Auto or manual?

It's not immature. Maturity has nothing to do with this debate. The lowest lap time does. If you're gonna compare automatic to manual for creating the best lap times within GT4, or any Gran Turismo, Enthusia, or any other serious racing game, manual driving wins.

No, I completely agree with you about lap times. When I say immature, I am referring to those who are saying things like "If you use auto you're gay" and "If you don't use manual you shouldn't be playing Gran Turismo". Those are exaggerations, but you get the idea. Saying that manual gives quicker lap times is completely true. That's why I use it.

Using an auto does not make one "gay" either. 👎 I've driven automatics in the game and in real-life. I have nothing against them. But when it comes to control (and all the things I've already said before), manual wins.

This is my point. I'm not disagreeing with you.

I see. There's nothing wrong with being gay. In fact, I'm as gay as can be today...

...gay as in happy :ouch:

Drove automatic for the first few years of GT4, believe or not. Saw the light, and have sinced changed to manual, which is so much more realistic, not to mention quicker as you change for different powerbands on certain cars. All together, the manual transmission is much more rewarding. 👍

Almost exactly what he said 👍

For me, it depends on the car im using.

if im using something with a lot of torque and power, i use manual. if i use something slow and under powered, i use auto.

Also, manual best suits cars like the speed 12. i use max hp, r tires, and set it to the sixth gear.

I used to use Auto but after switching I would never go back. I just used to hate the way Auto would change gears halfway through corner, always at the worst time too.

Manual, i only drive manuals and one any game system i go with manual. last time i played Gran Turismo on auto gearbox was GT1 when i was going on High Speed Ring for the first time. With a manual you control the shifts, there are so many benefits with going manual i cant list them all buy manual all they way, happy tuning.

Manual transmission

I've used it since I started 1/4 mile tuning about 2-3 years back.
At the start when I switched from Auto -> Manual ,
I experienced alot of max revving the gears before I realised that I was meant to shift up.

Manual. I used auto for a long, long time. Until one day I though "this is getting embarrasing, I must learn manual". I guess I was lazy. In Gran Turismo it's generally no big deal using manual but when playing Formula One (which I did - F106 and then F1CE) there are seven gears and quick downshifting from 7th to 2nd gear and such and I felt that was really tricky to learn. At first I had no clue what gear I was in but then I learnt to count clicks because there really is no time to check the current gear and not losing focus.

Eventually I leared it and now I don't understand why I stuck to auto for so long. It is not boring to drive auto, after all I had fun for a long time using auto, but after learning manual I realised how much more fun it could be.

So that's the trick for getting the gold licenses? I'll switch to manual if it'll get me the Model T. I've got everything else. I've tried manual a few times but kept switching back.

I used to play auto when gt1 first came out. I made the switch in GT2 when the license test began pissing me off (since I was able to take a turn better in a specific gear but the game kept changing it on me).

While driving with auto, hold down the R2 button to keep it from switching gears. Also allows for shifting past the redline.

the auto gear box in GT games lack any real meaning though a few cars transmissions changes are smoother and lacks 'gear lag' like a manual version would. its manual all day.

Auto is for minivans and pansy SUVs.

point taken and noted. well said 👍!!!

While I would readily agree that the GT4 manual transmission is better than the automatic from the point of view of sheer performance, I would also say that there is "more to the story".

In my case, I have used the auto tranny to earn over 111,000 A-spec points, and can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times it was necessary for me to use the manual to gain the performance necessary to prevail.

The real reason I use the auto shift has to do with my shifter race kart. The paddle shifter on my kart is necessarily arranged to shift down with the right paddle, up with the left. This is opposite the pattern with my G25. So I am afraid I would learn incorrect "muscle memory" by extensive use of the manual shift feature of my G25, and cause an over rev or bogging condition under actual racing conditions with my kart.

Since I race GT4 for entertainment and to maintain eye-hand coordination, I find it better for me to settle for the automatic mode.

yea i can see your point with not wanting to get the memory twisted up. i just can't physically drive an AT in a racing game it annoys me just like automatic transmissions in real life driving. manuals work better for me with games and has always been my preferred tranny of choice in my daily drivers.

You have a good reason to use auto transmission.

The only thing I can't get the hang of is when you need to downshift while braking, it's just a bit confusing to me.

I'll see if it's easier when can finally unpack my Driving Force GT on wednesday (My birthday).
