BMW 2-Series & M2

I'm fully aware there are differences, but the BMW range really wouldn't have suffered without one of them.

Huh, didn't seem like it to me.

edit: Anyway, this look more like it to me..

I can't wait until they make an M2

Unveil next year, production M2 to hit the market in just under 12 months, probably just over 12 months on your side of the pond.

Good grief, that looks awful. I really hope whatever that is a 'mule' for doesn't share the same door to window ratio.

Don't worry, it's a mule. It's not even the F2x chassis underneath, simply a 2-er body, chopped and changed to fit. It might be the BMW Toyota joint venture platform underneath, but the production Z series are rumoured to take their cues from this:

and this...

... so it might look like an owl

Why does the 2 series have to be so overstyled? Why can't it look like this?

A tastelessly modified E30, adropped E36 (that doesn't look that bad, except for the de-chrome on the kidneys), and a badly modified E38 (Hamann of ALL people!). I mean, fair enough, the 2-er might not be every ones cup of tea, but surely there are better examples than that!

All of those cars I posted have, as far as I know, completely stock bodies. Just wheels and suspension work. The point was the emphasize the simple, masculine, and handsome lines of older BMWs. How is the E38 badly modified (it has aftermarket wheels and....nothing else) or the E30 tasteless?

Happy?

The 2er looks badly modified and tasteless from the factory.

Ok, those look much more interesting!

Edit: E30, E36 and E38 are still great looking cars. Classy, understated and timeless.

The E38 has a front lip spoiler, twin front fog-light conversion, aftermarket sculpted side skirts, rear window lip spoiler, and chromed alloys. The E30 is tasteless mostly because of the stretched tyres, oversized alloys, and the stance'd approach which no doubt butchered the handling of what looks like a 325i/325iS/320iS.. the colour also does not suit they minimal lines of the E30, and judging by the fitment of the front lower bumper, it's not OEM, which makes me think it's not even an iS at all - oh and it has eyebrows, which are the quintessential bad taste mod for anyone so desperate to mod their old BMW, they'll chuck the cheapest thing in the "Demon Tweeks" catalogue on to it.

Much better, thanks :D Make that a standard wheel base 735i, in Silver, and it's very much a car I would have bought myself.

I'm not saying you have to like the 2-er, I'm not its biggest fan myself... where older Bangle and Van Hooydonk BMW's would have had concave lines and creases, the latest round of BMW's seem to have replaced those with convex curves and rounded edges, which makes them look bulbous... but not badly modified or tasteless, at least not IMO.

You would buy a non long-wheelbase 7er?? And a 6 cylinder?!

760iL or nothin'

The 2er is just bulbous and fussy. 90's BMWs were lean and purposeful. It's all a subjective wash though, I suppose.

Yeah, that's ballin' an' everything, but there was no 760il in the E38 generation, you'd be looking for one of these ...

... also... BMW 6 cylinder engines suit my driving characteristics, I've had several, and I'm happy with them, and when you wring them out they make the best noises... V8's (740's) and V12's (750's) like those found in the E38 make no sense for me in the UK, given the roads I have to drive, the roads I want to drive, and the fuel prices I have to pay!

Ugh. I meant E38 750i-iL. Get that monstrosity off the page! V12 for me...I would only drive it occasionally anyways.

If BMW follow this design language in the nose then, fine.

It's reminiscent of early BMWs. The 1-series and 2-series have the upright look of past BMWs. The bigger BMWs have lost their way. I'd never buy a new BMW if I owned this 3.0 Bavaria

Given how much the coupes from the same era go for, an E3 / Bavaria represents great value for money, they do pretty much sum up the styling aspects I love most about old BMW's, and I've nearly pulled the trigger on purchasing one a couple of times this year.

The 2 is a good step. I do hope the cars lose weight. Something like an M2 Lightweight would be right.

Or this?

Or a smaller version of this?

Even the Bangle cars looked better than this new generation. COME ON BMW.

The boxy look that defined the young-timing BMWs will never return due to strict crash safety regulations. Person collision safety requirements cause all front ends of modern cars to look like they have been artificially pulled upwards. I'm not sure of the word for word statement of the regulations, but remember seeing a documentary on car styling about it. It said something along the lines that current design is strictly regulation based and time is needed for designers to make designs in these rules more beautiful in the future. Such cycles have appeared in the past as well, where design was first dominated by regulations and then gotten prettier in time.

You will never see a classic three box shape again due to aerodynamic needs.

You will never see classically slim pillars again due to crash regulations.

And you will never see low cowl lines again due to pedestrian safety regulations. Not until all cars run boxer engines, or airbagged hoods (expensive) or electric motors (even more so).

Just my opinion, by the 2 series is too 'chunky' and bloated to be a good looking car. The F20 1 series (and even more so the F21 3 door) are much taughter and well proportioned in my eyes.

I think the way they pronounce the bulge of the rear wheel arches makes the F2x 1-er's and 2-er's both look a little dumpy, however I agree it does work better on the hatch as overall it's a slightly 'stubbier' car, 2-er should be a bit sleeker.

Agreed. I don't mind the 2er, but for me the E82 1-series coupe is a nicer shape, and the F-model hatchbacks seem to work better too. I've come around to the E87 1er though - I think it's a more successful design than the latest model, though the flip side to that is that the F-models do make the E87 look quite old on the road now - BMW's detailing moves forward quite a bit with each model generation (particularly the DRLs) which makes older ones look quite dated quite quickly.
