Can the PS3 stay on for so long? My Xbox would die every 6 hours...

Keeping a PS3 constantly turned on for 356 days is safer than turning it on and off 3 times a week for just two weeks.

The reason being is that the heat issues concerns the solder not melting, but softening and hardening between the on and off state. This meant that when the solder expanded (warmed up after being switched on) it had to contract naturally (after being switched off) and this led to cracks in the solder because it was lead free, a requirement of the EU but as the EU is by far Sony's largest market it made financial sense to roll it out worldwide through massive bulk buying at the suppliers.

By keeping a PS3 on non-stop for an entire year, you are keeping the internal temperature near constant even with differening seasons and thus different air temperatures because the change is very slow. And thus, the solder will neither expand nor contract to such a scale as turning the machine on and off.

It is one of those strange but true scenario's

You are a genius (or are on Wikipedia). Anyways, can I use borrowed cars in B-Spec?

No idea sorry, but I cannot see why you shouldn't be able to use them. I can put a selection of Le Mans prototypes on my share list later tonight (GMT) and you can use one of those if it is possible.

Just add me as a friend on PSN when you get a chance. Additionally, I will put the F1GT up there incase you don't wanna risk messing up the pitstops and just go for the win.

I think it is not a good idea to use the Formula Gran Turismo because it has no headlights.

I will do the 24h races after I get a wheel.
For 24h LM I'll probably use tuned McLaren F1...
...and as for 24h Nurburgring it must be won with a special car...
Here are some of the cars I consider:
- Pagani Zonda R [my first ever car on Gran Turismo 5]
- Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 RM [my first ever car on my GT5 PSN]
- McLaren F1 [my favourite car]

I think I'll do it in Zonda R but I'll see, I'll do the testing after I get my wheel (Fanatec 911 GT3 RS with ClubSport pedals =p).

I've been wondering which car I should use for this since the announcement was made for mid-race game saves. Been trying different cars and different settings both during the daytime and nighttime and i'm going for the R10. I just like the cockpit in that thing and the headlights are pretty good as well. Having said that I might hold on for a week or two to see what new cars the DLC brings but at present I'm going for the Audi. I reduced my choice to premiums initially due to me wanting to sit in the car and used the superb link below (courtesy of Adrenaline) to try out different settings on various cars

I've done some testing, and I'm going to go with the ZR1 RM. It's essencially a GT2 car racing against the LMPs. So, A- you're down on class, B-up on weight, and C-you're able to control it better. That car is very nimble for its weight, I'm fine tuning the suspension. You also can turn up the wick, and slack off, and it's still fast. I can't really do that with the higher classes.

The PP of the competition: around 710... I've used the Real Circuit Tours race on the same course to test. If I can run down the leaders at 100%, I can run the 24hrs at 85-95% with no issues.

I'm tossing up between Zonda R (if its possible), 787B, Mclaren F1 or R390, they are my favourite cars :) i'm still only level 33 a spec though

this thread has given me soe ideas.

I didn't even thing about using de ZR1 (RM) of the CLK DTM race car for the 24h on the ring.
But when you think about it, they shoul be more nimble in de twisty sections of the track to make up for th elack of speed on de straight.

Or am I way of here and should I just take out de 908 or speed 8?

Honestly, I think it will depend on how the mid-race saves work(limited/unlimited, etc). If you need to go hours between saves... I'd use a comfortable car. If you're going to be able to save at any pit stop or at any time, you could use the 908 or Bentley and haul butt all the time since you might be stopping more frequently. I'm sure we'll find out Tuesday!

Regardless of the save feature, if you're looking for a fun competitive time, use the lower class cars. You will have a similar pace as the LMPs when you're not running 100%, so if you need to open it up, you can. Plus, I look at it this way; when we practice, it's daytime and dry. What about the night and/or wet? I don't think 15 miles of hell with either of those LMPs would be fun in the dark and rain. It may be much more manageable with a DTM or GT car.

The audi R10 would be my choice, very fun little car, and the open cockpit it very good if you drive in the rain.

This is what worries me too .... I want to use the R89C, i know it will cut the AI in half but i plan to race against myself, trying to improve my lap times in the 24H Nür.

But maybe it will be more fun if the race was competitive, so maybe i will decide to use the best touring car in the game, the Merc CLK.

What to do, what to do?

If you're comfortable with the CLK, great. The ZR1 RM is about 15 seconds a lap faster-in my tests- and it's just as stable. What hurts the CLK is the lack of top speed. It'll get up to 180MPH without an issue, but 190 is where it effectively runs out of steam. The ZR1 will cross 200MPH easy. Average approximate times: ZR1 7:30, CLK 7:45 (going off the top of my head; give or take 5 seconds on either side depending on traffic and pace). Since I've seen reports of the lead LMPs doing 7:50-7:55; the CLK might be too close, especially if you're running conservatively. That's why I was looking for a faster car, I was concerned. I'd rather do 7:45 in a car that can do 7:30, instead of pushing for 7:40 in a 7:40 car to be comfortable.

True, but i find the ZR1 harder to control than the CLK. I tested almost every LMP / Group C cars and i still think i will go for the R89C. It looks like it has decent headlights and it`s not too hard on mistakes.

That's fair. Enjoy. Hope you're going to wait until after tonight to start with the mid-race saves. There are a few that are tackling 24h races prior. I can't wait, but I will anyways! :dopey:

Its gonna be so nice to save during the endurance races, i just need the 2, 24 hours in A-spec left ;)

I've done the Le Mans 24hr race with 2 sleeps in the middle but didn't fancy doing it again in that way around The Ring (finding that much spare time can be a right pain). I'm also still struggling to bring myself to do the 9 hours round Tsukuba, I really don't like that track

You know, the 908 may not be the fastest outright prototype for one lap, but over an endurance distance, this car owns all. I've done a 50 lap enduro online 710PP, me in the 908, against R8, the Minolta, the C9, all good racers. I was banging off 3:18's metronomically, so yea by the 6th lap I was 19-20 seconds behind, but then they pitted and I just kept banging off laps. By lap 20 I had saved a whole pit stop, plus refueling time, and I had a 10 second gap to the lead. By the time they caught me again lap 25 we all had to pit again, but I didn't need fuel, again I gained like 6 seconds just from skipping refueling. This kept going, and by lap 40, I had about a 20'something second lead which I practically maintained until the end. I think those 3:15's had something to do with it.

What is your choice ?

Mine will be the X2010. Purists will ask where is the challenge in that.

The challenge would be having to race the same track for 24 hours in front of your TV and not getting bored out of your skull. I have driven in real life for 24 hours and that is no picnic either, but I was going to Sarasota, FL for spring break. For a GT5 trophy and car ticket it's not worth it.

If I am going to go against an AI driver that doesn't get tired and does not have to take urination/defecation breaks, I want it to be for a few hours at a time max because I am still going to hit the pause button and take breaks for meals.

I might even get a 7 hour lead in the X2010 and then pull over to the side in a nice scenic spot with 6 hours left and go to bed, then wake up and collect my winnings.
