the way to go. Except for in rally's which i dislike anyway so i just stick it to auto and try to get through them as quickly as possible

Personally I only use Man-idle when i'm using a car with a weird powerband and i need to short shift or shift late, to sqweeze out some extra ponys

Endurance races = Auto for consistency, no Brainer

Time Attacks = Auto while pratice, Man-Idle when doing a timed run

Rally = Man-Idle normally, Auto when looking to goof around

And I just wanna ask whats with all the dick measuring when it comes to manual? your hitting a damn button, and auto just makes the computer push the same damn button (input) at the same RPM (not always the best Rpm with certain cars)

Like who cares, personally i don't pay any attention to my RPM/gears and just focus on my line 100%, then after that i figure my gearing, and start over, flip-flopping.....:dopey:

but seriously if you drive an auto in real life......gay....with no rainbow

Wow. What a sissy thread..

How are you gonna call yourself a pro game driver, in the tests they should've FORCED you to learn the gear ratios of every car.

Automatic ?? That's just pathetic, same with EVERY BENZ that none of them give you a clutch and gearbox. They're too luxury, too much comfort to be considered a "sports" car.

I'm so sick of people tryna race when all they have to do is full throttle..a true master utilizes a clutch and proper gearbox.

Look at the R35, the last and HOPE TO BE the LAST Skyline. That hefty price tag for nothing. Car does so much FOR you I don't know why it would be so fun. Forget you Skyline, you've DIED. Z GENERATION FOR LIFE !!

Sorry, HAD to mention. In GT5, those of you who can master that Aston Martin, while looking at the gauges in interior view, I salute you. The RPM stick revs UP BACKWARDS !! BEWARE !! Test it out and see for yourself !!

Hilarious, really. You criticize the GT-R for its "automatic", & then praise the Z. I hope you realize that Sync-Rev. whatever deal in the 370Z has already been credited to as a device where even the newest manual drivers will more than likely get near perfect shifts.

The new 370Z has assists ?? Bah..I'll get a Z32 then ;]

That Aston Martin in GT5 is a challenge eh ?? That RPM gauge is sick !!

@linuxrules: Firstly, I can say from my own experience that Linux does NOT rule.

@everyone: Is Auto transmission bad? I used it when I started playing GT4, but when I got used to manual, I never used it anymore. However I got 1 Gold License with Auto (I think it was on License A-6, Don't remember).

That's not a Skyline. That's a GT-R. There is a difference, and there is a reason there is no Skyline badge on the R35.

Why is this a no-brainer?

Time Attacks = Auto while pratice, Man-Idle when doing a timed run

Wow, are you serious?

You just hit the nail on the head with your very own explanation. Automatic trannies don't always hit the best RPMs for peak power. With a manual, you have more control, you can leave the car in gear longer as you near corners, or you can choose to shift to grab some extra torque down-low (with V8s and such).

There are also times when autos shift too early while you're in a corner or whatever. Now you're stuck revving the wrong gear, unable to get the best possible power-launch. :ouch:

I can sit here all day and think of reasons why manuals are better than autos.

Like who cares, personally i don't pay any attention to my RPM/gears and just focus on my line 100%, then after that i figure my gearing, and start over, flip-flopping.....:dopey:

Then you're not getting the best possible lap times.

👎 This makes no sense. You're basically saying in real-life, it's "gay" to drive an auto, but in the game, there's no advantage?:confused: And then up above, you're saying "all it takes for manual shifting is to press a button". How many more contradictions can you make, dude?>

Seriously, ban him.

It IS MANUAL cuz you can't just floor the throttle/brake. There IS such thing as paddle shift dude, you don't know crap about transmissions.

Yeh, have fun while you can't red-line that garbage ride you call a "automatic bomb". That's freaking sorry.

Also, is that what LSD (Limited Slip Differential) is for ?? To adjust the redline so you can shift better and more accurate when you're taking it too far and losing speed ?? Thanks.

Thanks Parnelli, I was about 200 words into that rant before I pressed F5.

Also, the idea of using AT for enduros...
For a long race you need to know the gear to use for EVERY TURN, and you need to hit the best line/speeed ALMOST EVERY TIME.

If you use the AI to determine which gear you enter a corner in ... for 3, 4, 8, or 24 hours of a race, you'll be in effing trouble.

For example, Grand Valley Speedway, example Viper blah blah version:
1: Accelerate through start section
2: Coast into first turn, try to get it at >150km
3: Watch out for dogleg, perhaps drop a gear depending on box setup
4: Line up, then drop to 2nd for hairpin. Guide it through then shift to third just after apex.
5: Mash the pedal, keeping it in 4th around the next 3 corners, and into the straight(ish).
6: Drop from 4th-2nd for the turn
7: Fang it out of there and use 3rd for the next 3 or 4 corners.

Using gears tells you what to do on a circuit. If you use AT you are being told what to do around a circuit.

You act like all automatics work the same way. Maybe in GT5:P for now, but if they have the right cars & they're modeled correctly for the full game, some of the autos should be much faster.

Many of you here can act like the old 5/6-speed stick can produce the fastest lap times ever, but we are in the age where manufacturers have developed autos/clutch-less manuals that have shown to be more reliable, stronger, & sometimes even much faster than their traditional stick shifts. Many here forget.

Although I didn't read all the posts I assume this is like all the other manual vs auto posts. "Only girly-men use auto" "Manual is the ONLY way" etc. Well I've used both in GT3 and GT4 and I am back to Auto because I can concentrate more on the driving. I absolutely couldn't imaging running the Ring for 24 hours using manual :nervous: I'd be a basket case... :yuck: The game is supposed to be fun, that's why is called "game" not "work". If you get fun out of doing 1000s and 1000s of gear changes good for you. Not my cup of tea. Hope that doesn't make me a bad guy... :guilty: one time).

I used to use auto but then I switched over to manual when I got GT4. I agree; saying that one is better than the other is kind of immature if you ask me. It depends on the person; some people just like auto better.

I thought as you thought at first, that all the shifting got in the way, but after a while you get used to it and it becomes second nature.

Using auto does not make you a bad guy, it just makes you a guy who uses an auto. There's nothing wrong with that.

Manual. Manual, manual, manual.

I just can't stand auto. I hate things being done for me... I like to have full control over all of the car. So manual transmission, with no drivers' aids.

It's how I roll 👍

It's not immature. Maturity has nothing to do with this debate. The lowest lap time does. If you're gonna compare automatic to manual for creating the best lap times within GT4, or any Gran Turismo, Enthusia, or any other serious racing game, manual driving wins.

Now, I"m not saying there is no advantage to using an auto. If you've got some sort of injury or handicap to your fingers, perhaps auto might be best for you. Or if you just want to be a lazier driver, there you go. Or if you wanna pretend to be a driver who's as realisitic as can be.

The Taurus SHO (in GT4) is in its 3rd generation, which is an automatic-only generation. So personally, whenever I race SHOs in the game, I switch to auto to simulate this.

But if you wanna compare pure lap times...using the same car with same parts & power output, manual wins over automatic every time, assuming the driver knows when to shift and stuff.

I thought as you thought at first, that all the shifting got in the way, but after a while you get used to it and it becomes second nature.

Using an auto does not make one "gay" either. 👎 I've driven automatics in the game and in real-life. I have nothing against them. But when it comes to control (and all the things I've already said before), manual wins.

I was not talking about real-life paddle-shifters. It's been well proven that clutchless manuals are faster than a stick with a clutch. I was trying to explain to what's-his-face up there the advantages a manual driver has in any proper driving game. He's so busy contradicting himself, though. I really wanna hear his explanation.:embarrassed:

seriously, guys..

I've tried to do manual with a controller and just can't do it. I don't think I'm a lazy driver(who knows maybe I am?), or a "lesser" driver. My fingers just can't press that many buttons at once.

If I am using a wheel though I use manual.

I felt the same way when I first tried manual, but really, when you give it enough time, you do adapt regardless of how hopeless it feels initially. It might help that I use the sticks rather than the buttons, but it should be basically the same either way. Manual is certainly faster, like every single person in this thread has already stated, but at the same time, it's most definitely not necessary to do well in GT4. Even with the automatic handicap, you can do all missions and gold all licenses without cheating, and generally get reasonable times - I have a couple WRS D1 silver times set with automatic to demonstrate that.

And you can also get maximum points too with an Auto. :)

I only use auto. Even used it for the Skyline drafting mission and passed it.

Only really used manual for drag racing. I dont use it for circuit racing.

Manual no doubt. Auto drivers are not used to driving.

Hey, hold it.
Why the freak that people who use Auto not know how to drive?!?
Are you an idiot? (not that I'm trying to be mean or anything...)

Anyways...

I have a mixed opinion...
I recently started using manual, but I just got a wheel a month or 2 ago, so I'm
using Auto tranny until I get used to the wheel:indiff::boggled:

Used to use Auto, but after switching to Manual, I'll never go back. Makes the licenses much easier, and the game far more rewarding.

Drove automatic for the first few years of GT4, believe or not. Saw the light, and have sinced changed to manual, which is so much more realistic, not to mention quicker as you change for different powerbands on certain cars. All together, the manual transmission is much more rewarding. 👍
