Auto or manual?

I haven't posted here in this thread before have I?

When I was younger I used auto all the time. Now in my more recent years I'm using manual on a DS2. Even when I use an automatic, I still press L2 or
R2 when it's time to change the gears.

I have to use auto when on split screen because i cant hear the sound off my car and then havin difficulties with gearin at the right point (cant be arsed lookin down at the rev meter) But when drivin o single its definetly Manual!!

Manual cause you can get more out of the cars that way. The engine brake, better traction and better acceleration. If your in auto and want to stop the car from redlining you have to hold R2

When I like to screw around and not race against the CPU, I use Auto. Against the cpu = manual.

I used to use auto because I couldn't pay attention to shifting while driving, but after redoing all the lisences up to IA, I managed to learn. Now if I forget to put it in manual, I attempt to drive, but hit the paddles and try to shift even when I know I can't.

Same here, I started catching on to manual after a while. I used to play arcade mode to get acquainted with MT. Now I use it a lot, mostly with DFP. I'll use Auto on DS2 if my brother wants to have a 2 player race.

Probably manual. There are some tracks and cars in which it is better to go manual or automatic. Like in Nurb, many people would probably go in automatic but in Test Course you can go better in manual.

I use manual becuase I don't want to wast 3-4 seconds leaving the computer to change gears at often the wrong time, or deliberately having to slow down more than I need to to force the game to shift down a gear to maximise exit speed. My lap times have gone up incredibly since I started using manual with the pad, I don't always get my DFP out you see, not for a quick 10 mins.

About a week ago I started trying to get myself used to MT. It felt so awkward at first; I was so conscious of when to up/downshift (more-so with downshifting while braking), but then I just started doing practice mode and some races with MT. I'm pretty used to it now, and it's even helped me get closer to beating DM34 :) - the main reason I tried learning.

Wow, the emphasis is certainly that manual is the most popular.
I myself use manual. I started with Auto (Even got 80 licence golds!) but switched to manual. Much better now!

I drive manual, and after switching the benefits become obvious. Most importantly, you don't end up using a lower gear for about half a seccond out of some corners, meaning in net terms that you lose time.

the bottom line is you can, with a bit of practice, devote enough of your brain power to control the transmission and make better choices than an auto 'box.

I like to use manual but I have used auto in the past and comparing the two manual is faster. I've started to use heal and toe in GT4 by giving it a little gas on downshifts..........I haven't really compared lap times to see if this technique works but I do like hearing the revs jump between gears.

manual. you cant drive anyware as near as fast or smooth if your in auto. and also it makes the experience feel more real.

After reading one of these threads months ago I switched to manual and haven't looked back. I have yet to see the benefets but I just deive manual anyways, except in the endurance hall.

I think manual is better in many ways. I've noticed while racing in GT3 and GT4 that when in automatic, the car will shift to a gear during a corner, that you dont want it to be at. Such as the 1st corner at Deep Forest Raceway. Normally the car in Auto, will go to 1st gear and then move up to 3rd by the time you exit the corner. When I use Manual, I downshift to 2nd...and stay in 2nd gear until I reach the middle of the apex and then upshift to 3rd. This may not be accurate, but this is what I've seen in the past, or atleast I remember seeing. Anywho, I think manual offers greater freedome in choosing the speed through a corner, if you want to fly in with a slower exit speed...then manual works fine. If you want to enter a corner slow to have a greater exit speed, then manual works fine also. Well those were my 2 cents.

:D same here...sounds nicer.

I've been using manual gears since the orginal Gran Turismo game came out, and I wouldn't play the game any other way. I'm not brilliant with gears, but I like to know that I am in ultimate control, and not the CPU. 👍

The thing that puzzles me though, is the fact that PD have a myriad of lessons that teach you how to control the car, but there is not one that teaches you how to use the gears. Infact, I've never noticed anything of substance in any game or accompanying manual that mentions or promotes the use of manual gears. I wonder why that is?

I also think its time for PD to force everyone to drive manual at some point in in the next incarnation of Gran Turismo. It doesn't have to be right at the start of the game, but somewhere in the end game, manual-only competitions should be present. At the very least, they should accurately model the differences between manual and automatic transmissions.

I don't think anyone should be forced to drive manual at all, that would seriousely alienate a lot of the more casual players. Remember automatic in the game doesn't mean the car is simulating that it is fitted with an automatic gearbox, it just means the computer is changing gear for you. However, on cars that are auto in real life, a more accurately done auto simulation would be better.

That is true. The way GT4 has most of the automatic tranny's configured, (particularly the Mazda Protege, Buick GNX and Mercedes SL500 and SL55) is that they drive like CVT's and not actual automatics. Just because the cars computer selects gears for you does not necesarily mean the car will shift like it has twin-clutch plated or a preselector box.
